My brother has recently been diagnosed with aspergers which caught me off guard. To understand more I have been doing research on the subject.I honestly don't know if I am being paranoid but so many characteristics sound very familiar.I have to see the doctor anyway next week so I want to make enquiries about getting tested.I have taken the aq test and scored 36.I suspect it runs on my dad's side of the family as he has dyslexia, all my cousins have dyslexia and similar conditions.I am the only female on that side of the family. What I find frustrating is that my family brush off the idea of me having it too.Growing up me and my brother are very similar so i never suspected aspergers. Will have to see what happens next.

First, hello and welcome!

I believe it's under-recognized in women. I hypothesize that there may be some natural, hard-coded behaviors that mimic emotional response and socialization. I'm not a scientist, and I'm not up to speed on the latest research in this area. I just have _a_lot_ of data points for women who are behavioral outliers.

Regardless, I hope you find the peace you're looking for. Have a look through the General Autism Discussion & The Haven forums. For me that was very eye-opening. As in, I was browsing threads constantly muttering "I do that," "Yea, I do that too!" and "That's related to Autism?!? I thought I just like that 'just because.'"

I have started to read Aspergirls and am finding it fascinating. It seems more straightforward to diagnose men and hope I can find someone to help.If I am an aspie it will give me a great sense of relief, however if not I will feel totally lost.Watch this space

Both of my brothers were diagnosed first. Even though my issues have been called more drastic, it is just not as commonly diagnosed in woman. I, officially, got diagnosed with an asd that wasn't exactly aspergers due to the fact that I am, mostly, non verbal but it took a couple of years after them to even get thought of as possibly having. Just be yourself and the best of luck to you.

Just had a conversation with my husband trying to explain my need for answers.what does he say, I'm being a hypochondriac and making my answers on these aspie quizzes fit the result I am looking for, essentially he diagnoses me as just being really shy.

Had my aspie assessment test today. The final result next week but the psychiatric nurse said he is 99.9% sure I do not have it.On the other hand he said he only read up about aspergers last week.It is my understanding that female traits are a lot more subtle and different to men in some ways. Not sure how to take being told I am just a socially awkward introvert. He hasn't even marked my questionnaires yet

Well there's somebody who uses the term "psychiatric nurse" rather liberally.

How can you be a nurse and not know about a condition as prevalent as Autism? And to put forth a qualified opinion, to boot ("99.9% sure you're not"... based on what, dude, your one week's digestion of what was almost certainly a high-notes article?!)

This may be where a second opinion comes into the picture. Your statement calls into question their level of expertise.

To say I am frustrated now is an understatement. My brother was diagnosed by an autism spectrum expert with 20 years experience.I got the feeling that he was just going through the motions with his checklist, frequently interrupting what I was trying to say. This nurse tried to qualify his 99.9% diagnosis certainty by saying that someone better qualified will look over his notes.I'm sorry but I don't think he was asking the correct questions. Why wasn't I interviewed by the expert in the first place.I was astounded at all the assumptions he made and judgements based on his brief research. As for special interests, I have a one year old son to look after and to be completely honest I spend all my time looking after and amusing him.I am in the Navy and sadly I think this is the end of the road with this career.
