Aspergers and DTD
Hello ….
I’m new to this group. I have nothing but admiration for this fantastic group, as well as for all those people with blogs and videos about their inner life. Thank you all.
I was diagnosed with Aspergers over a year ago. I had strong suspicions about that for over two years previous to diagnostic.
Why did I decide to have a diagnostic at my age (67)? Why, when all the online tests strongly pointed towards Aspergers?
Because I know I can perform great rationalization feats, and I needed to know if it was a want of mine (product of my rationalization), or if it was real as perceived by a professional.
Because I have the inner need to explain myself to myself. And the Fog of Life never lifted enough to give me a view of myself. Maybe now it will.
Added to the array of Autistic characteristics, I also have Developmental Topographical Orientation Disorder (DTD): my navigational system doesn't work. I can’t follow simple navigational instructions. I’m also am unable to process geometrical perspective. Until recently I understood the strong influence these navigational aspects have on my behavior.
Anyone else has DTD added to being in the Autism range?
Peace

I am thinking of starting a thread on this in general discussion, but I am not sure what you are talking about. I think it is similar to things I experience every day. I like to be careful walking around because I have trouble judging the distance of things. This is really hard with "tight" squeezes like doorways. I will also sometimes bump my head on things that I forgot were above me. I also get really anxious walking near people because it seems like they are going to walk into me. I call it the line of scrimmage. A group of two or more people will walk next to each other and not give way to people coming the other way. It is like they are playing chicken or something. Sometimes they will break away at last moment, but a lot of times they brush me or even walk right into me. This has caused me to try a few new tactics. Most of the time I will try to avoid the thickest part of a crowd and take the path of least resistance. This will usually mean taking a different route. If I do have to deal with the line of scrimmage I will just stop, which usually works, but they will sometimes walk into me if I am standing completely still. Sometimes the only thing to do is just turn sideways, put my head down and brace my shoulder for impact.
