What is your first name? Martin

Age: 48, soon to be 49

Location: East Anglia, UK

Religion: Atheist. I think about god or gods in the same way as I do about Santa Clause, the Tooth Fairy and the so-called "Flying Spaghetti Monster": while theoretically they could exist, in the absence of any objective and rational evidence for them, the only reasonable conclusion is that they almost certainly do not.

Politics: Right-of-center. For me, UKIP were the best of a bad lot; I say "were", because if they want to keep my vote they will have to be more proactive in weeding out the extremists; they have failed spectacularly in recent months. What I want is control over our own laws, a criminal justice system that prefers victims over criminals and in general our National Sovereignty back from the EU. Is there anybody I can safely vote for other than the Raving Loonies? :(

Hobbies and Interests: Astronomy, cosmology, mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, the cat fancy, walking (both for health and for scenery).

Why are you here? To find a partner: the AS female singles pool in my segment of RL is very small. To share experiences: both for carthartic reasons and, hopefully, to help others like myself.

When were you diagnosed? A few years ago. First by a GP while experiencing depression and stress, confirmed by a psychiatrist a year or so later. Where I live, the NHS did not at the time fund diagnosis for adults; I have thus not been able to take the usual battery of psychometric tests; however, looking back at my history and considering my emotional and psychological state prior to recovery, it all makes sense and it is pretty clear that I have AS.

Favorite subjects: Astronomy, cosmology and computer science.

Year/Grade: BSc (2/i) in Computer Systems in the late 1980s; MSc in microelectronics in the early 1990s.

Do you keep pets? A ginger cat. A BIG ginger cat. I am keeping him on a diet, as he would eat all day if he could :)

Favorite music: Heavy Rock (e.g., Hawkwind and Raven); Heavy Metal (e.g., Agent Steel and Overkill); Baroque (e.g., Bach and Handel).

Books: My life is in such flux and I am so busy that I barely have time to read. Previously, and I hope subsequently: Science-Fiction (e.g., Jack of Shadows, an interesting fusion of SF and Fantasy); "sword and sandals" Fantasy (e.g., The Knight & Knave of Swords); Non-fiction, the more eclectic the better, (e.g. Medieval Russian Laws, Irrationality - The Enemy Within, Honourable Cat (poetry); and, though not strictly a book, Wikipedia's articles on mathematical philosophy, astronomy and cosmology).

TV shows/movies: TV: Stargate SG-1, Star Trek Enterprise, The Sky at Night, Great British/European Train Journeys, The Code (and anything else by Professor du Sautoy), Horizon (anything involving Cosmology or Physics), What We Still Don't Know (a bit old, but groundbreaking for its time, great stuff from Professor Sir Martin Rees) and for pure entertainment: Midsomer Murders. Boxed DVD sets: The History Channel: Egypt, Barbarians, Engineering an Empire and my favourite, Clash of the Gods). I have also watched my way through most Agatha Christie detective series, Morse, Lewis, New Tricks and Endeavour. Movies: Dredd 2D (2012), The Punisher (2004).

Instrument: Piano - I can play a little by ear. As a child, I could read music up to a point.

Do you like sports? To watch: Football, Cricket. To play: no.

Family: I have been single nearly all my life and have no children. I am on good terms with most of my birth family and we all keep in touch, primarily with Facebook.

Clothing: I prefer soft, comfortable clothes coloured black, dark blue or deep red.

How did you find this website? I can't remember, it was all too long ago :)

Job: Unemployed and receiving Jobseekers Allowance. I am getting very good support for my disability from the local Jobcentre Plus and Mencap; sadly, others aren't so lucky. I am seeking administration and reception roles. The latter might seem a strange choice for an Aspie, but my AS related problems have less to do with empathy and more to do with certain aspects of cognition, ones for which I can get training. I am fortunate that my family have helped me with access to a vehicle; a significant minority of job advertisements in my area state that own transport is required due to a rural location.

How do you get around? I have a full, clean UK driver's licence and a car. I prefer to walk, catch the bus or take the train; however, as stated earlier, East Anglia is very rural; most of my social life and several of the jobs for which I am applying require private transport to reach. I hope also to buy a bicycle at some point; I used to enjoy riding.

Plans for the future? Find a really sweet-natured and truly nice AS woman with whom to share lifelong true love, or as close an approximation (to the ideal of true love) as actually exists; find employment that is satisfyingly challenging; own a home of my own; show cats in competition; speak about autism and astronomy to the general public.

What do you look like? See my entry in the Post a Picture of the Real You. thread.

Any comments? To get a fuller idea about me, just click the find all posts link on my profile; however, here's a brief summary.

* I have always been looking for "others like me" since secondary school but didn't know exactly what that meant. I thought things would change at University, but even at postgraduate level, most of the gang were clever NTs rather than Aspies and was quite surprised that nobody else wanted to sit quietly over tea and discuss philosophy and logic. I did sort of start a mini campaign that year to replace some droll electrical engineering module on our course with "Formal Methods pt 2"; I guess that was a small victory for reason and science :)

* I did have a job for ten years, but it all went wrong due to the work changing; it was really the wrong job to begin with, but was all I could get, given my then-unknown AS and the depression of the early 1990s.

* I spent all but the last few months receiving ESA, a disability based social security benefit; I took part in various employment rehabilitation programmes; leaned to drive; and got something of a social life. I improved slowly but surely, both in employability and in my personal life; my volunteering in a customer-facing role helped a lot; however, due to lack of effective support I became stuck in a rut.

* Meanwhile, after a couple of years admiring her from a distance and lacking the social skills to romance her, I developed enough to fall in love a year or so ago with a really nice AS woman I knew at the astronomy club. It didn't work out for various reasons, not least her insecurity about her own AS.

* Being otherwise well adjusted and hiding her AS very cleverly, it was a shock to realise just after she had turned me down that yes, she really was in many ways a "female version of me"; I had given up hope that such a person existed, having believed that she was probably just a very eccentric NT. The whole idea seemed too good to be true and, apparently terrified of being "outed" as AS, she had been hiding under my nose all that time.

* The shock and pain of rejection did at least catalyse me into action; a bit like Pearl Harbour bringing the USA into WWII; it awoke the sleeping giant. I just started, out of desperation, to do something about the personal flaws I perceived; it was very slow at first, but I just kept on going where the younger me would have given up. As a result, many life skills and knowledge patterns, the kind NTs take for granted, suddenly made sense all at once; it was as if I had just walked out of an endless bank of fog and into the sunlight.

* After nearly a year, I am almost down to my correct weight, have massively improved life and employability skills, have much better support for job seeking despite my disability; have a much-better personal life; and am getting physically fit again. It was an utterly horrible experience, but it paved the road to recovery. I now want to enjoy the things I have missed out on in life so far; things that NTs take almost for granted.

* Most importantly, I am over the woman I spoke of; she and I were recently able to talk to each other almost normally. I hope that somebody exists out there with whom I can be at least as good or a better match.

* I would like to find that person and it is primarily to that end that I am here on Wrong Planet.

What is your first name?
First name is Ryan, nicknamed by some as RC.

Age: 22 chronologically.

Location: Tristate, USA.

Hobbies and Interests:
I would reach the character limit before I covered everything, so I'll do this by media type/genre:
Comics, anime/manga/whatnot, Western media(i.e. DC comics cartoons as a popular example, like Batman Beyond), video games/VG culture, entering tournaments involving
said games, the list goes on.

Why are you here?
Well, I'm here to see the perspective of others with my condition; I haven't really talked with anyone that ISN'T neurotypical, oddly(done pretty well so far, too).

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder):
With Asperger's, around when I was 4 or 5, not 100% certain.

Favorite subjects:
A few overarching fields,, to cover massive areas;
History, Science, Technology/Engineering, Biology, Psychology, Literature, and more that don't immediately spring to my mind.

Year/Grade:
Graduated HS in '09.

Favorite music:
Epic Rap Battles(does that count?), AC/DC, Eminem, Fort Minor, Black Sabbath, and more I can't remember without looking back.

Books:
I'll stick with recently-read ones/plan to read shortly: Atomic Robo, The Dark Knight Returns(highly-influential Batman comic), Ranks of Bronze, Excalibur Alternative, Transformers: Hearts of Steel, All Hail Megatron, Last Stand of the Wreckers,

TV shows/Movies:
Pacific Rim, The entire Gundam franchise, How to Train Your Dragon, the DCAU and every show in it, the Marvel Movieverse, Red Dwarf, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, the Transformers franchise overall(even at it's low points), uhhh, and lot more I won't list here due to post length concerns.

Instrument:
I have no selective preference for any one instrument; as for playing one, I used to play the viola(basically a larger version of a violin), and I can sing pretty well.

Do you like sports?
Some, yes, football, and many other contact sports appeal to me the most

How did you find this website?
It might sound odd, but through TVTropes.

Job:
Not yet, but shortly.

What is your first name? Julia. I don't think my name suits me.

Age: 17

Location: West coast of BC Canada

Hobbies and Interests: Music, psychology, optics, Nordic culture, art and the paranormal.

Why are you here? To burn time and discuss stuff.

When were you diagnosed? I was diagnosed with autism when I was four. I obviously had something, but no one could agree on a diagnosis. My mom kept the autism diagnosis because of services and funding. Right now I'm questioning how accurate my diagnosis is. I did have a lot of problems picking up social cues as a child, but it seemed to be more attention related. Once I trained myself to pay attention to social cues I got better way faster. A lot of the socially inappropriate things I did were caused by impulse control problems. I think ADHD fits me better than autism.

Favorite subjects: Art, computers and math.

Year/Grade: 12

Favorite music: Some indie rock, electronic music and Nordic folk music.

Books: Books that I can relate to, psychology and some fantasy. I need to get back into reading. I don't really know what I like.

TV shows/Movies: Independent and foreign films, trashy talk shows, and documentaries.

Instrument: Piano and accordion.

Do you like sports? I hate most sports, but I enjoyed gymnastics as a kid.

Family: Mom, dad, stepmom, stepdad and younger sister.

Clothing: Vintage clothing, don't care that much about comfort, bright colors and black, I also love polka dots.

How did you find this website? Google

Job: None right now. I'm only 17.

Plans for the future? Work at an optical lab and get a career in music if it's possible. I also want to fall in love. I'm also trying to detox so my brain can work more normally.

Any comments? I don't think any diagnosis actually fits me. I think I'm just a unique person with a unique brain.

Age:

Saratoga Springs New York
Hobbies and Interests:
Making Costumes, Weight Lifting, Zumba, Research, Psychology, Cooking, Writing Jokes, Tarot Cards, Anime, Video Games, Foreign Language, Reading.
Why are you here?
I’m at the end of my rope. My racing thoughts have gotten to the point where negative thoughts of suicide, hopelessness , helplessness are autonomic. I live everyday in fear. Fear from authority figures , strangers , people in general. My coping skills aren’t helping me anymore. My perception is incredibly warped , but I keep looking for evidence. People are also scared of me. I learned how to survive in social settings because I received my BA in psychology as well as my own research. Plus I know how to play the part of the “normal person” and it’s been making me sick. If I were to be myself around the people that I have to surround myself with, they would be scared , even though I haven’t done anything, label me, etc .Despite all of that, my life is actually great, but my inner critique keeps telling me I’m nothing and to strive for perfection.
I’m here because I need help realigning my perception. Since Aspergers hasn’t been in the DSM for too long, books, research, specialist..they’ll all scarce. SO I can’t put my nose in a book to solve this problem.
When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder):
Three of my social workers at my graduate school spent 6 weeks with me, and these were people who have been working with Autistic kids and people with Aspergers
Favorite subjects:
Psychology, Japanese, Nutrition , Biology, Chinese,
Year/Grade:
Graduate Student
Favorite music:
Heavy Metal, Parody, J-Pop, classic rock.
Books:
Anything Non-Fiction
TV shows/Movies:
Anime, Doctor who, Archer, Invader Zim, The Boondocks, Arrow, Supernatural . Too many to put down.

Instrument:
Guitar
Do you like sports?
Boxing, Weight Lifting
Family:
1 Brother , Mother, father.
Clothing:
I love hoodies and Geek Shirts
How did you find this website?
Another Asperger Friendly website
Job:
Fitness Coach, Zumba Instructor, Seamster, Ordained Minister
Plans for the future?
Get my Masters in applied nutrition. Get involved with pharmaceutical sales
Any comments?
I’ve been fighting this for 25 years, since I threw my first fit. I;ve never asked for help, but I’m realizing that I need it.
