Welcome Silvers!

We have some things in common. I am also a 45 year old mom of two children. I came to the board because my younger child has PDD-NOS.

Please look around and make yourself comfortable.

What is your first name? Liz

Age: 18

Location: Purgatory (a.k.a. Florida)

Hobbies and Interests: Writing, Anime, Video Games, J-rock

Why are you here? I have AS and OCD

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): Age 16, 2003

Favorite subjects: Humanities, Theater, Psychology, English

Year/Grade: N/A (I graduated High Shool last year and after Dual Enrolling at the college for three years while in HS I sorta got burnt out and haven't gone back yet. I'm planning my return in the spring.)

Favorite music: Acoustic Guitar, Anything Piano, Classical, J-rock, J-pop, Anime or Game soundtracks

Books: The Elric Saga, Dragon Sword and Wind Child, Harry Potter, The Feast of the Trickster

TV shows/Movies: Concerning tv shows Survivor (I'm a shameless addict), Law & Order, South Park, and sometimes anime that's on tv even if it IS horribly butchered since I can't afford to buy anime all the time (That stuff's expensive dangit!).. As for movies: Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Dogma, Something the Lord Made, Ladyhawke, Bladerunner, What Dreams May Come, Spring and Chaos

Instrument: I am learning the Alto Sax and Violin

Do you like sports? Nope, not at all. I can neither play them or watch them since I'm horrible at playing and watching them bores me to death. Unless it's playing a game of Blitzball on FFX. Blitzball is the only game I can tolerate to play or watch.

Family: A mom who also is diagnosed with AS

Clothing: I've got a weird sense of style. Most of the time I just wear t-shirts and jeans but occasionally I get in a renaissance-y victorian-y mode and then I start dressing up in my weird clothes.

How did you find this website? I blundered across it.

Job: None currently, though I want one at the local video game store.

Plans for the future? I would like to be an author, but I really in a way don't know what I want to do..

Any comments? Nope!

What is your first name? Anne

Age: 26

Location: California

Hobbies and Interests: Science, psychology, cryonics, Star Wars, reading.

Why are you here? It is fairly obvious to me now that I've been an Aspie my whole life but did not figure it out until recently.

When were you diagnosed? Self-diagnosed this month. Seeking formal AS diagnosis for my own peace of mind. Diagnosed, at various times in my life, with ADHD, dysthymia, social anxiety, and nonspecific nonverbal learning disabilities. I'm 99% certain that these diagnoses were haphazardly applied and my underlying issue is really AS. And I'm more than okay with that.

Favorite subjects: Electromagnetic fields and waves.

Year/Grade: I have a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.

Favorite music: Anything that makes me feel shivery.

Books: Too many to list! Though I must mention Harry Potter...

TV shows/Movies: Star Trek / Star Wars / Stargate SG-1 (I'm sensing a trend here...)

Instrument: Some guitar.

Do you like sports? If so, which ones?: Ugh, no. I have terrible motor skills.

Family: I live with my (NT but geeky-introverted) boyfriend. I have 1 (quirky) father, 1 stepmother, 1 biological brother (quirky-NT), 1 biological sister (scary-normal), 1 stepbrother, and 1 stepsister. My biological mother is deceased.

Clothing: Lots of comfy things. Lots of black things.

How did you find this website? Googling!

Job: Analog engineer specializing in the minimization of electromagnetic interference.

Plans for the future? To live forever. Possibly to become a cyborg. To observe, learn, and understand as much as I possibly can about the Universe.

Any comments? I've been lurking for a while here, and I like it. I'm devouring info about AS at the moment. It's nice to have discovered my "people", so to speak. :)

Hobbies and Interests: Photography, music, cooking/foodie-ism, urban exploration, reading (and sometimes writing)

Why are you here? I've been diagnosed with and treated for various disorders throughout the years, but Asperger's seems to come the closest to what's actually "wrong" with me. My half-brother (mom's kid) was diagnosed as autistic as a child, and my father (a programmer/systems analyst) could come straight out of High-Functioning Autism central casting.

I was always a loner, more asocial than antisocial. In school I would get in trouble for wanting to stay behind and read instead of participating in sports (group athletics were and are a tremendous source of anxiety for me; I prefer walking, weight training, yoga, freestyle swimming, etc). At the same time, I was hard to control -- more interested in what was going on in my own mind than whatever activity was going on in the classroom, and when I did pay attention, I thought the lessons were boring and my teachers were stupid. So I'd get in trouble because I didn't know that calling the teachers out on their mistakes/wrongheadedness was a social no-no. (I'm slowly getting the hang of this in adult life too, although all too often my idealism wins out.)

I've had problems as an adult, in finding and keeping jobs, in putting my obsessions aside long enough to prioritize the important things (and I know what I have to do, I just get tunnel-visioned and lose track of time), in being a "team player" when what I really want is to work on my own, in multitasking when what I really want is one engaging project I can throw myself into. I've had to quit jobs because I felt uncomfortable on the phone (what's wrong with e-mail?), and I hated having to knock on co-workers' office doors if I had a question. I guess I just didn't want anyone to pay attention to me, because I didn't want them to figure out that I was weird. I wanted to pass as normal, to fake it, but as they say in the movie "Wargames," "the only way to win is not to play." Also, if people were to pay attention to me, they'd be able to see through my professional facade and tell that I found them shallow, shrill, and toxically banal. And in their eyes that would alienate me from them even more.

I can't really deal with roommates, but so far I haven't been able to afford living on my own. That may change very soon -- a prospect that I'm very excited about. My current roommates aren't bad people, they're just loud and hyperenergetic and they never shut up. Me, I'm quiet. I don't talk much. And while I'm mentally restless (and my physical restlessness is on a more macro-level, meaning i thrive on travel), I can sit still for hours and hours.

Relationships haven't gone well; I keep dating guys who are far too much like me. Recently I've gotten much better at communicating my feelings, but my last couple of boyfriends have had major panic attacks when I tried to get them to communicate theirs (I'd like to think I'm intuitive, but maybe I'm not because "getting a vibe" isn't enough for me; I need to hear the actual words come out so I know for sure). Whatever I get into next, I need to be certain that the person is emotionally mature.

Favorite music: Don't ask unless you're prepared for a very long, complicated, tiresome answer. I'm not a snob about my tastes though.

Books: Non-fiction. Reference books. Atlases and maps (esp. route maps for buses and trains). Cookbooks. Photography books (artistic photography, social documentary, mundane stock-photo clip art).

TV shows/Movies: Back when I had digital cable my favorites included "Good Eats," "The Daily Show," the Discovery Channel(s), HGTV shows on home design, VH1 Classic, old movies on TCM and the Fox Movie Channel. Favorite movies: Anything Bud Cort is in. Or Walter Matthau. I love '60s/'70s black comedies.

Instrument: Some piano (a year and a half of lessons), a bit of guitar. I studied voice formally.

Family: Small and relatively nuclear. My extended family is all dead or in Florida.

Clothing: Black, by force of habit. (I'm not goth, I'm just a native New Yorker.) I'm trying to change this now that I'm in a desert climate in summertime.
