How do you hold a pen/pencil?

neongrl, I hold my pens/pencils exactly like you do! Like other people with similar grips have mentioned, I too have a dent on my middle finger where the pen/pencil rests. The sad thing is the way I do it now (like the way you do it) is the corrected version of my grip. When I was in second grade, my teacher made me write with one of those rubber triangle things because my grip was really bad. Instead of holding just my index finger against the pen/pencil, I held both my index finger and middle finger against it (basically two fingers instead of one). Nobody has bothered to say anything about the way I hold it now because my handwriting is pretty neat.

I must do it wrong because Ive got a bump on my finger.

Depends which finger is the one on which you have a bump. If it's your middle finger then that's normal. Some people have bigger bumps than others, but it'll go if you stop writing for a very long time. Apparently - I've not had the opportunity to find out yet!

An assistant teacher from my elementary school told me that I squeeze a writing utensil too tightly and too close to the bottom tip. I still do. When I try to hold it the "correct" way, my handwriting is just crap.

I'm left handed, and like many lefties my writing style is odd. I have small handwriting and write with with the pen facing me, my left arm in front and curled towards me. I noticed many right handed people tilt the paper or whatever they're writing on. I guess when I was learning to write it just made sense to have the paper completely straight.

I never heard of anyone getting bumps on their finger.

I basically make a fist (with my thumb held flat) with the pen stuck between my middle and index fingers. I've been told that it's painful to watch me write. It could be because I'm left-handed, at least it doesn't help.

I had to pick up a writing implement and write a little bit to answer this one.

Left handed, I just have 3 fingers on the pen or pencil and my middle finger and thumb on the bottom of the pen, pointing finger on the top of the pen - then they all join about a fixed point about an inch above the tip. Point of note, when writing left handed I do not curl my hand around like many of my left handed friends do, but hold it straight on.

Right handed I hold the device in a similar fashion, having 3 fingers on the pen or pencil and my middle finger on the bottom of the pen pointing towards my center however the pen or pencil rests on the actual joint of my middle finger instead of alongside the nail. My pointing finger lays on the away from me side of the pen and thumb on the closest to me side.

Hehe... That grip does look like a monkey holding a stick I can understand the name monkey grip.

I hold a pen with the tips of the first two fingers and the tip of my thumb.... I think this is how most people hold a pen. Just feels right.

I dont remeber a lot about it but i had a special leather thingy they'd put on my hand to keep me from breaking the penicls and the triangle things came later my writing was so bad they thried to teach me to type in the third or fouth grade and this was in the 70s manual typewriter and all. My writing is still very bad I'm not sure of the write way to hold one I use many and go though phases index finger and thumb only to all my fingers. Banks hate me never a cosistant signature.

I hold it left handed and any of my friends tell me that I pretty much have that handwriting of a 6 yearold.

That sounds similar to how I hold a pen left-handed. My writing left-handed is th same size as my right-handed writing, just a tad sloppier, since I write mostly with my right. I anchor my hand by laying the side on hand of paper, rest thepen on my middle finger, and move it with my index and thumb. The pen is usually at a 60-65 degree angle and the non-writing end of the pen is pointed away from me.

Right-handed, I again rest the side of the hand on the paper, and then rest the pen on thering finger, and move it with my index, middle and thumb. The pen is at a 45-50 degree angle and end of the pen if pointing back and to the right, just past my right shoulder.

My handwriting is passable, Some people think it's good. I don't think it's good at all. Sometimes it's quite bad and I can't read it myself. I have a mixture of print and cursive - it's hard for me to write consistantly in either style. My handwriting looks non-gender specific too.

I hold my pen like that too!! I go to university and I developed extreme arm pain and neck pain due to my tight grip while writing and weird posture in my struggle to write nicely. (I write way too much because that's the only way I can remember things... it sucks!)
