im new ( mum to an 11 yo boy with aspergers) who is struggling with irritation/depression/stress etc.
his psychiatrist has today prescribed Aripiprazole (half a 2.5mg tablet daily to try it) and im searching the web for info relating to this drug and its uses. she didnt chose rispiridol because my son is already overweight and doesnt need a boost in his appetite that some users of that drug report.

im also sudying a BSc (hons) degree in psychology, (yr 3 of 5) so am interested from a proffesional stand point as well.

i also have a 9yo non spectrum daughter, and a 6mth old baby son who is so far developing within perameters ( we dont like the word "normal" here ;) )

any experiences would be great, thanks. TJ

I've taken aripiprazole (Abilify), Risperdal, Seroquel, Geodon, Zyprexa.. I honestly cannot remember anymore what had what effect but NONE were good. I think Abilify may have caused extreme restlessness/suicidality in me.

The combination that I (a 24-year-old female adult, so not nec. of relevance to your son's situation) take now is fluvoxamine maleate (Luvox), and clonazepam as needed (whenever I start feeling anxious) for anxiety. The Luvox was too high and making me manic/suicidal so was decreased.

Not sure if this was helpful, again I'm not a kid like your son and everyone's different, but I have tried many many antidepressants, antipsychotics and anti-anxiety medicines at various doses and am very sensitive to side effects and Luvox + clonazepam are good for me for anxiety/depression/stress.

Hi
Aripiprazole (sp?) is an odd first choice for an AD especially in a child. I'd be concerned about putting your child on an antipsychotic without symptoms ofpsychosis. I tried it a few years back and it made me hypermanic. It was a horrible experience which stoppedwithin days of not taking it. I cannot stress howhorrific antipsychotics and their sideeffects are. I have permanent memory problems because of them.

I know some people claim anti-p's can help with some social elements of AS but I don't think medication is the answer for that. As for using it as an anti depressant, I'm not convinced. Anti-p's are horrible drugs that essentially zombify you and numb you to all emotion good or bad. I lived in a world of my own and felt I was watchingthe world from within a bubble and I couldn't participate.

Obviously I don't know how your son is feeling or the severity of his depression but I'd be so wary of medicating a child with such serious drugs. Ask for a second opinion, speak to your son and ask what HE wants.

I
