Until just recently I realized that i had been putting on an act to fit in with my family friends and my church family. The act became so stressful that i became so ill with ibs and anxiety disorder that i had to drop out of school for the semester. But now i am trying to learn myself my family and friends and my family is trying to understand me
I have been going on and on but for the first time i can share my troubles with people who understand.

By the way, welcome Trissie (I can see that you are new here too, like Nymeria8 who started this thread).

And welcome Ip48 - in case you haven't been welcomed anywhere else (and even if you have, welcome anyway!).

I was flirting with another burnout, and was tired of being tired. So I got over the apprehension of meeting with another specialist who would throw at me labels that fit their experience. I still got the DSM thrown at me, but I was pointy this time, asking if it was possible that I had an autism spectrum disorder, if so why, if not why not, and if unsure what are the grey zones.

That's the short version. Oh, and I was tired of not growing positively, that is instead of living looking forward to good things, I was living in order to avoid a repeat of the past. In other words, I was tired of living in fear.

Thanks to everyone for the welcome!

Its been an interesting time since being diagnosed but in many ways I am finally feeling comfortable in my own skin. Its sort of like I am being allowed to take off the costume I have been wearing for my entire life. Now if I could only find the real me in here somewhere :?

The last time I remember having genuine fun was around 8 years old or so. I can barely remember what that feels like.

Its weird to finally belong to a group by actually being me and following my intincts instead of pretending. An adult diagnosis is really different. I wish I had known my whole life but I suppose many adult aspies feel this way. Time to start over now I suppose. Tabula rasa and all that.

Trying to stay positive, though I do have my bitter days too. Its nice to know there are others out there.

and I rambling so, anywho, thanks again.

Nymeria8!

First off, points for you for using Tabula Rasa! But welcome and I know exactly how you feel about being yourself here and not pretending you are amongst friends here

Welcome again!

Thanks for the honesty IP.
I was not as lucky as to avoid another burn out but this time i was SO tired of being tired that I just gave in. A long search for the cause for my ridiculous sense of smell eventually linked me to a description of AS. I might as well have thrown into a black hole. For what seemed like eons, but was only seconds, all oxygen was depleted, all sound stopped, and I realized I was reading about me. It was really freaky. That was about a month ago. Felt only fair to share my story in return.

Hi Trissie. Hi One...thanks for posting :)

And thanks to you, as well, Muse. Its about time my use of obscure terms had an outlet and was appreciated.

I'm happy to share this outlet with you, people should use more obscure and outdated terms more often, bring more diversity to the english language, despite living in a nation full of slang and idioms to the point we speak 'Australian' and not English, I still often enjoy using the more outdated slang to set me apart from my peers. =)

Welcome to the site. I just joined a little while ago myself.

I was diagnosed as a child (heck, I'm still a child by my own standards - 19 is pretty young), so I haven't had to experience a sudden change of perspective on life, and because of this, I haven't got the same experience as you do.

I agree with lp48 - live for new experiences, don't live to avoid old ones.

My only advice, which I'm still working on taking myself, is that you don't have to change yourself to fit in. Be comfortable with yourself and you won't have to tread lightly around others. I feel that strangeness or eccentricity adds to uniqueness, and others generally only react badly to lack of clarity and confidence.

A Song of Ice and Fire.

Much, much better known as Game of Thrones. But there are no direwolves in the tv adaptation, and if they ever mentioned the Warrior Queen I doubt anyone would remember her name, so I guess the only way to get the reference is to read the books~ I read all five of them in one month, between mid-december and mid-january, and loved every moment of it. So I'm glad someone who likes the books came along~

Muse, I make every attempt possible to insert obscure/outdate terms into everyday speak. Its like a game to me. I especially enjoy the perplexed look on peoples faces when they have no idea what I meant.

Az, thanks for the advice. Trying to like me for me is my latest challenge. My first step, eye exam and new glasses. They always made me self concious so I have lived blurry for quite some time now. No more, I say!

Tim, sorry for the reference but if you are a fantasy reader, give the series a try :)

Shatbat, glad there is someone else who read all five books at all. It took me 3mos to read all five but only because I had to wait 2mos for Dance w/ Dragons to come out. Best fantasy series since Tolkien.

Welcome!

Same here! I read most of the books years ago. Arya was my favorite character. Haven't been able to watch the series since I can't afford cable. Nice to meet you. I'm 45, female, and undiagnosed but pretty sure anyway. These people are great.

Not to fear Mind. You aren't missing anything you didn't read. They are doing it justice though (giant relief).

Nice to meet you too!

Today I used the words quandry and retort in the same sentence. I did not think they were obscure or outdated but somehow they required further explanation. Now thats just laziness, no?

My favorite character too! Ever since her first appeareance, and after all that character development, I'm dying to see what will it be of her in the next book.
