Hello all,

I was unofficially diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome last year by my therapist. I have not yet gotten a psychological assessment or test for Asperger's but I know I have it. I have no access to an assessment right now. Before that, my friends suggested that I may have it, but everybody else including my previous therapist did not notice it in me.

The main reason for posting to these forums besides talking to likeminded people is that I am going through a crisis and I need help. I was wondering how you others on the spectrum cope with everyday life. That seems the hardest for me. I have alot of problems with no real solutions or answers, so I came here looking for help.

I have a hearing disorder called Hyperacusis (maybe related to my Asperger's) where almost every sound is too loud and hurts my ears. I have to wear earplugs everywhere I go, and also sunglasses too because my eyes are sensitive to light. I actually acquired this years ago from being at a loud dance club one night.

I have been trying to cope ever since, but then I found out I have Major Depression. I often lack energy and motivation for anything, work or leisure related, and have a hard time getting up in the morning no matter how long I slept. I am on 3 anti-depressants though: Welbutrin, Prozac, and Abilify.

As for my Asperger's, I am completely on my own aside from a weekly visit with my therapist and sometimes a social worker. I see my psychiatrist too, of course, but it's the everyday, moment-to-moment things that I struggle with.

I have a long distance girlfriend who loves me for everything that I am. I am truly lucky/blessed because otherwise I've had alot of trouble in the dating world.

I work an odd job for very low pay ($30/day) but that is all I can do right now, and sometimes struggle with even that. I live with my brother rent free because I cannot support myself right now. I am waiting on work rehabilitation services, ACT team (social workers), and SSDI to help me, but those things take time to process and approve. I also am trying to get a low-income apartment for people with disabilities and that is also in the works.

In conclusion, I just want to know what you all do to get by, because these days, I feel like I am barely getting by. Feel free to offer any advice or just say hi :) Thank you all.

I am new here too... And just wanted to say, I found it helps me to switch earplugs, wax/cotton/foam/ear-planes and I also have noise canceling earphones. I suppose you got rid of the fluorescent lights and LEDs already? Good luck.

Hello and welcome! you might benefit from some of the previous threads on this site and i hope you find what you are looking for. You have come to the right place for support because the people here kind of rock
anyway DeannaTroi had a very good point about the noise cancelling headphones, I have a pair that I use for when I travel which do wonders for me but it seems that my sensitivity isn't nearly as high as yours. Good luck, I wish I could help more

I get by with earplugs, earmuffs, hat, and sunglasses. People might think I look weird, but whatever. It's what I do to get by. Can't get rid of LEDs because my brother has them, but I try to avoid them as much as possible.

What I am struggling with right now is everyday functioning. I feel like I am barely getting by. I have done much better in the past, but nowadays it only seems worse and worse. :( I missed several days of work this week and struggle to get out of bed. Maybe it is a depressive episode. I really don't like my job, either, but it's all I have for now, unfortunately. Also, the Abilify I am on makes me very restless and I know it has been at least a month since I've been on it. It's a drag, but I need to be on it.

Yes. I know what you mean about having to deal with sensitivity and depression episodes.

Honestly to deal with bright light I tend to close my right eye. Everyone looks at me weirdly but it helps. Anyway I am new and am glad to find out that this website exists.
