I'm along with Lemon - I have been guessing what BSU stands for.

I've looked on Wikipedia, and that doesn't seem to have heard of it.

So I tried http://www.acronymfinder.com and that seems to confirm my suspicion: Black Student Union.
(And Wikipadeia still has no trace of it.)

Having perused the first page of links provided at Acronym Finder, I can only see the webpage for the Auburn group as sounding positive:
http://www.auburn.edu/student_info/bsu/about.html

The other eight I looked at seem to range from making their aims obscure, through plain racist, to militant racist.

The organisation has no existence outside the USA.

Have I got that right?

Sorry, BSU = Black Student Union. A lot of campuses here have one. It's like a club and may or may not be politically active, depending on the chapter. Their demands have finally been made public. Things like "recruit more black students" and "recruit more black faculty" and offer training on how to manage money for people who come from deprived backgrounds so they don't misuse their resources, requiring all students to take a black studies course before they can graduate, a separate building to have as a resource center/safe house, funding for their organization, special tutoring.... There were 32 in total. Some of their demands were for programs that already exist.

I could say something, but since I would run the risk of being fired if it were ever discovered (free speech? hardly), I can't.

Here's a video someone took of the tsunami surge hitting in San Diego Harbor. It was, I think, only about a 2 to 3 footer. Interesting, and not at all what Hollywood paints them to be

I'd recommend turning the sound off, as the banter is... it's better without the sound.

Of course, if you like "exciting" this will be like watching paint dry on a wall.

I go away for a month and miss all the good stuff.

Although I love Poe, reading Lau and PostPaleo puts me in a better mood :D

Nan, I feel for you. I work at a college and I thought OUR politics were dreadful. I am applying for other positions constantly, but IN THIS ECONOMY...

Yesterday was highly annoying. I was really looking forward to sleeping in, but the Hawaii Civil Defense sounded the first (of SEVEN) tsunami alarms at 6am, waking up every citizen in the state, as they are meant to do. The irony of it all is that more chaos was created by the numbers of people rushing out to stock up on food (one store had a 2 case/person limit on Spam) and gas (gas stations were running out of gas by 8am) and evacuations and road closures.

We are on the side of a mountain overlooking Waikiki at about 500 hundred feet, so could just sit and watch the TV which had constant coverage. Mainly it consisted of a webcam focused on Coconut Island in Hilo Bay (which has coconut palms with signs on them showing how high the water rose in each of the past tsunamis, btw).

11 am ETA came and went. At about 11:30, there was ( 8O ) visibly darker water moving quickly in and then out of Hilo Bay! And a washed up fish! Which pretty much summed up the whole experience.

and beleive it or not, I was thinking about you, knowing you had moved to Oahu. I could not take my eyes off the TV showing Hilo Bay all morning. After the all clear, I wondered if it was the best tsunami drill ever done in Hawaii. I gotta say, even on Hawaiian time you guys did GREAT!

If you really want to see some tidal action check out the Bay of Fundy Nova Scotia, there
tides run 40 to 60 feet- a tsunami every 12 hours 20 minutes.

Talking of bores, I live just a few miles down the road...
[b]Severn Bore March 21st 2007[b]

I've not watched one, myself, but the video above is quite expressive (even if the sound track has been suppressed).

PS. I won't embed the video, as I do not wish to exceed the recommended 640 pixels wide for images.

My mother has been deceased for about 15 years, but today is her birthday. I woke up this morning and I said "Happy Birthday, Mom!"

Last year, I was working and answered a call from a gentleman that had a check from my company that was over 8 years old. He wanted to know if we could void it (it was 'stale dated' anyway) and reissue it as it was never cashed. I let him know that after 5 years it was with the unclaimed property on the State unclamed property website and looked it up and printed out all the info he needed to prove who he was an apply to get it released to him.

That started me thinking, and while I was out there on the website I wonder if I had anything out there? Nothing in Oregon, nothing in Minnesota. . hey! something in Kansas, so I sent off for it. It seems my mom's life insurance paid off about 14 years ago and I was to split it with my brother. I sent in my information last year and forgot about it, mostly.

Today, I got an email saying the status had changed, that I was approved and the money would be mailed to me within the week.

:D On mom's birthday! :D What are the odds?

Merle

I have been a target lately of several Hindu gentlemen who would love to come to the States and keep an old lady company. If I also desired for marriage they would not turn down a green card. .

I will be out-of-pocket for a few days, so I won't be (I don't think) posting on WP. Not to worry, back when I can be back.

Merley, that's great about the funds! Hope it actually gets to you unintercepted. Take care.

Oh, the campus thing. Turns out the party was not sponsored by a fraternity, our Chancellor had apologized profusely[and, apparently, continues to do so] for something over which the University had no control, and I fully expect the Koala - once they can publish again - to figure out how to insult all involved. The "death threat" noose was left by a minority female who had no idea of its cultural significance. She and some of her friends found some rope, were fiddling with it, one of them fashioned it into a noose, and three days later it was found in the library near where they left it. Apparently someone had found it and hanged it up on a light fixture. They threw her out of school, she apologized in a front-page campus newspaper article (oddly, funding for that paper was not cut), and people are now beginning to comprehend how incredibly stupid the last week has been.

I really need to retire, I'm too old to put up with this kind of nonsense. Political correctness has run amok one too many times for this old broad.

Glad you're ok in Hawaii - we were glued to the TV, hoping that nothing bad was going to happen to you all.

Nice! You should check out my "What is your superpower" thread.

I wish I knew my Dad's birthday. I can't even remember the day he died, 5 years ago. But I've been thinking about him a lot lately. I have very little family left, most of them in Holland, and just this week found out that one of them is 92 and he wants to see me. It costs about $2000 to get from Hawaii to Holland and I'm thinking I should go before he dies. But that's a boatload of money. Should I stay or should I go?

Well, you know, if you go there will be trouble - but if you stay it will be double.... 8)

Maybe you can tell him you want to come badly, but finances won't let you. If you are lucky, he might make some sort of co-pay offer. You really do need to try to go. On the other hand, you don't want to end up on the street.

Good to see other "Dino-Aspies" here. Though I've been an Aspie all my life, I'm just now feeling comfortable in admitting it. Have to say, it's so nice seeing there are so many like me..and even better seeing some dinos. I don't look my age, most guess me in my early thirties or younger, guess I act even younger than that. Are you older Aspies like that also?
