The Dino-Aspie Ex-Café (for Those 40+... or feeling creaky)
Hi from me on my trip. I'm borrowing a computer for a few minutes. I think I was nuts to tackle this task. I need a new place and this is where i want to be but dealing with the realtor is awful.
I found a place i like a lot and have started the process. No idea whether I will be able to though. That would put me back at nowhere. I have talked more in the last three days than the previous year.
It is very pretty here though and we saw wild turkeys, eagles, ospreys, beaver, and a moose. (!)

I hope you get it, mntn13! It sounds really nice! Keep us posted, OK?

i made an offer but with a different, nice realtor; and have to start for home tomorrow.
I spent three hours crying from the stress of the bad realtor all mixed up with being in this without understanding how the processes work, and feeling terrifically confused. But, tomorrow i'll have parts of the long drive where there is no traffic & I will listen to some soft music cds and I will be ok. thanks, hartzofspace.

You're welcome! But may I recommend that you look into the services of a broker (if it isn't too late?) My fiance and I were really pleased with the broker that we found. She did everything, and all we had to do was sign papers. Of course she got a commission, but that came out of the sale of the property and we didn't have to worry about it. Also, if you want ideas for financing, you can PM me.

A really freaky incident last night! We had just gone to bed, and I slowly became aware that there was this bizarre thumping and banging sound coming from outside the house. I got up to check it out. I looked out the windows but couldn't see anything. The banging got louder. I woke my fiance and we got dressed and ran outside with flashlights. Two possums were engaged in deadly battle. They had been fighting so hard that they were banging into the pipes beneath the house. We removed a covering over a crawl space under the house a few weeks ago and neglected to put it back. So these two possums had been fighting under there. They were in the backyard when we came outside, and one had blood dripping from its mouth. The other was badly wounded. They stared at us and then slowly started leaving. I had a hard time getting back to sleep after that.

The loser of that battle will probably be okay - possums are largely immune to the nasty stuff that grows on their fangs, and they heal incredibly rapidly.
I participate occasionally in a creepypasta fanfic site called >the SCP Foundation<, which is (fictionally) devoted to finding and securing things too dangerous or strange to be loose in the world (the mantra is "Secure, Contain, Protect"). Some SCP objects include SCP-173, a weird statue that can't move as long as it's under direct observation, but will break your neck if you blink or look away while in the same room; SCP-682, an unkillable reptilian thing from Somewhere Else that hates all life, and can adapt to anything used to attack it except hydrofluoric acid (it's contained in a hydrofluoric acid bath); and SCP-914, a clockwork machine of unbelievable complexity with no apparent power source, that can take any item that will fit into the input booth and destroy, "improve", or change it, depending on the setting (one experiment involved putting a can of Red Bull in, and selecting Very Fine; the output was given to a D-class experimental subject, and the result was described as a "gray blur" - the D-class was found asleep in an abandoned house fifty miles away from the site, some eight hours later).
I was going to write up an SCP object based on opossums. So I did some research on the properties of the real-world species. If they didn't actually exist, their real properties would qualify them for SCP status, assuming the write-up didn't get shot down for "crossing the Able line" (that is to say, being more superhuman than SCP-176-1, colloquially known as "Able").

I hope they don't either for your peace of mind's sake - you are going to, or already have closed off their access to the space under your house, yes?
I guess there always has to be some negatives along with the positives.

Well, if anyone's interested here's what's happening in the shortest way possible.
I am finished driving [yay] and feel like I covered half the earth but it was 'only' 2,300 miles round trip. This I will not do again unless my daughter comes along to help drive.
I'll probably find out today whether my offer was accepted. It included the owners carrying the loan. If I do this I'll have to hurry up and get out of here so I don't have too many double payments. Really scary; I'm trying not to think about it because I try and figure everything out at once I'll dissolve.
The first, bad realtor showed me some that were less $, but were wrecked and rotten inside. Some smelled so strongly I couldn't even go in. I think he could tell how naive I am and was purposely attempting to get me to spend my money on abandoned/impossible to sell properties. It was pretty awful. He keeps calling me & leaving messages because I haven't told him I'm not using him anymore. I haven't told him, because I can tell when I am going to get really nasty and I don't want to explode at someone who lives in the small town where I want to live. lol
The new realtor told me there are lots of places for sale and there must be some that people have taken care of, kept clean, etc. So if I have to start over again it will be with someone trustworthy.

Yes we have! So far no more possum boxing matches.

This is true. I just have to remember to remember the positives. I have a habit of only dwelling on the negatives so that I lose all proportion.

Thanks for the update! I tend to avoid people that I know I am going to blow up at, until I am sure I can control myself. Are you only looking at foreclosed properties? I can imagine why that realtor was only showing you such crap. Have you been pre approved? When my fiance and I first started looking at properties, we didn't know what we were doing. And we were shown crap. Then I did some online research and found that realtors don't take you seriously unless you show that you have gotten financing. Once we found our broker (for a USDA Rural loan with no money down) and got first pre qualified then pre approved, realtors took us seriously and started showing us nicer places. Plus, we had worked out how much house we could afford, and knew how high we could go in price. Would you be offended if I sent you some links?

hi hartzofspace
I'm the same way with negatives - I'll lie awake for hours at night obsessing about them, until I remind myself with some visual aid. Everything is visual for me:
Lately I see the worries and negatives as dementor-like things, then I turn them into carved dementors made from logs, then I pick up the little logs one by one and toss it on a fire in a pretty fireplace. Then, after a while, I can get back to sleep. Sometimes it's a nap from 3:30 until 4:30 a.m. when I get up anyway.
Not offended at all, I'd appreciate it. If you want to PM me, that'd be o.k. as this all might be annoying/boring/selfish in the thread. As usual, I am unsure of myself.

I'm not sure if Iain picked this up in kindergarten, or from one of his beloved Nick Jr. shows, but until recently he'd been referring to string cheese (one of his favorite snacks) as "cheese like a round."
Now it's "cheese like a cylinder."
I love my kids, I really do...

We are having so much fun! My fiance was finally able to get his storage things bought down from Maine, and we now have his mother's china cabinet, dining room set, and bookcases, as well as other things that he grew up with. Our house is really shaping up now, with the combination of his things and mine. I also got to meet my brother-in-law to be, who had to come to the states (from Scotland where he lives and teaches). He drove the moving van down to FL and stayed overnight. I am so tired now!
