Getting diagnosed + Questions
Anyhow I have a few questions for you all. but first ill say a brief paragraph about myself. It started when I was younger around 6 or 7 when i got sent for tests that were for classic autism. this took a while and came back as a no. so everyone just thought my behaviour as lazy and shy until recently i took part on a princes trust course. The instructor noticed i didn't really take much part in the group and also my work experience employer layed me off early for being "rude" and standing around doing nothing. I don't recall what i did wrong and I'm just confused to this day :p The instructors called my social worker and asked them to get me tested for something I'v never heard about (aspergers syndrome). I tried to deny it but after a while decided to go to the doctor's to get a possible referral. my social worker also somehow got her hand onto my previous assessment and also school reports which confused me how seeing as most of my info was destroyed. so i got refered to a specialist and after a few visits i have been told i was clearly on the autism spectrum and for further help I should contact a place in Birmingham if need be.
questions-
-- Are many people late being diagnosed / never diagnosed at all?
-- Could my life (I haven't included it here) have caused it to become more worse as i got older?
-- Does it always feel weird first finding out?
-- what age were you when you were diagnosed / or are you still not "officially" diagnosed
-- i went through mainstream school, went to college and was once on a uni course (All IT). Did you go through mainstream ect?
Thanks in advance and i guess life goes on as normal except this extra support I'm supposed to be getting I'm curious to what really sets people on the spectrum apart (what people notice and what people don't) iv researched but I have never met a person with these symptoms. but the main thing i found is it affects different people in different ways.
Thanks for the help

I knew I was on the spectrum at around age 20. I wasn't diagnosed until age 27, and I was diagnosed with classic autism. Some people here weren't diagnosed until their 50s or later and yes, many people never get diagnosed. It happens. I was taken at the age of 3 to doctors, psychologists and speech therapists because I went from perfect sentences (though I was delayed to begin with) to completely non-verbal. They even put me on an "autism diet"--they didn't call it that, but it is the type of diet often recommended for autistic people now. They never made any mention of autism depiste my very clear autistic mannerisms. When I first realized I had it, it was a surprise, but it made sense to me. When I was diagnosed, it didn't feel weird because I was expecting it. Also, yes, I did go through mainstream school. I ended up dropping out in grade 12 though, and graduated a few years later from the community college with a high school diploma. I am also getting ready to graduate from university in May with a first class honours degree, so it is definitely possible for autistic and aspie people to go through university.

Thanks for replying. This was exactly what I was looking for. I guess I was just worried about what it meant for me which thinking now doesn't change allot Also my social worker mentioned it was the schools fault for not noticing but thinking about it, it wouldn't be very hard to miss a shy student. I guess I'll just learn to live with knowing it and it won't bother me as much in future

I am 19, haven't been diagnosed yet (dunno when I will be tested) but my mom plans to have me tested. I am perfectly okay with it sense I discovered that I might have aspergers a year before she thought of it and didn't tell her. If I didn't want to get tested it wouldn't happen
I think I want to do something with IT but dunno how that is going to work sense I suck at school even though I am smart.

-- from what I read, many people get MIS-diagnosed more than not at all
-- It's possible -- if you were upset a lot or treated poorly in school, it could very much aggravate the situation as it did for me
-- I only just broke out of my denial yesterday, and it was painful finding out the truth. It's worse if you've been denying having problems and having people make fun of you for it since you were knee-high, and it's been going on for years, only to have someone who hasn't truly known you for terribly long break the news to you.
-- I'm 20 and found out the day before I registered here, but have had off-and-on suspicions for the last 13 years. I don't have an official diagnosis, just the whole world saying "She has AS/Does she have AS/do you know if she has AS?"
-- Yes, I went through mainstream, and it was hell. I seriously wanted to drop out of school by the time I was 12, it had gotten so bad. High school would have been worse if I had noticed how horribly people were using me, teasing and taking advantage of my "stupidity", and how "oblivious" I was. If not for some amazing friends who knew the truth and didn't know if I knew, I probably would have completely dropped out :/ I barely scraped a graduation out as it was, even had councillors tell me I should take Special Ed if I really wanted to, and that only upset me.
Lol wanted to post that days ago, but my computer and internet were on the fritz xD

Your Aspie score: 158 of 200
Your neurotypical (non-autistic) score: 56 of 200
You are very likely an Aspie
I was away from my pc for a few days And thanks for giving me all your opinions it's really helped XD. School seemed to be normal. A few times I was picked on but everyone used to have a "gang" or group they used to hang around with at lunch and in classes and friendship was close so I got a lot of help According to my brother in law who was a few years higher everyone heard about what happened to me and my sisters family and generally left us alone. I guess my "weirdness" and shyness was always placed on what happened and nothing was done to see what the problem was.
