Well I knew there was somthing unusual about me when I was 7 just had no idea what it might be, then at 21 the age I am now I started thinking there was something more then depression and anxiety going on. So I started looking up varoius mental disorders trying to see if maybe one of those explained it and then my sister asked if I thought I maybe had Aspergers so then I looked that up and it sounded like a possability. So I told my counseler what symptoms I had and he agreed with that and we compared the symptoms to the diagnosis critiera and they fit. So it was kind of a diagnosis but probably not a full diagnosis.

I was fifty-five by the time the diagnosis became official. Fifty-two when it first dawned on me.

Got dx'd, with MBD, at age ten. Never really believed it was me. And then at age 42, i heard about AS. Self dx'd, and got a official dx age 43.
Wished AS were accepted when i were a kid. But on the other side we are who we are!! !

I was wrongly diagnosed ADHD when I was on elementary school. I received an AS diagnosis when I was 12.

I wasn't diagnosed until 4 years ago, and I'm 43 now.....for 10 years previous to that my life was just so confusing and lonely. It's much better now.

@Age26

(Although I don`t exactly believe in psychiatry nor psychology the way it is practiced today [kind of have my doubts as to this syndrome having a genuine scientific basis due to its seemingly extremely open-ended criteria for qualifying of which anybody could experience at any given point during their life-times])

28 (actually, I was officially diagnosed last week.)

I have been in therapy for other things and my therapist told me I have it. I had wondered about it briefly before but never gave it much thought. When my therapist told me, I did not see it coming, but it made perfect sense to me.

Same as Ben, 4-5 (can't quote block with few posts apparently)

I think its hurt much of my life but has also helped with a solid portion; too early of a diagnosis anyway.

one of the reasons it is hard to stay on this site for many years is that the same questions come up over and over, and i answer the first thread, and i fail to repeat myself in successive threads asking the same question, and so my sentiments and story are lost in the sands of time.

"diagnosed"? with what?

i was suspected with unofficial authority to be autistic at the age of 3 months.

by 3 years, i was diagnosed as autistic, and i was considered to be reasonably severe because my level of connection to the world around me was very scant. people wanted to rescue me from my world by trying to show me affection, but i resisted that because i did not want it. i was in my own world because i wanted to be there and i did not "retreat" there.
i felt comfortable there. no one else was included.

my iq was considered to be below average because i paid no attention to anyone who asked me questions, so i was not able to be tested until later in life when i developed a taste for puzzles.

i spent most of my adolescent life in psychiatric institutions because i was not able to integrate with a normal schooling routine. there were major disruptions to the other kids behaviors when i was schooled normally , and there were major clashes with my "teachers", so i was always returning to institutions in the long run.

after some naughty behavior in 1995, i was advised to have my autism reviewed, and i was diagnosed with AS after 6 weeks of 2 consultations per week and extensive testing as well as anecdotal evidence provided by my family, and the advice of my original psychiatrist who told me i was AS long before it was in the DSM.

so i always knew that i was the world i live in, but i got the label "asperger syndrome" in 1994.

whatever.

you asked the question and i answered it.

At 27, within the past year, because I was misdiagnosed with social anxiety for so many years. I got a new psychologist, one who doesn't have his head up his ass, and he pinpointed the real problem and diagnosed me with AS.
