Interesting thing, the Sudbury School(s) idea. I think I'd heard of them before. They do seem to have been fairly successful in academic terms, but I guess not that successful in terms of taking over the world. Forty years at one school per year...

The Port Isaac Open Learning (actually, I quite like the idea of an open Leaning Centre... a place where you can lean any way you like) Centre... did eventually happen. The original idea was essentially a single room full of computers, uses by the school during the day, and open for anyone outside of school hours. There would also have been courses run. The funding we were after at the time didn't happen. It then took rather a long while (I think about 3 years) to get alternative funding and I really wasn't involved. They eventually got a much more expensive load of computer kit, through a thoroughly commercial (Microsoft only) setup. The "centre" then didn't really open at all - the school used it and that was pretty much it. I don't know how it's doing now (I moved away 6 years back).

I really should update my website. :)

Hah! Took me forty years in the school of life! Flunked many social subjects...

Not for everyone. My partner told me of a story that depicted an obsessed kid who was only interested in one subject: “Fly fishing" of all things, attending a Sudbury school.

By learning all the aspects of this subject required him to methodically investigate. By reading, math, writing. (the three “R’s”) sort of learned as he went. Educators at a Sudbury allowed him to pursue his subject in anyway the student wanted.

Postscript was: The student is now independently wealthy. Eventually got into writing computer software and sold it off to a conglomerate. So my bride says... I need to investigate further. (Can I go back to School?....wishful thinking) got kids to get through it first....

Here’s the article if you are interested. Perhaps the topic of another Thread...
