Yeah, for an ASD, the diagnosis isn't determined by the individual symptoms but the symptoms all together.

The entire symptom picture makes for a diagnosis. Confusing, yes. Very.

:D Hi and welcome, You need to read a lot from this site and it makes for fascinating reading.
I always thought my daughter was normal, an NT no nastiness intended, I've learnt a lot from this site, it's us NTs that are not normal. If you met her you would think she was an NT, untill you notice

1 lack of eye contact

2 very sensitive to sound ( which we always thought was to do with a leaky filter in her ears.)
But aspergers just makes it worse.

3 lack of tact

4 she prefers older people for company then her own age ( till she got herself a boyfriend)

5 plucking her eyebrows, stimming, in her pocket she has a lolly stick, for stimming.

6 little facial expressions

7 little body language

8 obsessive over grammer and other things. (read all the library books on dog behaviour).

9 prefers night time and darkness, (which I learnt today some other aspies seem to prefer.)

10 very intelligent, above other people her age. (well above me.)

11 logical in everything

12 she isn't able to understand verbal instruction, or things read to her very well. She has to read it herself. or have visual aids.

This is just some, hope this helps some. Just read the forums you may recognise your self in some of them, remember as someone mentioned Nts show some of these much to a lesser degree. For instance I play with my wedding ring when under stress. :?

Wow, I didn't know that! That certainly applies to me :)

I'm a lot more social and energetic at night, didn't know it was an AS thing.

No matter how hard I try my sleep schedule seems to drift and settle at a point where I go to bed around 4am or 5am and sleep until mid-afternoon. Even if I force myself to sleep "normal" hours I find that my brain doesn't seem to really "rev up" until late afternoon, with my energy peak occuring mid-evening.

I'm new here and I am also not sure whether I have AS or I'm just being paranoid. I've always known myself to be very shy and awkward in social situations. I frequently don't know what to say to people, even ones I've known for a long time, I just don't know how what I say will be reacted to. For this reason I rarely ever initiate conversations. A few months ago I realized that I rarely ever make eye contact when I talk to people and I will fidget with any nearby object when nervous. When my watch was broken I noticed that I would reach to my wrist to fiddle with the watch that wasn't there. I find crowded places and social situations uncomfortable. I don't seem to have really bad sensory sensitivity, but I don't like to be touched by people I don't feel close to. It's not that I don't want to have a social life but I just seem to be exceedingly bad at it. I don't think I've ever been obsessive about something for any long period of time. Except finding music to listen to. I've always done relatively well in school but I tend to do way better in math/science/history classes than english or humanities classes. When I stumbled across information about asperger's on the net it seemed to fit pretty well and I can empathise with a lot of the posts on this site but a lot of those things I just always attributed to being a very geeky person.

Anyway, I don't know if I'm barking up the wrong tree here but I guess it wouldn't hurt to investigate it a little further.

Wow, this post contains a lot of "I"s, hope that's not too annoying.

Oh, and another reason I may not be autistic is that I've always had a keen sense of irony.

Hi; welcome. You'll probably find this site useful, somehow or other; just keep looking through the posts. But I think AS is rather tricky to self-diagnose - I don't know how long I've been here (lost track of time) but I'm still not sure. It would explain a lot of things for me, but a lot about doesn't fit ... still, I hope you enjoy being here nonetheless! Personally I found it quite ... well, scary, the number of posts to which I could relate, but then it was good to find people who had a lot in common, when nobody I've met has ever really been much like me. So yes, I do hope you enjoy yourself here :) (Lol and I have been called a hypochondriac before, so read into that what you will ... )
