Ok how much bandwidth do we have here? Ok I'm obsessed with music especially hard rock/heavy metal and 80's era stuff. I could go for days talking "old school" metal esp. KISS! I have an aversion to modern rock I'm not open to most music released post 1990 just don't like it. I am a completist in collecting things primarily comics from the mid 70's to mid 80's same with movies, toys, esp. Star Wars, the Micronauts,Six million dollar man, etc. I'm trying to re collect items from my childhood but my need for unchanging routine is obsessive that I have an extensive collection of vintage tv shows, movies and I have a huge collection of metal music probably close to 700 cassette tapes in 2 rubbermaid tubs! I'll read and re-read the same novels over and over only recently within the last 8 years have I "branched out" and read something different (but within my interests of course). I don't "keep up with the joneses" on principle and am happy as a clam watching hours of stuff from my childhood-teen years. I have a major problem with CGI movies as the super fast effects freak me out and overstimulate me until a: I have to leave the theater or b: I fall asleep until I'm wakened by the closing credits. I have a tendency to eat the same meals daily I will however rotate within my tastes but I do eat a lot of pizza, mexican foods, cereal and snack foods. I always order "my usual" at the same restaurants without fail. My job is routine oriented too so I'm very happy with that(I drive a school bus) I drive the same route at the same time and I don't have to interact with anyone if I choose not to.

Sounds like heaven to me. Relaxed me just to hear about it. :D I'm really settling into this whole AS thing a little late in life. I've made so many life decisions (marriage, career, home location) that are directly contrary to any AS instincts I might have had -- all based on what I thought society wanted from me and what I thought I should be comfortable with and be able to accomplish. I've never acted on instinct (i.e., according to what I thought would make me happy and comfortable) -- but rather always on intellect (i.e., according to what someone, including myself, could talk me into). I *have* accomplished things to an extent (although I'm starting to hit a ceiling, career-wise); but, it's been a ***constant*** struggle. Nothing has ever come naturally or comfortably. My whole life is a "super fast effects freak me out and overstimulate me" nightmare most of the time...

Could someone explain to me why the video game obsession comes up so often in this thread (and elsewhere)? I get the "isolationist" appeal, but lights and sounds moving so fast and all the excitement just seem totally overwhelming. Unpleasant at best. Maybe I'm just too old to get it??? (Remember that my generation grew up on Pac-Man, Frogger, and Donkey Kong.)

While you're at it, you could explain the whole anime thing to me, too. I know what it is, but again, I don't get it.

Thanks!

P.S. Why don't you all develop some "normal" hobbies like memorizing pi out to a hundred decimal places? You know, something really useful

I have lots of different interests but the main ones are ancient civilizations (like ALL of them...), japanese swords (I'm a pacifist though), music, and computers.
Right now I'm learning bodyboard (awesome waves nearby), and I also like mountainbiking, an unusual trait in us aspies I guess :)

Welcome and cheers 8)

My obession used to the air cadets, honestly, if it was cancelled for one night I'd get so jumpy and stressy over it because that's what would occupy my time, earlier this Autunm I quit cadets because it wasn't good for me anymore, my friends had left and I wasn't enjoying it anymore and wasn't getting what I originally jonied for two years prior-making friends and having a laugh in a secure environment with clear set out rules.
And now, it's skating  skating is a healthy obsession in many ways, it's helped my self-confidence a LOT, and has increased my fitness levels as I don't enjoy doing PE at school much. It also gives me something to do now, and there are a lot of very friendly people there who have one hobby in common with me, skating, and they understand the way I feel about skating too :) I strongly reccomend skating to anyone who wants to try and build self-confidence and social skills. Though, it is good to bear in mind some sessions at an ice rink are quite loud and rowdy.

I picked up a Harry Potter book when I was 6 and I've been obsessed ever since, my mum didn't believe I had read it because I read it that fast. I also had a period of time when I was younger where I was obsessed with bats. My main obsessions now are sailing which I have been doing (and obsessed with) for two years now, history (particularly the history of medicine and the american civil war, despite the fact that I am English and I have never left England :] ), and still Harry Potter.

Is Star Wars a cliche? Dammit! I hate being cliche!
Other than that my obsessions wax and wane. A lifelong obsession with cars (knowing makes/models, horsepower, price, model year changes for EVERYTHING) seems to be waning, which makes me kind of sad. Other interests will burn really hot for a while and then be gone as quickly as they came, leaving me to wonder why I ever cared so much.
An unconscience obsession of mine is with efficeincy. I go out of my way not to waste time, effort or resources to a degree that qualifies as obsession. I am always telling other people better ways to do things because I figure noone wants to be wasteful. Turns out pretty much noone else cares.
Story of my life.

Who cares? If it's yours, it's yours. Would you guys believe that Star Wars was the first movie I saw in a theater? I was probably 5 or 6, and my dad and I went together. I remember that as clearly as if it were yesterday. We've only been to two other movies togther: Indiana Jones and Pulp Fiction. I ***never*** go to movies and I (and all the NT people in my life) can't figure out why. I've probably been a dozen times in my whole life.

A hobby/obsession *has* to have a "statistical" component like that (e.g., makes, models, etc.) for me to take an interest in it. Sometimes, there's very little about the substance of whatever it is that interests me. Photography is a good example. At one time I could tell you every Nikon lens made between certain dates and all of the technical specs about it, but I never really caught on to taking pictures(!) Lots of people have labeled me "materialistic" (as in, I love the equipment but don't care that much for the activity). I wouldn't even go that far, though. I don't even like the equipment that much. I like memorizing all there is to know *about* the equipment!

Hobbies evaporate before my very eyes -- kind of like what you said. Mine are in and out much faster than your lifelong obsession with cars. A few years at best -- but sometimes only a few hours. Most are on the order of months. This is a little depressing, actually, because I get SO into them. I wonder why something that meant so much to me even just days ago holds absolutely no interest for me today. Like I was never into it in the first place. I've actually become reluctant as of late to get into anything, only because I know this is how it will end.

That sounds annoying!! ! Seriously, if a one-step task can be done in 18, I will find a way! A combination of disorganization, forgetfulness, procrastination, and the ease with which I get lost (mentally and physically) means that I am horribly inefficient. I have to be at work for 12 or 14 hours just to put in a legitimate 5 or 6 hours worth of work. :?

I'm getting the idea that it is  . I have been a delivery driver for most of the last ten years and my thing for being efficeint has made me a really good one. When I was at FedEx I would do numbers of stops and miles a day that others found hard to believe. I didn't do it by driving super fast, I did it through small time-savings that ended up making a huge difference.
And of course I would spend all day obsessing over time/distance, numbers of left/right turns, etc. It's nice to know that even though all of us in this community are different there are people out there who think like I do. I always thought I was the only one, as I'm sure we all do at some point.

My musical obsession is pretty crazy too,my friends that I do interact with call me the encyclopedia of heavy metal and I'm crammed to the brim with useless knowledge lol! but I'm also detail oriented,I can look at say a picture of Kiss and tell you what era the photo is from, and when I watch retro oriented movies say like the Wedding singer and Rock star, I drive people crazy with all the pop culture continuity mistakes. I've been playing guitar for 28 years now and I can even play pieces of music I've never really bothered to learn but I'll play the main riff from memory, esp. anything KISS recorded between 1974-1988! I'm a bit different...but I get along so far!

My obsession... hmmm...

I've always been very fond of cats. I'm very much a "cat-person". But it's not an obsession.

I used to obsess a lot over manga/anime, and other japanese stuff until recently.
It has calmed down a bit. But I still love it.
I obsess over the Hetalia series nowadays. And now I read Humons comics as well.

I've become really interested in foreign languages and cultures, (but that's probably a bit because I'm influenced by the Hetalia and Humon comics.)
Learning languages is actually really smart, because i have to obsess over it in order to study einough to learn it properly. Right now I'm teaching myself russian.
I'm actually a bit obsessed with russian stuff right now. Like, I found a tea that's named "russian earl grey", and suddenly I drink that tea really often.

I'm obsessing a bit over reading newspapers and watching news, really. There are many issues that I really feel like I need to keep updated on, since I find it so fascinating!
And I love tv-shows that poke fun at politics and media, such as:
- The Daily Show and the Colbert Report.
- Nytt på Nytt (the Norwegian "Have i news for you").

Hi! I am new here. My obsession is Anime and Manga also. :) Death Note is my specialty. I, like you and Sailor Moon, could tell you anything you ever wanted to know about it and more. I do enjoy watching other anime but no other has captivated me like L.
