Merle, forever the news junkie

As for my Thanksgiving I am making Zuppa de Peche, with wonderful tomatoes and calimari, scallops, shrimp (inna shell) and delicate cod flakes. I am doing this Alli diet and so far it has been quite effective.

Happy Thanksgiving to us'n in the States!

Merle

actually (yawn) from what i can remember them saying, it formed just at the beach at point loma, then was over the bay, and due to hit the downtown gaslamp quarter (tourist hell) when it came back on land. not a huge twister, they said 60 to 80mph winds. with the projected path directly to our place. like a shot. given that our place is just plywood with stucco on the outside, and the windows are the cheap apartment kind from 40 years ago that just rattle in the breeze, i would have gotten probably, well, ok, probably would have wiped us out even at only 80mph winds. nice hook echo on the radar, though. there's a tremendous lack of information about the whole episode on any of the media outlets. if the kid hadn't been here to see it all go by, i'd have said i was dreaming.

very sad about india. insanity never takes a holiday, merle. watching it nonstop would be like watching the fires nonstop. pointless, and pointing out that all i can do is watch it go by on tv.

the turkey is still frozen. we're about to put it in a big plastic storage bin in the bathtub and let the water run over it for several hours.

huh. that oughta do it.

shrimp thing sounds yummy. we're having pizza for supper.

really sad about india....

As soon as mom sends me some pictures, I'll scan them and tack them on the café wall...

Happy birthday Botti, and your dancing badger is adorable. :)

Thanks Merle.

Cheers, everyone who praised my clay work. When I felt the urge to start making more beads, I knew I must be on the improve. These ones are inspired by the seven-pointed star on the Australian flag, and I was thinking about nannarob while doing them.

Yes, definitely improving. This morning I taught myself how to do peyote stitch:

To answer your question, blessedmom, even though I've been crankin' em out at a mad pace, I've no thought of going into commercial sales. There are local shops which could probably sell what I've made, but I can see them saying, "Those necklaces you did in the swirly purple and blue were a real goer; let's have 50 more of those for next week," and I'd be like, "Ho hum, been there, done that. Hey, I wonder how I'd go at making patchwork squares?" and on to the next perseveration. :D

...yep,yep,yep. I don't like to do the same thing twice (and probably couldn't - most happen of their own volition). And never know when my interest will switch to something else entirely. But you do make pretty beads Sleepydragon! :D

I showed about a dozen artworks to my psychiatrist (he's also an art dealer in New York). He only liked one painting, and asked me to paint 1,000 more of the same thing. 8O Sit and make 1,000 of the exact same picture?! 8O #3 would feel like a grind. By #239 I'd be, erm, crazy(er). :P

I just went back and looked at all your beads, SD, as I did not know you MADE THEM YOURSELF! I guess I missed the part where you said you weren't just finding pretty images of professional bead makers on the net.

I wondered where you got such a variety with the same signature look!

and that signature look might be your cachet, too, that they would all be different but still have the 'look' that makes them so outstanding.

Merle

HBD to the latest old geezer.

beautiful beadwork. that's what the kid said to everyone who wanted her to major in art at college so she could "get a job doing it" - she said it's what i love to do. why should i kill it by making it something i HAVE to do to make money?

don't know where all the kid's chromosomes came from, really....

glad you're back, linda.

we didn't have pizza for supper. we went to denny's. like last year, then put the christmas tree up. the place was half empty, but there were a lot of single dads with young kids. i guess it's like in th emovies - dad has custody of the kid(s) for this holiday and set the turkey on fire so they have to eat at dennys.

speaking of turkey, the mafia treatment seems to be working. gotta go change the water. you folks have fun.

YAY!! ! So glad to hear you're feeling better. I've had a few of those "downs" myself as of late.

I understand not wanting to get into selling your handiwork. I've never been able to do that, either. There's something special about creating a unique item.

I'm SSOOOOOOO HAPPY you're back, Sleepy! :D

Well, if you HAVE to sell 'em, you can market them as "one of a kind" and jack the price up higher for it?

I always saw the fun in making the food, myself. I got good at it and was always entertained as long as I cooked and people would only pop in and out of the kitchen (and my consciousness)on their trips back and forth from their socializing. I didn't mind, I had a good palate so the food I cooked was warm and tasty, and people liked that. However I have lost my perseveration for cooking food, so I don't do that any more. So I had to change my strategy.

I didn't have many good holidays when I was invited to join the 'Whomever' Family for Thanksgiving Dinner and then I was locked into their rituals and habits for the feast day. I got wise about 20 years ago when I found they paid good money for people to work on Holidays. So now I work through them, doing my regular 8 hour shift. For me, at home, I cook a nice roman seafood soup over linguine, pop a couple of pomegranates and sip sparkling apple cider for after work, and call it a night.

This way if someone asks me if I 'need' someplace to go for Thanksgiving or Christmas I tell them 'Oh, thank you, that sounds so nice, I had such a good time there last year, too!; but, I am sorry I have to decline because I will be working that day"

Happy Holidays!

Merle

I have to admit, I do miss the double-time pay. But I do also enjoy having 4 days without having to deal with the coworkers....

Livingroom is full of Kid's friends, food is being snarfed and, given how they're eating, they don't get fed away at college. I've had my plate-o- stuff and am happily hiding in the back of the house. I'd forgotten how good carrots taste when you cook fresh ones. And beets in orange juice. Yukon Gold potatos smushed into mashed potatos with the skins on, with garlic in there. The Kid made cranberry dipping sauce from scratch and it's really good. I won't have to cook for the next few days, either. Just hang out and take it easy. That has a lot of appeal.

For some reason, the "special" cat, George's girlfriend cat, has decided that she likes wearing the collar that has all the "reindeer" bells on it - it was in the box of Christmas ornaments we got out yesterday to decorate the place up with. So the cat is wandering around the house with like 8 bells on her collar - we can hear her all the way at the other end of the house. I can't quite figure this one out - she could very easily get out of that collar - it's on so loosely it looks like she's wearing a necklace.
