I'm glad the assessment went well. I'd say congratulations, buts that sounds a bit odd to congratulate you on something that has caused a lot of suffering and misunderstanding. Now you know "officially" what you suspected for a while.

I was diagnosed ASD at 47 in April 2019 and I had no idea I was on the spectrum until the doctor said so and then the doctor had to convince me. But I'm glad they did. It has brought a lot of understanding It has made a lot of difference to me to know I'm different and OK as I am and not just a freak or a "spaz" as I was called at school.

I hope it starts a journey towards some understanding and acceptance.

You can congratulate me. I feel proud of being on the spectrum. It has been nothing but positive for me to be "labelled" as ASD as opposed to my previous BPD label which stigmatized me for years. No-one goes around being proud of being mentally ill but I am proud of being neurologically diverse

You know that in the UK we are now protected by the autism act 2009 and the disability act 2010. You should not only NOT be discriminated against but you should be protected and reasonable adjustments should be put in place for you at work and /or education and public services like the doctors so rather than be scared embrace it and be reassured that if someone tried to use it against you they can get in deep s***
I was taught never discuss mental health issues with a doctor. Never mention it etc... The reason for this is that in Britain, in the past they would lock people away who actually had very minor conditions. I know a family friend who had been locked away for a short while when he became a Christian. There was such a change in his life... His wife and father in law couldn't understand it and called the athorities who took him off... During his time there he said he met with some of the most brilliant minded and intelligent people who ad simply had a mental breakdown... They had been solicitors or bank managers etc. After a perion of a month or three, they found nothing wrong with him and he was released with a certificate declaring him to be completely sane. He says "How many people do you know have a certificate like that?"

So for me to have actually asked one of my Doctors for an assessment is a giant leap.

Congratulations, CerealKiller!

I was assessed in April, 2018 and it still feels exciting to hold that new key. It reminds me of Dorothy opening the door into colour, after living in black and white. The whole world changes when you learn who you are!

Had the same. You need to wait to check that it does not say that someone has answered first... As sometimes I move onto a new subject and it does not put my reply on because I have not noticed this.

I´m sorry it took me a couple of days to come back to answer you!

So my doctor told me I have ASD, and he said that in about 10 to 15 days from my assessment day he would send me a whole report with my ASD diagnosis and any other diagnosis he has given me (he mentioned something else but i was so nervous it did not stick with me). He also said that he would send me links to resources and contact links and numbers to therapist, both private and public. He said even though ASD is not curable I could personally benefit from skills and tools in anxiety management and social interactions.

I have told my university (open university) about my ASD diagnosis and they have created a care plan for me to have in place to help me success in my degree (ie allowing me to do online tutorial instead of face to face if I so prefer).
