Hi there

Am desperate to talk to other mum's with girls on the spectrum. My daughter is quite "complex" and is hard to pin down, some say Aspergers and others say no as she has language difficulties so hfa/asd. She also has Adhd, high anxiety levels and self harms.
She is in a fantastic specialist school which really helps but still going through a really tough period. She started her periods last year at just 10 yrs old and is very developed for her age but is very young with her emotional stuff. Her IQ is really high but she doesn't really know how to use it.
At the moment she is completely in her own world and spends the whole time on youtube as she loves art and seems to be making friends on there. It baffles me how she can communicate so eloquently on youtube but can't do the same verbally with us. I guess it's just easier than doing it face to face.

I really want to help her interact again but when I suggest doing anything other than youtube she becomes physically and verbally aggressive.

She is such a lovely girl and we adore her but we just don't know how to help her interact more and do things other than the obsessions.

Looking forward to getting to know you all BS

, Better on youtube huh, I think you'll found we are a lot more eleqount in typing then verbally, In life I find it hard to verbalise my confusing thoughts, here is different: typing is so much easier for us, no facial expressions, no double meanings, no sarcasm, it's blunt. If autism had a language it would be wholly typed.

A lot of posters here will probably empatise with your girl, I remember being that age and how intense the world seemed, it still seems that way, only now I'm able to explain it all better, one thing to remember about even high IQ ASD's is that language is still an issue, I couldn't explain why I couldn't stand being in crowds at that age.

Welcome. I'm not a mother but about ten years ago my mum was in your position.

thank goodness youtube wasn't around when I was at school, I'd have never left the house!

We - that is me and other kids at school with as - went through such issues with computer games and chatrooms. I say remove the computer from her room, and only let her on it when she does her homework! One boy went from just scraping through to topping his class when his parents did this. My mother relied on rewards to make me study, even for a little while. On one frustrating weekend she paid me a dollar for evey five minutes I spent doing my math homework. And if I got over 75% on a maths test, I got a new cd.

Try getting to know some of the other mums at school and some older kids. They can share tips and tricks and might know some good books you can read

good luck

Welcome to WrongPlanet

Well, it's nice to hear she's at a good school at least (I wasn't). I probably can't advise you here, but you're likely to get more attention if you post in the Parents Forum if you haven't already.

Welkome to WrongPlanet. :)

My obsessions are what keep me the most grounded. Take my favourite things away and I will go crazy.
