yeah, spike is fine. i feel bad for not checking for an expiration date, but i trusted petsmart. HUGE mistake, obviously. :(

went to check on bookend after posting. he had died, as well. one or two were sitting by him, calling, but he could no longer hear them. :( the dove kept going over and shoving him with his beak.

spike did ok for 5 hours alone yesterday afternoon (test). was real clingy when i came back, but ok. he's just taken a bath and is snuggled in a washcloth on my lap right now getting dry and staying warm. :)

Well, nobody's perfect. After all, to my knowledge, we have never had this big of a pet food scare before. The store was clearly at fault, for not clearing all that old food out when it first became known about the poisoning.

i don't know for sure that it's the melamine thing. don't know what did it. the food was manufactured during that time, and it does contain wheat product. but the co's website says they buy all their foodstuffs locally up there in indiana (or michigan or wherever they are)....

i called the store, they said they shouldn't have old product on the shelves and the manager was going to go see that it was taken off them. left a message at the company that manufacturer's it's phone. no call so far. sent an email to petsmart's corporate customer service, they sent an email form letter thanking me for being a loyal customer, with a personalized note saying they were going to forward it to HQ and someone would call me.

if i don't hear anything in a day or two i'll call a media person here who does troubleshooting and see if they can get the food tested. if it's the food, other people should be warned. if it's just something genetically wrong with my birds, there's nothing to be done about it.

I guess I went MIA again...I need to stop doing that. Life gets to me sometimes, and I just have to be in my own space.

Jobs have begun for both my hubby and my son. Making alot less money, hoping it goes somewhere and the world's economy allows us some paychecks before it explodes. Man oh man has it been a stressful couple of weeks. Scary stuff going on in the world, and I react to most of it.

IEP meeting coming up for my daughter, but I think we have an awesome Special Ed coordinator this year who just seems instantly understanding of our needs. I think with his help we can give the teachers a run for their money this time around. My daughter is even feeling comfortable enough to attend her first dance! Homecoming! I'm amazed at her bravery and the reason she wants to go..."It's part of Highschool!" I guess I can't argue much with that. This same wonderful coordinator is finding out who is chaperoning the dance and who wouldn't mind keeping an eye on her.

I see Spike is a movie star now and he's just amazing! I'm impressed!

It'll take me a little while to get caught up and I'm still partially in hiding. Life has been a bit hectic and busy emotionally here. Hope everyone is doing well :)

That was really cute at the end, when he was trying to groom your feathers...

Yeah, but in one respect I really screwed up with Spike. . Once he opened his eyes and identified me, it was all over. (For me, too.) Nothing to do about it now, but to enjoy his company. I'm told they can live up to 10 years!

you have a very nice son, Nan, and I am in admiration of your gentle steady patient hand.

Spike spent his first full day at home alone yesterday (not coming to work with me). He knew something was up when the routine changed. He had his snuggle, then his bath, then got dried off with a towel, had a bit of formula, like always. Then got put in his big cage instead of the traveling cage. I didn't do the usual "go microwave the heating pad" and "get the towel out of the closet and put it over the traveling cage" and he started getting a bit antsy - back and forth in the big cage. I took him out again for one last bit of scritching and he did NOT want to go back in his cage - flew to my bed twice and my computer desk once. Making the "I'm just a pitiful little baby bird" noise he can pull out of his... whenever he's trying to manipulate one of us.

Sigh.

He got put back in the big cage anyway. I could hear him chirping, the whole way walking out to the car. (how the hell can something that's only 1/2 ounce cause guilt????? aieeeee!)

Got home and he literally threw himself at the side of the cage, calling and fluttering to us. We took him out and he zoomed around the room, then came for a snuggle, then zoomed, then snuggled. Wanted a lot of "hand" time last evening. Wanted formula - I don't think he's eating a whole lot while we're gone. I smushed up some of his seeds in a mortal and pestal a bit for him (some are a little large) and made sure there was a good fresh spray of millet and lots of water in his cage before we left, but I don't think he ate much. He had like three baths last night - he'd hop in his picklejar lid and get wet, then hop over to be picked up and toweled off. Then when he'd get dry he'd do it again! I put the pickle-jar lid away after the third one. Spent two hours listening to the radio last night with a bird sleeping on my neck.

Well, I was afraid he was going to give me the "talk to the back, I'm not looking at you, I'm not coming out of the cage" when I got home.....

Oh, the birdfood company called. They are sending a thing via UPS for me to put the food in and ship it to them ASAP so they can test it. They were horrified.

petsmart called three times yesterday (home phone, not work phone, duh!) with the woman sounding a little panicked. they want to test it as well. so i'll be sending some to both and saving some back, for in case.

it's SO hot today. i've got a fan blowing (hot) air on me to cool off and it's not helping. there's NO airflow in this building. don't know the temp, but judging from how i feel it must be the upper 90sF. i hope spike is ok at home - i didn't put him in the front of the house with the a/c because i thought he'd be lonely. didn't realize it was going to get this hot. i'm on the coast and he's 20 miles inland where it is just baking. he's an "australian" bird, so genetically he's supposed to take the heat. and he's got tons of water. but i sure hope he's ok. it'll be 10 to 15 degrees hotter there, at least.

got home late last night, he was alone for 13 hours. had meetings and then got stuck in traffic. the poor thing kept throwing himself at me, holding onto my hair. spent three hours with him preening me obsessively, peeping, getting up, sitting down, peeep peeep. finally got him calmed down and to sleep. this morning he was throwing himself at the bars of the cage again as i was leaving.

i need to win the lottery so i don't have to work outside an air-conditioned house. :(
