When the Holy Spirit moves through you, sometimes you will speak in a language that you do not know. There are many reasons that this happens. One reason for it to happen is when you are baptized in the Holy Spirit. Speaking in tongues is evidence of that. It is amazing.

I do it, but usually when I am alone, in the quiet, during prayer. Sometimes it happens at night and I wake up praying in tongues.

I used to go to a pentacostal church as well, I was even baptized. I liked the happy songs. But never understood about the hands raising, that part put me off so I ignored it. I had the illusion to feel God as well, I miss that. I had trouble with the noise, the emotionality and chaos of the services. They had a problem with my Gender Identity Disorder past, my AS was not discovered then. Also fitting into a group is too much to ask of me, although groups of Christians are better to handle than other groups.

Not all Pentecostal churches are like that. My church is very accepting.

I don't raise my hands. For one, I can feel them when I raise them and it distracts me. For another, my spiritual experience doesn't happen in my physical body, it happens in my spirit. Maybe it is different for NTs?

The noise and activity gets to me and makes me uncomfortable, distracted and sometimes upset.

I go to church, the people talk to me (and some even like me I think but I can't tell for certain) but as for being part of a group, that doesn't really work for me. I am not social. I do talk to some of the people, though. Several of the ladies at church work with autistic children, so they understand a little better. That helps.

Funny.. This 'speaking in tongues thing'. I have never heard of it before. Hm.

Anyway, question time: What point do you guys see in praying? I've never really understood it, despite my confirmation and all that.

If you read in your Bible about the Day of Pentecost, it talks about speaking in tongues.

Acts 2:38 is a good place to start (about salvation and speaking in tongues).

Some people refer to it as "praying in the spirit." Maybe that is more familiar although they are not necessarily the same usually.

You can also read about it here:
1 Corinthians 14:4-17 (1 Corinthians 14:14 specifically talks about speaking in tongues.
Acts 2:6-8

Prayer is a communion with God, a conversation. It is a time to praise and worship Him, to repent, to intercede on others' behalf, to ask for supplication.

It helps me focus and stay calmer than I am naturally.

I raise my hands as a matter of obedience and to help contribute to the worship atmosphere.

Lelia, is it uncomfortable for you? I mean physically uncomfortable? When I try to do that, I can feel my hands and it bothers me. It is distracting.

Can you please tell me how you get past this? I have tried but it is so physically uncomfortable!

I have many of my own vices and what helps me is doing things that mean a lot, being within the real world, I would rather be on a mountain top, in the ocean, or up in my local hills I find so much more energizing as being a spectrum wise individual not so good around lots of people, I also find inspiration from painting, writing doing the things that give me the greatest pleasure from life, my children also of course and sharing with like minded individuals

And you do that really well. I have enjoyed so much the sharing that you encourage on your FaceBook profile. It is fantastic.

Right before I got diagnosed, I became a Christian. Life sucked before Jesus, and that's the understatement of the century. I got filled with the Spirit this past summer and it really refreshes my soul.

Erm......you quoted the wrong person. I don't even have a FaceBook profile for one thing.

fotojunkie: when my arms get tired, I lower them. There is no initial physical discomfort. My main problem is trying to clap on the off beat as they do in my church (black music pastor) so I usually give up and and just clasp my hands over my heart.
I used to get amusement from watching the one guy in church worse than me at clapping. Oh, how I miss him and going to home groups with him. I think now that he might have had Asperger's. Certainly some of his sons do.
Dancing is totally beyond me. I have no proprioreceptive memory and am generally a klutz, so swaying while hanging onto a chair for balance is as far as I can go.
If something distracts from actual worship, it doesn't matter how many others in the congregation do it, you ought not to. God accepts us where we are.

I'm a christian and I love God. But I don't go to church so I can't really answer those questions, but I thought I'd say hi anyway. :)

I prayed, for the first time, last night for my friend, and I think I saw the figure of a cross.
