My office is furloughed for two weeks, so I've been sleeping a lot and resting all week. I didn't realize I was so tired, but I must have been because I slept a lot, including napping during the daytime.
We had our traditional Christmas eve pizza and played The Charlie Brown Christmas video we have (since when they aired it on ABC this year they cut half of it out!). I gave the kid new wiper blades for her car and a vintage wool post-WWII French Army Greatcoat (kind of the Capt. Jack from Torchwood look) that I was able to find at Stormin Norman's Fine Gift Emporium. It's still got the label (made in Paris, spelled in French) and is long enough that, when combined with her lack of height, provides substantial protection for her from the cold. She gave me a knitted cap she'd made, with trilobites worked into the design. It's of a special kind of wool and is stretchy enough to fit well. Very nicely done.
We got the cats some new catnip mice, but the blind cat has asthma bad when it's cold and so he's spent his day in leaning on the oil heater in my bedroom. (It's been close to freezing overnights, though in the low 50s during the daytime. The house stays cold, though, until we get up and turn the heat on out in the front rooms for a while.) The old cat enjoyed her mousie for a while, but started limping badly this evening so I carried her in and set her next to the heater as well. She curled up and went to sleep. She's very old, and gets stiff, but she seemed happy before she fell asleep. Purring up a storm.
The birds all got fresh millet sprays and Spike got extra time hanging out outside of his cage, and Tennyson the Rat got to eat a Christmas cookie (junk food is always off-limits for him) and a pecan.
We ate the last of the Jaffa cakes we brought home from England with our cup-o-tea this evening. All and all, a very nice Christmas eve.
Tomorrow we have a small ham cooked with cloves and orange juice, potatoes, fresh carrots, and some nice rosemary rolls for the evening meal, and we will spend the day knitting (I have a machine, the kid does it by hand) scarves and warm gloves/hats for friends of ours who are in the midwest. One can never have enough scarves and warm hats in a winter like this, especially when you work out-of-doors. We will watch old movies on TV, with our tree all lit up, and spend the day at home. In the evening we plan to make some hot cocoa and put it in travel mugs, and then go out for a drive to look at the Christmas lights, before people start taking them down.
Happy Holidays to all!
