Age: 52

Location: Illinois, USA

Hobbies and Interests: Design and/or invent, as the mood strikes. Currently living in a very small house so lots of inspiration.

Job: Current job is longest I've ever had - 8.5 years!! Wildly varied duties but beginning to get bored.

Plans for the future? Learn to surf, leaning toward self-employment

Any comments? I suspect that some aspects of autism are evolutionary. I don't look people in the eye because, quite frankly, it invites a petty, emotional transaction that doesn't interest me. That's what "socializing" is. I don't want anything from anyone so there's nothing to bargain with. People don't like that. They think they would like someone who accepts them as they are, but when they meet such a person, it makes them uncomfortable. They have nothing to "bargain" with. It's like walking around saying "Ok, I gave you a little pat on/stab in the back, now you give me one." as if human beings were a pack of wild dogs. Some do that from the time they get up in the morning until they go to bed at night and then judge themselves very harshly using nothing but that performance as their criteria. I love people to pieces, from afar, but up close and personal this socializing thing is excruciating. I don't understand why people do that to themselves.

What is your first name? You can have my first name, or my location, but not both. This is such a small country. I choose.... location.

Age: 47

Location: New Zealand

Hobbies and Interests: chickens, nutrition, reading - not sure about the rest. I get really intense about something and then after a few months it passes. Sometimes it comes back, sometimes not. Chickens are here to stay because their little bandy legs are so cute. Nutrition is here to stay because I get sick if I eat conventionally. Reading is a constant but the subject changes.

Why are you here? Life just fell apart worse and worse until I started to suspect there might be something different about me - it couldn't all just be bad luck. Then I borrowed "Finding Ben" and saw myself in him.
Also, I had this dream about a year ago. I dreamed that an intellectually handicapped couple bought a house and sold it a year later. We were buying a house at the time. Turned out we are both handicapped - me neurologically, and hubby by his dreadful childhood.

Favorite subjects: languages and biology

Year/Grade: Started school when I was 5 so I must be in year 42 by now :)

Favorite music: eclectic, but seldom listen to music for some reason. Am wondering about sensory overload now.....

Books: science fiction or non-fiction, nothing too hard. Books with pictures :)

TV shows/Movies: science fiction and comedy. I learned not to mention science fiction when I was dating online, years ago, because I got so many responses I didn't know what to do with. Women who like it seem to be rare.
One of my favourite films is "Snow Cake" - if you haven't seen it, look out for it. It's a Canadian production about a woman with HF autism, played by Sigourney Weaver. I found it very compelling - I wanted to go and live at her house, lol.

Do you like sports? No but I have developed a sincere respect for them as an alternative to war. I don't think people who like sport are idiots anymore, and that's a big step forward.

Family: NT, ACOA scientist husband who is avoidant; pets; grown children from previous marriage who are likely aspies, and one who isn't but has attachment disorder. Estranged from almost all family which I find hard.

Clothing: crinkle skirts in viscose or cotton, and soft merino jerseys. I buy my clothes by fabric, I can't stand the wrong textures.

How did you find this website? Um, Google?

Job: I did library work but I am unemployable now due to overeducation, age, and underexperience. I am working on being self-employed selling stuff online now that I realise I'm not going to become good at social anytime soon.

Plans for the future? I'd like just one more chicken :)

Any comments? I have already learned so much about myself and about how NTs work from this site - the social rules, the eye contact - these hints have been great. I always used to wish there was something that would teach me about social behaviour, but never dreamed that I would find it this way. I just couldn't figure out why most people didn't worry about it.

I'm thinking about a story I read where the spaceship had a mechanism for assessing damage, but that very part of the ship was blown away by a meteor. That describes my journey I think - not having enough social clues to realise that I had no social clues, or that other people had access to a whole world I am blind to. It seems like a miracle that I have any idea of it even now.

Thanks for reading :)
