The Bricklayers Song

June 23, 2007/Show #1256

This song was popularized by Scots singing duo The Corries and is also known as "Why Paddy's Not at Work Today." Amongst many other listeners, physics teachers have written to us for the lyrics to help them teach their students the principals of mechanics.

Dear Sir I write this note to you to tell you of my plight
For at the time of writing it I'm not a pretty sight
My body is all black and blue, my face a deathly grey
And I write this note to say why I am not at work today

Whilst working on the 14th floor some bricks I had to clear
But tossing them down from such a height was not a good idea
The foreman wasn't very pleased he is an arkward sod
And he said I had to cart them down the ladders in me hod

Clearing all these bricks by hand it was so very slow
So I hoisted up a barrel and secured a rope below
But in me haste to do the job, I was too blind to see
That a barrel full of building bricks was heavier than me

And so when I untied the rope the barrel fell like lead
And clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead
I shot up like a rocket, and to my dismay I found
That halfway up I met the bloody barrel coming down

Well the barrel broke me shoulder as to the ground it sped
And when I reached the top I banged the pulley with me head
But I clung on tightly none with shock from this almighty blow
While the barrel spilled out half its bricks some 14 floors below

When these bricks had fallen from the barrel to the floor
I then outweighed the barrel and so started down once more
But I clung on tightly to the rope my body racked with pain
And halfway down I met the bloody barrel once again

Now the force of this collision halfway down the office block
Caused multiple abrasions and a nasty case of shock
But I clung on tightly to the rope as I fell towards the ground
And I landed on the broken bricks the barrel had scattered round.

Now as I lay there on the ground I thought I'd passed the worst
But the barrel hit the pulley wheel and then the bottom burst
A shower of bricks rained down on me I didn't have a hope
As I lay there bleeding on the ground I let go the bloody rope

The barrel now being heavier so started down once more
It landed right across me as I lay there on the floor
It broke 3 ribs and my left arm and I can only say
I hope you`ll understand why I am not at work today .

Here are two versions of the Bricklayer's Song

Oh, my God. (roflmho)

So, the folk song tradition in England isn't dead yet.
My parish priest just happens to be a semi-professional folk musician by hobby; he'd be well interested in a ditty like this.

Or Ireland! I am sure you knew the Clancy Brothers were Irish. Maybe the first of the two videos showed an English duo. I didn't detect an Irish accent.

The main thing is that we appreciate a good song well performed. Thanks Richie for posting. I think I will be hanging out here a bit more, Good music and humor is appreciated here.

(Edit- I see now that the first video shows a Scottish duo. One of the fun things about this type of forum is to nit pick. However, there are some who live in Scotland and Ireland who would object to being called English. :) )

Finally, we get much needed rain! A good soaker. The pollens were making me so sick. At least this will wash most of it away.

I had a feeling that they were going to do this. Now I have to find work fast as I have medical bills piling up on me.

Hope things are going better by now, Richie. Any prospects at all?

Hi Hartz. Que pasa?

~~~~~~~
Ireland. Sigh. We were there three weeks ago. And the Dublin Airport got me again. There is always something that goes wrong at the Dublin Airport, every single time we have to travel through it. Not to the kid, just to me. ONLY the Dublin Airport. Not LAX, not Chicago. Not Atlanta. Not Dallas. Not Minneapolis. Not Gatwick. Not San Diego. Not Edinburgh. Not Birmingham, Not Heathrow. Just Dublin.
I carefully made sure I had no metal on me at all. (The last time we went through the Dublin Airport the underwire in my bra set off their detector. Was wearing my back brace, which has no metal - I selected that particular one in advance because it had no metal in it. I even took my shoes off and put them on the conveyor as they have very small steel shanks built into the arches for support.
I tell them in advance I have a back brace on. Off I toodle. The detector goes off. I take my glasses off, go back through. Same thing. They scan with a wand and can't find why, so I'm told I have no choice but to go for a full body scan. I told them I couldn't have a scan. They said I couldn't fly unless I had one (OMG, trapped in Ireland?) Now, I've had so much radiation in the last year I've been told to get no more, so I told them that. They said it's mandatory, talk to the kid a bit, who says "oh, no, it's not x-rays, it's thermal" which was ok.
So I go in their little room, they have me raise my arms up and turn slowly around in front of the imager - which basically was a wall painted a different color. Call from upstairs - what's that around my middle. (Gee, you think it might have been the back brace I told them about in advance?). Can I take the brace off, please? Sure, but only momentarily. Arms up and turn slowly around. Did so. Call from upstairs. Something wrong with my middle on the thermal scan. Several security guards massing outside the door (I can hear them). Can I please unzip my pants and show them what's there (besides my belly? hmmm, perhaps some radiant, stored up heat FROM WHERE MY BACK BRACE WAS?????) Nothing there but the extra chub from eating pub grub. Funny how that was, huh?
Much examining of back brace, with a comment of "you shouldn't wear a back brace if you are going through security." Oh, right, I'll just drop my pants, pull off my shirt, whup it off in public, then slap it back on while everyone else puts their shoes on. I said something to the effect of "I'll be happy when it's not medically necessary for me to wear it." and that got me several "Oh, yes, we're sure you are. Have a nice day." An apology would have been nice, but what the hell, at least I'm not still stuck at the Dublin Airport.
Sigh. You know, for being mostly of Irish descent, I have come to be ... less than enamored with that country --- and hope I never have to set foot in the Dublin Airport again. That was my limit - the letter from my doctor with the "she's got blown back discs" in hand not withstanding.... :roll:
How infuriating! But just think - I don't think it's necessarily Dublin airport that is to blame. It's more the new regime of terror mongering, cover-your-ass, "make-work" security measures that is to blame. I dread having to fly anywhere in the future, because of all the horror stories that I am hearing about airports and their damned security measures. :x
Hartz - busy is better than bored? (I tell myself that often, but it never quite rings true.) Honestly, we've flown quite a bit. "Terror" or not, we've had no problems ever. EXCEPT at the Dublin Airport. Heathrow, the busiest airport in Europe (I think) isn't nearly the horror that the Dublin Airport has been.... I think there's a "Nan Filter" on the whole country, like back in the day when I'd try to read things off of Irish websites and the links would never work or be obsolete. It's just the country, I think, that's not on the same plane (double-entendre not intended) as you or I..... :roll:
I don't think I'll be going back there if I can avoid it.
I think I can relate about Dublin. Except in my case, it's a town right next to the one I live in. I have 2 siblings that live there. The very first time I came to visit my sister (I lived in the Northeast US at the time, and now I live in Florida) I was treated to the most rude behavior I ever encountered anywhere. A bus driver told me and my daughter flat out that we couldn't board the bus with all our luggage. I asked him how I was to reach my destination if we weren't allowed to board. He said take a taxi! I asked he he were wiling to pay for a taxi? He turned his back and started talking to another driver. My daughter and I got on the bus while he had his back turned, and I payed the fares. Then he had no right to make us disembark. There were other incidents, but I was amazed at the difference between the two cities. And, each time I have traveled there, there have been other puzzling or downright inconvenient incidents. It seemed to only happen in that city, not the one I lived in.
It seems lately I am forgetting a lot of stuff. This frightens me beyond any reason.
I am afraid of being perceived as stupid.
I am afraid of being pitied.
I am afraid of being made fun of.
I am afraid of loosing all cognitive function.
I am afraid of not being able to make decisions.
I am afraid of not being able to work.
I am afraid to be needy of help.
What is the point of living if you can't remember it?
I'm sorry, but "X" seems to have been removed from the alphabet. If anyone know where it has got to, would they please email its whereabouts to [email protected] giving full details of its longitude, latitude, altitude and time period. A reward of $0.00 pounds sterling is available for redistribution to the masses of chocolate-flavoured, rock-salt models of Elvis Presley.
(I seem to have lost the thread, a little.)
