Sure thing. Peter Hammill´s voice is often describe as a vocal version of Jimi playing guitar :D

Argh, I made a reply and IE crashed on me....

Here´s the short version (which is actually for the better for in the original version I went on and on and on and... you get the picture).
Some like his voice, some don´t and there´s really no argument either way. Does coffee taste good? It´s personal.
Among his fans are Fish (who put to album sleeves in the artwork for Fugazi), Johhny Rotten, Bruce Dickinson, David Bowie, Marc Almond, Radiohead etc. He is a musicians´ musician.

Albums you might try by Van Der Graaf Generator:
Pawn Hearts (organized chaos)
Godbluff (more structured)
Vital (live album, the full force)

Solo:
The Margin (live with a full band)
Veracious (Hammill on piano and guitar, Stuart Gordon on electronic voilin)

Four of the songs on Veracious were from a concert I went to w00t!! !! ;)

You may like it or you may not.

PS you can check him out on YouTube, lots of material and he doesn´t mind it being out there. The sound quality often is below par but you take what you get :D . Search for ´Peter Hammill´ or ´Van Der Graaf Generator´.

I very much understand it. As I said, you may like it or you may not.
If it is your kind of music, it´s great, if it´s not, there´s nothing to see there :D
And there´s enough good music to make everybody happy.

I like DMB but no one else does

I met them back in grad school at UVa. Some guys I know are in the band The Samples and they used to play with them a lot. I had backstage passes when they opened for DMB and got to meet them.

A few months later, while delivering pizzas for Papa Johns in Charlottesville, I ran into Carter again. I delivered two pizzas to his Mom's house. Then, a few weeks after that, I delivered a couple of pizzas to his house in a gated community. He tipped me 100% both times. Really nice guy.

Oh yeah:

R.E.M.
The Samples
Beastie Boys
U2

however would chose soulfly over rammstein any time

those are two of my favourites too 8)

also got a thing for eastern european folk music with balls for example: farmer's market, gogol bordello and the appropriately named dr asperger's klezmer tonic have all been bands that i have particularly enjoyed lately.

Peter Hammill is kind of Leonard Cohen but more rock in the mix and less cheerful.

not familiar with Peter Hammill, will definately give him a listen (after hiding all the razor blades - if your comparison with 'laughing lenny' holds up).
