The Dino-Aspie Ex-Café (for Those 40+... or feeling creaky)

I've never been to a pow-wow either, but I did have a great experience on the Spirit Lake Reservation in North Dakota. It was so strange how it came about. I and my then fourteen yr old daughter and her best friend of the same age took the North American Rail pass in August of 98 I think it was. One of our stops was Devil's Lake, ND. In the center of town, very dinky and unimpressive, we asked around the citizenry if their was anything interesting we could do. The only answers we received was "Well, we have a brand new Walmart." So we took a cab, the "only" cab to Walmart and the girls got their nails done, fake nails I think. When we got back to our hotel room I pulled out the phone book and went to the yellow pages and found "Spirit Lake Reservation". Called the number and this guy gets on and I ask him if it would be possible for us to visit. He says he will pick us up at our hotel and take us there. He turns out to be this big strapping Lakota man who is also the guidance counselor for the reservation's school. His teenage son was in the back seat and pretty much ignored us. But, (it disturbs me that I can't remember his name) the guy drops off his kid and takes us on a tour all around the reservation, explaining certain rituals and showing us how and where they take place. I could go into detail here but won't. He also took us to the casino, which by the way, was owned by the reservation but operated by whites only. Some law wouldn't allow the Lakota people to work there. So we had lunch in the casino and then he took us to the school which was amazing. It had no windows, though, because these were constantly being broken and replaced. We gave him a nice donation for the school. That's all he wanted and was very happy to receive that. I've got it all on video tape, the whole 30 day trip on video tape, in fact. I learned so much from that man and will never forget that experience. My grandmother's grandmother was full Lakota.
So, lets hear the buffalo hooves, and the wolf howls. I'm ready for them. Strong medicine is called for.

geez, did I scare off a few folks or is that just my ego speaking.Reguardless,I dont want to dominate the cafe, honestly.I just wanted you folks to be the first I shared with.I couldnt decide where to post this for WP feedback but finally decided on the ''Writing/arts" section, since that is who I hope will want to participate.Maybe I will move it to general, eventually.
So,that is where anyone who wants to discus this can go to contribute or I'm open to PM's for volunteers, submits, ideas, etc. One thing I know would help is if I had the ability to "edit the superflous",good lord I am a wordy SOB and know I have probably lost 90% of readers with the daunting task of desiphering my bad spelling, run on sentences and page long posts...
Robyn.....help.I'm in great need of your editing super powers.(She has a special red pen and not afraid to use it)
Glad to have the addition of your voice Blessedmom.I only howl background vocals, need somene who can carry a melody.I also am hoping you will submit some of your knitting designs, creations and suggestions.I think it is a wonderful "stim" for flappers.

Here you go, Nan.
I caught two varieties.
1.On the Kawelo side of the family, Hiilei's great-great-grandfather George Manuia Galbraith learned traditional squidding from his mother's side of the family.* His father, George Galbraith, was an Irish whaler who married a Hawaiian woman and moved to Nuuanu in the mid-1800s.

The Bricklayers Song:
This song was popularized by Scots singing duo The Corries and is also known as "Why Paddy's Not at Work Today." Amongst many other listeners, physics teachers have written to us for the lyrics to help them teach their students the principals of mechanics.
Dear Sir I write this note to you to tell you of my plight
For at the time of writing it I'm not a pretty sight
My body is all black and blue, my face a deathly grey
And I write this note to say why I am not at work today
Whilst working on the 14th floor some bricks I had to clear
But tossing them down from such a height was not a good idea
The foreman wasn't very pleased he is an arkward sod
And he said I had to cart them down the ladders in me hod
Clearing all these bricks by hand it was so very slow
So I hoisted up a barrel and secured a rope below
But in me haste to do the job, I was too blind to see
That a barrel full of building bricks was heavier than me
And so when I untied the rope the barrel fell like lead
And clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead
I shot up like a rocket, and to my dismay I found
That halfway up I met the bloody barrel coming down
Well the barrel broke me shoulder as to the ground it sped
And when I reached the top I banged the pulley with me head
But I clung on tightly none with shock from this almighty blow
While the barrel spilled out half its bricks some 14 floors below
When these bricks had fallen from the barrel to the floor
I then outweighed the barrel and so started down once more
But I clung on tightly to the rope my body racked with pain
And halfway down I met the bloody barrel once again
Now the force of this collision halfway down the office block
Caused multiple abrasions and a nasty case of shock
But I clung on tightly to the rope as I fell towards the ground
And I landed on the broken bricks the barrel had scattered round.
Now as I lay there on the ground I thought I'd passed the worst
But the barrel hit the pulley wheel and then the bottom burst
A shower of bricks rained down on me I didn't have a hope
As I lay there bleeding on the ground I let go the bloody rope
The barrel now being heavier so started down once more
It landed right across me as I lay there on the floor
It broke 3 ribs and my left arm and I can only say
I hope you`ll understand why I am not at work today .

Thanks for the link. I love the Bricklayers Song. My son is a Paddy (Sean is his first name) and he will love those lyrics as much as I do. I'm going to email them to him directly. He's not a bricklayer, he's a carpenter, but we have a whole slew of bricklayers with the same last name living in our area.
oh, the nutrition police are gonna be after me. i just got home and realized the kid won't be home for a couple of hours so i had supper. sortof. i haven't had anything to eat today - got up too late for breakfast and then worked through lunch. so i grabbed a hand full of tortilla chips, half a glass of wine (nothing else cold in the fridge except cranberry juice - not that desperate!), and a couple of spoons full of vanilla iceing out of a can. maybe i better order a pizza in or something. hmmm. then again, i think there might be some cheerios in the cabinet... but no milk. drat. oh well. nevermind.
the photocopy machine is being replaced. i swear, i've NEVER seen one actually spit the feeder tray across a room like that.
