ya do what ya gotta do. i'm looking forward to, someday, living somewhere with nice, deep, rich fertile soil and not quite so many creatures who want to eat anything i plant in it.

but with all this, and with cages all around the tops, things grow. unfortunately mine are dwarf everything. we checked on the sunflowers this evening. the ones that are supposed to grow to 8 to 10ft tall. nada, they are blooming now at 3 ft and 5 feet.

i'll definitely have to add a bunch of amendments to the soil. i believe i'll buy them at the garden center, though, rather than at the race track.

Kids these days are something else......

I dunno - the free-range ones may be leaner, but they're so hard to clean...

yea! i've been looking for onion seedlings for weeks and finally found some. we don't live in our old place anymore, we are very near the coast, so the seasons are a little behind. our hottest weather won't come until september and october. so there's plenty of time to plant "warm season" and "just before warm season" plants. but we can't find 'em in the stores....

ah. well.

no baby birds yet. the mom is still sitting on the nest, and occasionally goes for some birdseed we set out for her. should be any day now.

and we have baby birds, two so far, plus one egg. each is smaller than a M&M peanut candy, with a little fuzz of black on them. if we bump the shelf when mom is away the little heads pop up with mouths open.
