8O 8O Well, I'll be darned, soy sauce is made with fermented soy beans.

And soy milk is ground dry beans mixed with water, oil and an emulsifier.

and then there's tofu. unfortunately.

the kid is a japan-o-phile as well. just finished the language degree, with an honors certificate. that's why she's now a typist. ;)

oh, this is depressing.
i keep thinking that someday i'd give classroom teaching a go again. perhaps as a sub, once i retire from this place. i just looked up requirements and pay, and subbing is pretty much minimum wage work these days. no wonder they can't find people to do it. :( granted, this summary is a few years old, but i suspect it hasn't changed too much.

Lactuca sativa, I do believe. :D We do have Artemisia absinthium growing in our backyard. I am rather fond of people who are obsessed with green stuff as long as it is growing green stuff and not paper green stuff. Or the by-product of a cold. :P

I buy Endive also but still have some in the fridge. :wink:


(A little mother bragging, my oldest is not a fan of Wikipedia and has been learning the scientific names of plants and animals since he was in early elementary school. All of my kids can identify the flora in and around Lethbridge by name and if it has a medicinal use, they know about it. An Aspie (or maybe just obsessed) mom isn't such a bad thing. :lol: )

The first is Soy sauce and the "extracted juice" soy milk, which I believe is made by cooking the beans down to a paste. I see Mom prescribed research in his future.

And yes, Nan, he is a good cook. He is also an Aspie with a perseveration that involves Japan which means that, left to his choice, we would be eating a lot of sushi and tempura.


ah so, miso drippings are 'soy sauce!' in the strict sense of the word. Exposing :oops: my old communial roots having made tofu and miso and tempeh! Hey, your son would love making tempeh ! Especially after you make tofu from whole beans ground up you can use the pulp for the tempeh base (and you sprinkle mushrooms spoors over it and 'bake' it in a box of cookie sheets with an electric light bulb in it! He will love it in the winter! it smells so wonderful!).

Hey Merle! As I type this, there's a pot full of vegies and shortribs stewing away in the oven. We tend to go by the "more is better" theory when it comes to meal planning, so we somehow ended up buying, and cooking, something like 5 kilos of ribs instead of 5 pounds.

There will be leftovers. :lol:

PS: I used half of an eighty-dollar bottle of wine in it. Nine-year-old vintage Shiraz. My husband reckons it's better than Amarone. :lol: :lol: :lol:
