September 1987: At the end of a honeymoon that had been marked by almost being denied leave, a blown radiator hose on the way out of town, and three nights out of commission due to mononucleosis, my first wife and I were returning to my duty station in Nebraska, coming from San Diego (where I had introduced her to family). As we descended the pass from New Mexico to Colorado, the front brakes came apart, reducing our braking ability by more than 50%.

August 1989: I was about to be discharged from the Air Force, and was moving my family to my "home of record", San Diego (where I had enlisted). Apparently, we were struck by another car just outside Barstow, CA, and sent bouncing and rolling across the desert floor in our heavily-laden Subaru station wagon. (I say "apparently" because I can't remember anything from about fifteen minutes prior to the accident, until I was being loaded into the ambulance.)

December 1990: We were living in a tent high in the foothills of Mt. Rainier. The area had been covered with three feet of snow, and I had contracted an ear infection so massive it had moved into my sinuses. I was on powerful antibiotics, and Vicodan for the pain. Then a warm-air pattern, a Pineapple Express, hit the area, causing much of the snow to melt in the ensuing rain. Our camping spot was flooded out, most of our worldly goods (such as they were) washing downstream.

Yes, over the years, the universe has made some determined (and imaginative!) attempts to rid itself of me. Today, I celebrate 45 years of foiling those attempts! :) Happy birthday to me!

Found this joke:

Quote:
"Never say to an autistic person, you do the maths"

I recently heard that a nanometre is how much a fingernail grows in a second, and immediately started converting that into growth per week to see whether it's a realistic estimate. Would that be an example?

Then there's this:

My mother has been released from hospital after having a near fatal heart attack. She is 96 and a tough old bird.

She is stayig with me. I am an hour north of her.

I really don't know what to do at the moment. She has been here for 24 hours and she is very weak, She is supposed to be on a high energy, high protein diet - 6 small meals a day. I give her a few teaspoons of yoghurt as one meal, a sliver of cheese for another, and a quarter of a glass of broth from a stew I made for another.

She can hardly talk.

So there you go. There are all sorts of other worries. I know she would have moved in with me at any stage but it is a matter of survival for me. She always said she would not move into a nursing home. As far as I am concerned if she needs constant nursing, that's where she goes.

So I have to be patient and hope her appetite improves, and then her energy. I just do't know how long to wait before I make the moves to have her assessed for nursing home placement. It could take months.

Robyn

Nanarob,

Has the doctor given any advice or direction for the future?

Make sure you find a way to get some time to yourself so you can recharge. Taking care of my mom during her illness wore me out, but it helped me to figure out how to take care of myself when I took care of my dad.

Metta, and karuna, Rjaye.
