I'm an English professor at a community college (I've been there 27 years).

I'm also the divisional tech geek. If any of my colleagues have a problem with their computer, they come knocking at my office.

I've always loved radio, right from childhood to now as a 57 year old. I think it combines my love of tech stuff with my love of music.

I did college radio (an on-the-air station, not just a campus carrier) and loved it. Along with theater, I believe that it was a major factor in my learning to deal with other people. It was the first place in my life where, with perhaps two exceptions, I made any real friends.

Litguy,

You are so right! Radio has very much been the vehicle in my journey to better personal interaction.

Weird thing is that when I am on the air or doing a voice-over, I tend to nod my head in kind of a jerky motion, sometimes. It's like I have to muster so much focus to get the words out in the right way, that my physical appearance can be kind of goofy.

Doing a radio show is much like being locked in a closet and talking to oneself, but all the while visualizing a conversation with one other person at the other end of the speaker.

Communication issues are common in AS, but radio to me is like what I THINK interpersonal communication SHOULD be (not always as it realliy is).

I know this is way off-topic but OP: is that Chris Skelton from Life on Mars? I love that show - it's back on in a week or two. I saw the new trailer and laughed my head off even though I didn't get the reference!

It sure is! :-) I haven't seen the trailer, which suggests that I need to watch more TV! Life on Mars is possibly my favourite TV show of all time. I think I shall see if the trailer is on-line (so much for getting this essay finished! Damn my wandering mind!). Chris was my favourite character because he was all innocent and dumb. :-) My family also got ridiculously excited during the last episode when it showed Woodbank Community Centre, which is quite near to where we live. Note the word quite. I also noticed that the modern bus stop was in shot. I went to uni all excited to tell everyone and they looked at me like I was the biggest loser in the world. :D

MrMark - I have a very romanticized view of working in a library. Unfortunately the libraries near me are tiny, rubbish and run by control freak pensioners. I have an unhealthy love of filing things and making lists of things so perhaps if I get bored of teaching (hopefully not for a while since I haven't even passed yet) I should think about working in a library.

MrSinister - yes, leave now. :-) I did work experience in an office for 2 weeks and every day I felt a little bit of my soul being ripped from inside me. Is it the people or the work itself that do the most damage?

I am an architect. After years of lousy jobs, I finally realized that a talent and developed skill I had all along was of value.
I am business licensed but not AIA: too anarchistic. Sir christopher Wren wasn't AIA either. If you design buildings, they get built and they stay up, you are an an architect, and so i am.

Avocationally, RF flows through my veins. Radio for hours per day. Now that FCC is dropping the code necessity (I am far too clumsy), I may go for a general tag.

It's on the BBC website. There are also some wallpapers on there.

You live in the Manchester area then?

My favourite character is this guy:

I'm a head technician at a university. Unfortunately it means I manage some staff, which I find extremely difficult - I just don't understand them and what makes them tick. There are a lot of people who you have to interact with, which is also hard. However, even my NT colleagues say working at a university would be great if it wasn't for the people!

TG:
Nah, mostly i design good old practical stud frame and concrete block. Easy to get past code, and easy to get inspected, easy to get financed. People like 'em. Know what? If I was doing a new house for me I'd do it really standard too.

thanx for asking!
