As corny as that poem is, I really, really like it. Thanks Nan.

Did you know that Canada has a global strategic reserve of maple syrup?
http://www.investopedia.com/slide-show/popular-items-to-steal/#axzz2MajIGN4E

Quote:
In September, the Quebec Maple Syrup Producers reported the theft of a large quantity of maple syrup. During a routine inventory, workers found 16,000 empty 45 gallon barrels at the province's global strategic reserve located in St-Louis-de-Blandford, Que. The missing syrup, valued at more than $20 million, is the subject of an ongoing police investigation.

Canadian police recently reported the discovery of 600 barrels of the stolen syrup in New Brunswick, but they aren't providing additional details. The syrup was returned to the reserve in a 16-trailer convoy under police escort. Security at the reserve was tightened to prevent future heists.

I am disturbed to find out about the strategic reserve only because of theft (some people would say I am disturbed, period, but that is another matter), but reassured that the Mounties are in pursuit. I feel so much safer now!

Hmmm. This being Canada, the gallons should be imperial, so 4.546 litres. Density is 1.33. 45 gallons of syrup should weigh 272 kg, plus the weight of the barrel. 16000 empty barrels is 4353 tons. How well guarded was this strategic reserve? Maybe I don't feel so safe after all...

oh my.

that reminds me of a trip we took to wales. stayed in a bed and breakfast. the woman there was convinced we REALLY would want maple syrup with breakfast. neither of us like the stuff. she tried to convince us for like 5 minutes that she had "real" maple syrup and how much we'd like it.

sigh.

Sorry. My fault. I'll clean up the coffee. May I point out that Mrs Deirdre Manners is very firm on the subject of snorting coffe out of your nose being unladylike? Not saying that that there is more than circumstantial evidence of it getting onto the muffins by that route. Just speculating. You know, like a jury does:

Jury to judge wrote:
Can a juror come to a verdict based on a reason that was not presented in court and has no facts or evidence to support it, either from the prosecution or defence?

(From http://www.guardian.co.uk/law/2013/feb/20/vicky-pryce-trial-10-questions)
Do you find it reassuring that the judge said no?

The Daily Mail, that bastion of journalistic integrity (in the spirit of "Fair and Balanced" just in case you are unfamiliar with that most august publication), the arbiter of good taste and paragon of restraint (note all the examples of such on the right) provides you with the following, eminently pertinent information:
Daily Mail wrote:
Of the eight women and four men on the Vicky Pryce jury, only two were white - the rest appeared to be of Afro-Caribbean or Asian origin. ...
It was noted during the Pryce case that many of the jurors were dressed casually, and none of the men wore shirt and tie.

The horror! The horror! Don't they know that the male brain only works properly when blood flow is carefully regulated through a tie? Without a tie, what's to prevent it from overheating? And imagine all the cost to the taxpayer of all that wasted effort of the court officials. They could have spent that money hanging people!

(Why did I read the Daily Mail? I heard of their justified concerns on the BBC, and wanted to mainline the motherlode of wisdom, unadulterated by the liberal media.)

After the writer's critique group, I bought more chicken food, a baby pullet, and a thornless boysenberry plant. Came home and planted the boysenberry and settled the chick in a bird cage so hairless dog won't treat it like a chicken nugget. Spring. Steps. Yes.

I would love to take a picture of the white chick with black spots mottling its back, but that would require a skill set and a set of equipment I don't have.

I'm not a good Canadian. I don't like maple syrup or hockey. I don't say 'eh' and I hate snow and cold.

Oh NO... I didn't get married! Just the opposite in fact. I am in the process of filing for a much needed divorce. It was Hartzofspace that got married I believe. No getting married for me. In fact the very thought is causing me to break out in a rash as I write. I'm good at many things but marriage is apparently not one of them.

Due to the fact that dumpster diving and a lack of internet access in the back alley are also highly unappealing to me, I switched from the 2 year Psych/Soc. program at the college that would need to be followed by 2 to 4 years at the University. I depend on student funding and they don't seem to think we need to eat AND have a roof over our heads. I am doing extremely well in the Special Needs Educational Assistant 2yr. diploma program. I finished my first field placement at a kindergarten this past week. I was given permission to volunteer for the rest of the school year so I can continue to work with the 4 kids I've been working with. I finally got through to the 2 tough cookies and I didn't want to leave them high and dry. The kindergarten teacher has a class of 18 kids, 6 who are coded and have IPP's and she had no SNEA's or any other assistants in the class at all. So, even though I'm in college I'm still hanging out with the under 6 crowd. After my 2yr detour and when I have my SNEA diploma I'm going to work and use the diploma to count as the first 2 yrs. of a sociology degree at Athabasca University.

8O I only just saw this now. Depending on how informative the podcasts are I may not be back for another 6 months. I'm finished my courses for this term in 3 weeks. Thanks... I think.... :)

Ah, well, I'll just congratulate you on that, then. Is it a greater or lesser congratulation, though? I need to know how much vicarious relief I should feel. And should we throw rice, or pick it up?

Wouldn't want you to do anything rash. That would be against all tradition, here in the Cafe.

Stick to dumpster snorkling. Once you avoid the need for decompression, everything gets a lot easier, as this woman's smile demonstrates:Image
