If Aspies united we could rule the world. We could rebuild the Earth in our own eyes. MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA  sorry.

I'm not an aspie but on the other hand, I get quite well along with non NT's in general... Now (and don't take this bad pls, rather as a gently pun) Don't you folk think that once you are united and so on, the world will turn better? Or would it rather be an "endless" stream of thoughts and ideas, and debating on it? ---> consequence of wanting to finetune everything in the slightest details. So a world governed by aspies, why not? I am not against, on condition that things would advance. Imagine wanting a simple service, now by the time the "aspie-hierarchie" decided if that service is justified or not, the request could be deprecated even before decision is made... or maybe this is just my linear view on aspie... :/ and if the world is run by aspies... what would happen with NT's? would we be put in a minority role? would the aspie fall in the vicious circle of vengeance? or would they overcome that and forgive? Which in the end makes me doubt if the world would be a better place?... wouldn't it be just better to just try to enhance present situation for ALL of us, instead of "branding" each others "neuro-type"? this might seem like a "noob" question, but by just trying (admitted with a lot of patience) explain to other Neuro-types what autism and asperger is all about, wouldn't that be a good start already? (after all world dominance is useless since the world is just éphémère) :)
Cordially, MDK

As harsh as this may sound, I believe that given human nature an "aspie world government" could result in some sort of suppression of NTs, well, or at least in neglecting their needs. The coin might flip, so to say, and the NTs would demand "integration", a bit like it is the case with autistic people. Of course that is not a rule, more of what I consider would be likely (especially if one thinks about the fact that many seem to have made some rather uncomfortable experiences with NTs).

On the other hand, if the choice of people, who shall decide, is done right then it might very well result in a good balancing of awareness and integration for autistic people and pretty much no changes for the neurotypicals.

But yes, MDK is generally right, making the population sensitive is an important step, which has already started decades ago and it seems to work out more and more as the awareness for autism is in fact increasing (just by looking at media it is clearly visible).

Movies (of course there are some bad examples), documentaries about the autistic spectrum and series featuring autistic characters contribute a lot to that - even if they feature the most common traits/stereotypes yet. Some more diversity might be useful there to remove the weighting of the common image of the stereotypical autist and make clear that it is a spectrum that can show in many different ways, that there is no clear border between a NT and an autist but that this is rather a blurred field.
I like to imagine it the way one colour blends into the other when painting with watercolours, at both ends there is a clean colour, but anything in between is just blurry and fades into each other.

There is a saying, often quoted on these forums, that goes like this:
If you have met one autist, you know exactly one autist.

It just stresses the individual symptoms per person which I think might need a slightly bigger attention in autism awareness campaigns.

Also, talking about uniting aspies:
I think Wrong Planet was already a major step in this - the fact that it exists and features so many members helping each other can be considered a gem on the internet.
I'm not sure if everyone felt this way about Wrong Planet, but when I found out about the existence of those forums, I was really happy as I finally found a place with people I can relate to (which is not related to any of my special interests). We are a community already, maybe someday things will evolve into a bigger scale, but only time will tell. In any case, I'm sure that quite a lot of what is being posted on these forums every day are of help to many people who are suspected to be autistic or officially diagnosed as such and even to people who aren't autistic but just want to learn about us to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts. :)

Oh and:
Must... suppress... world domination drive... :x

Just a small joke. :)

The best place to find adult meetings in the NY/NJ area is GRASP (www.grasp.org), if you are really interested.
