Questions about you

What is your first name? B.J. (my screen name is real creative, huh?)
Age: 29 (I will turn 30 in March)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina (Leland, which is across the river in Brunswick County, to be exact); will be Poughkeepsie, New York after the new year.
Hobbies and Interests: Politics (I am a proud left-wing, progressive Democrat), History/Geography, Food, Television/Film, Computers/Technology, Sports (watching, not playing)
Why are you here? Because I finally feel like there are people like me.
When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): Not formally diagnosed, but there's no way I am not HFA/AS; a diagnosis would be a mere formality for something both my family and I have long suspected. I had a speech delay (until the age of four), so the formal diagnosis would probably be HFA; apparently I was thought to be mentally ret*d at that age (I guess they didn't know much about autism/AS where I'm from at that time). I do have a niece who was recently diagnosed.
Favorite subjects: see above; I also loved science in school (and still do; my lack of interest in math is probably why wasn't as much of an interest as Social Studies).
Education: BA in Political Science (naturally), University of North Carolina (class of 2005; took me a while to finish); will start at the Culinary Institute of America in January (to be either a chef or a food writer/critic).
Favorite music: Off the wall...I have a little bit of everything on my iPod. Johnny Cash is my favorite artist of all time; if there is a God (my opinion on the matter is no, by the way), he should have Johnny Cash's voice. Don't read into that too much and think that country music is my favorite genre, though.
Books: Mostly non-fiction; mostly history or political books. When I was a kid, I would always check out the books with the most pictures (you know...coffee table books); I would also do weird things like read the phone book whenever we got a new one (I still do and don't know why; I hate telephones). I do read fiction occasionally; I like George Orwell's books and The Catcher In The Rye, for instance.
Television: The Simpsons (be leery of anyone under 40 who doesn't like them), Monty Python's Flying Circus, Red Dwarf, Are You Being Served? (if it's a British comedy shown on PBS, chances are I'm a fan), Family Guy, Futurama, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, The Rachel Maddow Show, Mystery Science Theatre 3000, Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs, Good Eats and many more that I can't name at the moment. If it is on PBS, The History Channel or The Discovery Channel (and its family of networks); I would probably enjoy it. Some may say I watch too much television, but there is no such thing.
Film: I'm a snob; generally my tastes trend towards the foreign, the independent, the pretentious. Ingmar Bergman and Akira Kurosawa are my favorite directors, and I feel that the 1970s were the best decade for American film. I also love documentaries, especially about (you guessed it) history or politics. Most Hollywood movies hold no interest with me. However, my favorite movie of all time remains The Rocky Horror Picture Show; I have never dressed up and gone to a live show, but I can practically recite the entire movie from memory.
Instrument: Nobody plays an electron microscope like me...seriously, I own a guitar and keyboard and would love to be able to play either one some day.
Do you like sports? You better believe it. UNC's my alma mater, so I am a huge Tar Heels fan (I'm watching them play football as I type). I tend to stick to home when it comes to pro sports; I root for the Carolina Panthers in the NFL, the Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL and the Charlotte Bobcats in the NBA (and a former fan of the Charlotte Hornets). Since we have no major league baseball team here in North Carolina, I root for the Chicago Cubs; I watched them all the time on WGN as a kid...and I am a masochist.
Family: I have three sisters: two are older (42 and 41) and one is younger (26). They, and my mother, all live nearby; my dad passed away two years ago. My two older sister each have two kids; I have three nephews (14, 12 and and the aforementioned Aspie niece (6). Large extended family: my father's side lives mostly around here (even though they are all from eastern Kentucky); my mother's side (also from KY) live in Ohio, Illinois, California, Arizona, Texas, Kentucky and Japan (my cousin in the Navy). I also have a cat named Wellstone; he's a five-year old orange tabby and was born feral.
Clothing: Jeans, T-shirts (usually some shade of gray) and either sneakers (including a pair of Chucks) or sandals mostly; I do own a couple of suits and a fedora for formal occasions.
How did you find this website? As I have said, I have suspected that I have HFA or AS for a while; I stumbled on the site while doing some internet research. Being on this forum has pretty much confirmed this for me.
Job: I am presently on the dole, but I will be a full-time student again starting in January.
Plans for the future? As I mentioned, I will be studying to be either a chef or a food writer/critic. I think I would be a better food writer than a chef, but either career would be rewarding.
Any comments? What can I say? I love this site.

Do you like sports?
Hell no, when it comes to fast, competitive ones, but rock climbing rocks! It's so technical and mental! Also it teaches planning, goal setting, and self confidence!
Family:
(kinda)Neurotypical husband, 12yo aspie son, 3 yr old probably Neurotypical daughter. And our boxer, Sadie
Clothing:
This is funny, I have always had this way of using fashion to show my personality, I used to totally disregard trends unless they fit my personality. This led me to go to school for fashion for 2 years, I was a very Avant guard(sp) designer, but I quit that school. Back then I had pink hair. Nowadays I try to combine my style with trends because I've learned how important it is as a form of non-verbal language. I was obsessed with the show "what not to wear" for a whole year! Fit is very important to me from what I learned in school.
How did you find this website?

How did you find this website? Local autism support organization
Job: Currently P/T at a local College's Kitchen/Convenience store

Any comments? My mother has said i had autistic tendencies for years, but we had only just heard of Autism being in a spectrum for almost a year now. Had an uncle that we know was in the category, but due to lack of information, he never got the help he needed prior to dying. I pretty much figured out a family mystery.
What is your first name? Ossi
Age: 29
Location: Kuopio, Finland
Hobbies and Interests:
Comics (more drawing and writing than reading but a bit of that too) cinema, listening music (avant-garde, metal, folk, world music, bollywood, almost anything that hits me and its more likely to hit more peculiar combination of different genres it is) thinking about certain areas of politics especially related to copyrights (or more distributors rights) and freedom of speech. Semiotics (this also related to my profession so it's not just about job.) Art in general and of course, travelling and cooking. I love cheese and seafood. Pulpo a la Galega, delicious!
I definitely forgot something but can't help it. Perhaps I'll telll more by some other time.
Why are you here?
I have participated Finnish equivalent some time before and as some people mentioned this forum there some time ago, I started to think if I would join here as well. Well, now I finally did. After all this is easy and non-stressing way to communicate with people from all over the world. Perhaps I will learn something by reading and writing here. At least I hope so.
TV shows/Movies:
Babylon 5 is the most important for me. Also because I was quite young at the time I watched, but also because it reflected my life very much. I started seniour high school when Finnish TV2 started to run it and it ended exactly at the time of my matriculation exams. For others, Prisoner has inspired me a lot both philosophically and visually. It is magnificent piece of art. The new Battlestar Galactica and yes, even Farscape touched me a lot.
Lost was great for the first two seasons after that it started to feel awkward and stupid. Now it feels okay at best. Fringe seems promising even though it feels also pretty contradictional. Some stuff is absolutely great, some details and flaws annoy me as hell.
Instrument:
A doorbell. Haven't played it for a long time. My skills have probably rusted.
Clothing:
Black pants, suit and hat, two latter are heritage from my grand-father. Used them on the 60's. Mostly all other suits and clothes are either self made (my big-sister likes to do clothes) or bought from second hand shops. Anyways, when walking on public I often have everything black except a tie which is often white with pirate skulls or have some other decoration such as Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse. They're from a second hand shop as well.
There's story about the black hat. When I was a kid on scholl, about 7 or 8 years old, there were a meeting for students parents with the teacher. On the walls of our classroom were Eastern bunnies carved with cardboard and my mother ask from my teacher "where is Ossi's bunny". Teacher was a bit grumpy and told that "Ossi didn't make a bunny, instead he draw a man with a black hat". That picture was not on the wall.
After my grandfather died, just after his funeral my mother found his clothes that didn't fit to anyone else, but I was the same size. The hat was among them and when I first tried it front of a mirror my mother said "it seems that it was you who you drew". Since then, I started to wear the hat.
How did you find this website?
Heard from it from the Finnish equivalent.
Job: Graphic designer and or / illusionist, some sort of artist.
Plans for the future?
To see if I can create that kind of career where I can do all the things I do right now and earn my living from it without making too many compromises.
