What is your first name?: I go by Blackbird. I don't like my given name, and consider that my "real" one.

Age: 20.

Location: Virginia.

Hobbies and Interests: Fiction in general. Books/movies/television. Ultimately, I want to be a successful author, which I'm working on. Other than that, I like clothes. A LOT. A bit of a dandy, here. A bit below amateur in sewing, I'm proud of my level in knitting.

Why are you here?: A lot of things point in the direction of asperger's syndrome, and some...mmm...life difficulties have prompted a more realistic look at it. I research everything whenever I feel like it, including mental things. One person sent me a list of criteria that was a bit different, and someone else I trust, after I showed it to them and talked some more about it, told me they thought it was a possibility since we met, and their background gives me the impression they don't say that flippantly. So, not being in a position to run out and pay for a "real" diagnosis, I've opted for research until that's possible.

Favorite subjects: My favorite subjects when I was in school were English and Art.

Year/Grade: Out of school.

Favorite music: Muse. Owl City. The Avett Brothers. Some classical. Something I want to call...light electronica.

Books: Sherlock Holmes. All of it. Holmes is my hero. A Picture of Dorian Gray. Dracula. Good Omens.

TV shows/Movies: Sherlock, Doctor Who, the Sherlock Holmes movies, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind*, Thor, The Majestic, Arsenic and Old Lace

Instrument: I play the violin. Wish I could play piano better (I know a bit) but my left hand doesn't like me that much. It sticks to the violin, instead.

Do you like sports?: No. Nooooo. It brrrrnz.

Family: Favorite family? The Addams. Otherwise -- three brothers and my parental units are still one unit.

Clothing: I'm rather fond of black suits. "What would you do if you won the lottery?" -- "Buy three really nice black suits, custom tailored." I get sort of…iffy with weird colors and patterns (I'm really not going to like someone around me wearing orange stripes and pink sparkles. no) so I usually like the minimal, dark things, heavy lean on the more conservative gothic. I have a migraine condition that contributes to me being put off loud colors and patterns, and fidgety things, so over the last couple years I've gotten darker and more minimalistic.

How did you find this website?: Research eventually led to wikipedia, and there's a link in the page on AS.

Job: I live at home at the moment, but I make some money in other skills, and some in my writing work. Once I have transport, I'll be applying to bookstores first.

Plans for the future?: My ideal is to be working in a book store, living with that friend I wrote that I trust, working on expanding my writing. Hopefully that will happen in the next six months or so. Even more ideally, I want to live on my writing, get those three black suits and an orange cat, and have tea with that friend every morning.

Any comments?: I know a lot of people freak out over self-diagnosis, but I have mixed views on that. I'm here to talk to people and get a view in addition to the impersonal research. If I see a problem, I want all the pieces of it right in front of me, otherwise I feel like I'm wasting time and energy. Identify mission > get the supplies for the mission > execute mission > achieve a solution/conclusion. Even if getting all the research is long…at least I feel like I'm doing something.

When were you diagnosed?: I haven't been diagnosed because of a combination of fear and not having money or health insurance, but I found out I had Asperger's Syndrome earlier this year.

Favorite subjects: Film, but I like all subjects

Year/Grade: sophomore in college

Favorite music: I don't usually listen to a specific type of music for very long, but I can enjoy most kinds of music.

Books: I'm a slow reader, but I like the kinds of books that are depressing and hard to understand.

TV shows/Movies: My favorite TV shows are Mad Men, Arrested Development, and Twin Peaks. I mostly watch art house and foreign films, basically the same as the books I like: depressing and hard to understand.

Instrument: I played the violin in high school, but I wasn't very good.

Do you like sports? No. I like walking and I want to get into biking, but I'm scared to because I recently got into an accident.

Any comments? This website saved my life and gave me my soul back. I was a lost, sad, tortured creature facing unknown obstacles at every turn before I found out I have Asperger's. Now I find strength in my gifts and no longer punish myself for my perceived weaknesses. So all in all it is all good. lol

Why are you here? Lots of severe problems have left my mind an absolute wreck. I'm seeing a psychologist and a psychiatrist now and I'm on citalopram, trazodone, and risperdal daily, along with zolpidem as needed. I'm having more and richer positive experiences these days but I still have severe mood swings and I'm often suicidal. I have a really thin support network and I'm living off of my parents without a job. Hopefully in the relatively near future I'll be able to move to Denmark, where I see my future picking up significantly.

When were you diagnosed? My psychiatrist and I agree there's a pretty clear Asperger's diagnosis, but for the moment I'm being treated for alcohol addiction (and depression) and the psychiatric diagnosis has to be put off.

Favorite subjects: Combinatorics, pharmacology, Christianity, biology, neurology, danske sprog ^_^ not that i really know much.

Plans for the future? Learn more abount my conditions, and begin a process of dealing with what can be changed, and realizing what cannot be changed. this will determine a direction with an appropriate outcome for myself (content with myself and work).
