we are having freezing rain here, and will have snow on the valley floor tonight. The snow rarely sticks unless we get a freeze and then only for a moment or so. The ground doesn't get cold enough, usually. We are very clever here in Oregon, we keep the snow in the upper elevations so we don't have to mess around with it on the valley floors.

you folks learned that from all the californians who moved up there about 10 years ago... :wink: :lol: it's snowing in julian (a small touristy town up in the mountains here) this morning, but just gray here. it did start to sprinkle a little rain yesterday - it was actually quite a nice day. cloudy, spritzing rain now and then, and breezy. the crowds stayed away from the christmas fair, sadly for the merchants. we went back over there and had the place almost to ourselves. the kid found a nice occupied japan era teacup for her teacup collection, and i spent too much in the british lady's tea shop (i'm a sucker for walker's shortbread and turkish delight candy, both of which are now under our christmas tree.)

spent the early afternoon sitting in the living room with the kid - she is knitting me a hat so i'll have one when we go to england. watched the tv a bit (nothing much on), watched out of our big window more often. we're on the second floor and it's a nice view - trees outside, many of the local birds seem to like to be in them at present, with a few new ones i don't recognize. got alarmed a bit around 2pm, i could see the really big palm trees on the other side of our complex swaying to an amazing extent - looked like almost 15-20 degrees off center each way - in the wind - with their branches of dates flinging out and back again! i'd bet there were some palms and eucalyptus trees that went over yesterday. if the ground had been soggier, more would have. they say the most rain is due in tonight and for the next few days, which should make the drive to and from work just a joy. (not) must remember not to park under the eucalyptus trees at work.

try to stay warm, richie and merle!

oh, well. one more week, then holiday!

Didn't get much snow here (yet), but it may well stay below freezing until the end of the year. (I know, you folks on the east coast are sneering at us wimps out here...) :)

Here's a little video to help get you into the Christmas spirit!

Oh my, Richie! Stay warm. It's changes like that that seem to make people catch colds (she said, snurfling). Nanarob, this is the first time I envy you some of your heat. I cannot get warm. I've gotten under several blankets and a down comforter, and shoved the cat under it to keep my feet warm, and I'm just freezing. (Probably why they call a cold a "cold", isn't it?)

I've been propped in bed most of the day, and have spent the last hour trying to figure out what's making my windows rattle. It's not windy, and there have been several times now since about 1:30 where they've done some serious rattling - like when someone opens the front door and the pressure change makes them rattle, only for longer. A few of them went on for quite a few seconds.

There's nobody downstairs. There doesn't seem to be anyone home next door. I keep checking the earthquake page online, since it sure is acting like that, but there's nothing showing up as new earthquakes.

The last one was so noticeable that the cats lit out for another room, the birds stopped singing and got really quiet, and I was wondering if the window was going to crack if it went on longer. Got up, went to the living room, it did the same thing out there a few moments later. The rats ran for cover in their hutch, so I know it's not just the Nyquil causing hallucinations.

I wonder if the military is doing "stuff" again out over the ocean and not telling anyone about it? Hmmm....

RUN, do not walk but RUN to your nearest Grocery or Pharmacy and get

ZYCAM nose swabs!! I swear by them, they work, they cut down the time you have your cold if you can't get them BEFORE it gets worse, but Nan, I swear by them.

@Nan: Staying hydrated on long-haul flights is even more of a challenge than it used to be, thanks to the liquid-aerosol-gel carrying restrictions. Hope you are over the worst of your cold by the time you get on the plane. But if you are still feeling ill, your best bet is to appeal to the sympathies of the flight attendants, so they will keep up a steady supply of those little cups of water. (Or better yet, just leave you with a big bottle. "Unwooded chardonnay, ma'am?" :) )

@DeaconBlues: Hilarious video!

Where I am we have 5 inches of snow and wind chill of 25 below zero. Tomorrow we will have icy rain mixed with snow.

I had to tell someone.

I'm back at work, thanks to all for the suggestions. Looks like the huge bowl of onion and garlic soup, combined with vast quantities of tea, orange juice, and vitamins have really made a difference. Will continue all those (sans the soup - I reek!) and keep taking decongestants to keep all the places that usually get infected open, and hope for the best.

If I'm bleeding outa the eyeballs, I'm still getting on that plane! This is my once-in-a-lifetime.....
