The diet only works for people who have a problem with the enzyme that digests the wheat & dairy proteins. If the enzyme isn't digesting wheat & dairy, you get symptoms similar to opiates. One symptom very specific to opiates that occurs in some people with ASDs is a reduced sensitivity to pain. I've been very insensitive to pain as long as I can remember. In high school, some kid punched me in my arm a bunch of times till I got a big bruise and I barely felt anything. He punched me alot and when I moved he thanked me for being his punching bag. After 2 weeks on the diet, I punched myself in the arm and it hurt 20x as much as it ever did before. I didn't realize just how insensitive I was to pain until I was on the diet.
