I'm sorry your life got upturned like that. Sounds cataclysmic! I aspire to live by the mantra "truth before utility" so I don't think being true to yourself is ever bad thing. I guess I'm a bit confused as to what you mean by "pretending to be normal" and how that led you to snap.

Mimicry is a common coping mechanism for aspies in a neurotypical world. I was quite good at it. But not expressing my true feelings, not allowing myself to have my "tantrums" that I need to release all that bad energy, not accepting my limitations, that's what really did me in.

I'm still trying to figure what exactly it means to be neurotypical. Judging from some comments on this site, you'd think it's a curse. Is it merely about suppressing eratic behaviour? Regarding tantrums, I occationally have ridiculous venting sessions at home (which I usually come to regret) or I unleash my wrath at bad drivers to the non-existant audience in my car. Is that the sort of thing you mean by tantrums?

Haha, I too rant like a madman in the car. Neurotypical refers to a normal person. Aspies often tend to regard NTs with disdain since NTs dominate our world. That's where the "wrong planet" thing comes in, we have trouble understanding their language and behavior.

Can't we all just get along? To me it seems rather unlikely that the world can be divided cleanly this way. Most people who I would consider normal turn out to have their own set of quirks once you get to know them better.

I concur. I think a lot of people with AS got bullied by the normal kids and hold resentments. I used to.

I probably would have been bullied a lot too had I not been fairly big and into martial arts in my youth.

That's not to say I didn't have to deal with underhanded slights, avoidance and people saying s**t about me behind my back. A lot of anger built up over those situations; I would have preferred if they had just picked fights so I could react in satisfying and decisive manner.

Anyone else diagnosed so late?

Yes. I am 39 and was diagnosed almost 3 years ago. I was mis dx'd with bipolar for many years prior. I am also in SoCal.
