Hi Mark,

AIM = AOL instant messenger.
You would need to sign up with AOL for one if you wanted an AIM screen name as with YIM.
You don't need one (unless you want one ) Yes, its free.
There is no guarantee these days that you won't get 'spimmed'.
The reason for this thread appears to be to see if anyone wants to chat on AIM. If you aren't comfortable giving out some information on a publicly accessible thread, don't - your caution is wise. While most here are pretty friendly, it is searchable by Google hence you may leave yourself open to being contacted by others/spim messages.

Actually, no need to sign up for the full-blown $whatever.99-a-month AOL if you only want AIM. It's a separate program from AOL and it's free. I know people on Yahoo and AIM, but Yahoo seems to be more popular with my small crowd.

I'm generally open to IM, but I don't like making the first contact or adding to peolpe's buddy lists without asking them by e-mail first. As in Yahoo, AOL gives you plenty of settings to adjust so nobody can get to you unless you really want them to.

As far as personal info, you can put as much or as little as you want in either IM profile. Or not have a profile at all, which was my choice when I signed up. That'll cut down on spimmers.

I've heard of a program where you can can integrate all your chat programs, but I don't know anything about it.
