Hi,
My seven year old son was diagnosed with Asperger's last Friday. I came across this site the other day and it's been really wonderful and I've learned so much so I just thought I'd say hello.
Reading information on the traits of Asperger's and how to approach them, and especially reading the experience of those with Asperger's, has been like a light going on in my head.
I feel like I've been trying to build a puzzle without realising half the pieces I had were wrong. Now I've just been handed a box with all the missing pieces.
Does anyone have any advice, links or titles of helpfull books they would like to share?

Hi, Whirling dervish - there's a whole subforum on parenting issues here, at the top is a sticky with recommended reading. Welcome, and good luck!

We have a parenting forum where you can get help.

to learn about the condition itself read the tony attwood book

books i find much more interesting are the books actually written by aspies

two things that seem to be the best advice:
in a comfortable way, get them to progress and being self sufficient
follow up with special interests

its great you guys found out at a young age that alone is going to help him very much

Hi and Welcome to Wrong Planet :)

I agree with everyone else, the parenting forum would be a good place to read about other parents and how they handle the situation. Also to ask questions and receive some advice :)

You may have given the box with the missing pieces, but you may find some people here that will show where to put those pieces in the puzzle :)

I have a hard time staying engaged with most books about AS or Autism but I really like just about anything that Temple Grandin has written. Her writings are very practical and her life story is exceptional!
