...It's just the illustrations that have taken me so long, because I had to finish inventing the inks that I am using!
Two inky plants (from Back East) come to mind, so I wondered if you tried them and what you thought of them as "media": black walnut husk, and the berries of something we used to call "poison sumac".
I can verify the walnut husks, me leetle kiddie fingers were covered in it, Black Walnut tree in the back yard. (very small this year and falling already, shouldn't be this early. The chipmunk under the deck is happy though) Butternut's will do it too. I've read the "soup" made from the balck walnut husks were used as a fish stunner, never tried it, so can't say. For most folks making inks from posion sumac is not a real good idea, however.
I recall from my childhood that, along with honeysuckle and blackberries, "poison sumac" could be found everywhere. A fast-growing plant with bunches of round, inky berries. Of course, I was intrigued by the "poison" adjective. How poisonous was it? Maybe I couldn't eat the enticing berries... but perhaps I could do something else with them? Like... make ink?!
Oh!! And... Queen Anne's Lace. Is it really a wild carrot?
yup, white as a radish and skinny. ..

You have wall to wall carpet? Some really deadly vapors come off the stuff. I wouldn't let the baby's play on the rugs when here. When they got a bit older, couldn't stop them. Got rid of them finally and went just small area rugs, better then the large, some kind of compromise at best.

We have a cleaning guru here; 'Spotless' and 'Speed Cleaning' by Shannon Lush. Her basic ingredients are vinegar and bicarbonate soda. The toilet is done by mixing carb soda and vinegar; as it foams you scrub.
She understands about how chemicals work. Some hints

#wash silk in cheap shampoo which is odourless.

when I had to take on the persona of an upscale office inhabitant I bypassed the whole 'fingernail polish' but having acrylic nails put on. . .and I maintained them for years. .and they were lovely. But I have the fingernail polish "squeezed" feeling, only mine manifests as "suffocation". Isn't it strange, but with the heavier acrylic I didn't have that feeling, only those thin coats of polish triggered it.
and I have to have 'unscented' soaps and deodorants. . .or I am scrubbing it off in the restroom!

don't assume that, it will take about three weeks for them to grow out if you want to get them off easily. Don't get the claw nails or gussy it up with fancy smancy glitter or what ever or it might bug you. (do it later when you can handle the nails and get bored.)
Just find a pic of what you are looking for and bring it in. Ask them to be gentle and realize you might take one whiff of the salon and back out, not believing that you are going to have to put up with THAT smell for 45 minutes to an hour. And go back not longer than two weeks later so you don't have 'hag hands'.
They are sort of like a shag haircut. . .once you decide to have them, you are committed
But they are a life saver if you have to look good immediately! Especially if they look natural -Ask for an "American Tip with pale pink on the nailbed and white painted on the tip. Don't go for the spray paint, it never looks natural, and indeed. . they don't want it to. It is the understated perfect look for an interview or an especially important business or social meeting.
I like the liquid Yardly's Lavendar. . I used the bar for ages, but the liquid is very moisturizing and the fragrance is natual.

YEAAAAAAA!! !!
Berkeley's tree-sitters can stay in their perches despite their collection of propane tanks and increasing sanitary problems, a judge ruled today.
Alameda County Superior Court Judge Richard Keller denied UC Berkeley's request to oust the protesters, who took up residence in the Memorial Stadium oak grove nine months ago after the university announced it wanted to clear part of the grove for a sports training center.
Keller said the university did not supply enough evidence to show an immediate threat of fire or health problems and scheduled a full hearing for Oct. 1, 10 days after the court hears a trio of lawsuits intended to stop the sports facility.
"We have a long tradition of honoring and protecting free speech on this campus, but we also have to protect the safety of the students, community and the people in the trees," said Mogulof. "This is becoming a small village, and we're seeing all the same sanitation and safety issues you see in any small village."
Doug Buckwald, an activist supporting the half-dozen or so tree-sitters, said he wasn't surprised by the judge's ruling because he said the tree-sitters have an excellent safety record. He also said he wasn't surprised UC asked for the restraining order.
"UC has been trying to do a number of things to stop the protest lately," he said. "They didn't like all the coverage we got at the Cal-Tennessee football game, and they really want this to be over with."
Another big crowd is expected at the grove Saturday, when the Cal football teams plays Louisiana Tech. The University erected a fence around the tree-sitters prior to the Tennessee game Sept. 1 in an effort to protect the protesters from rowdy football fans
does a little happy dance. . .I love those trees. . .

It was an old "gaffers" trick. I kid you not. Gaffer being the head guy, that handle the clean irons (blow pipes for making glass by hand). Clean irons are hard on the hands, understatement, till you get the colluseus built up. When off (Time enough that the calluseus went away) from the shops for a while they would go home and use their wife's urine to toughen up the hands. I didn't have a wife that was willing back then. I was pretty sure hers would eat my hands like a caustic poisonous acid anyway. (1st wife). I wasn't a gaffer, but did my sahre of handling the clean irons.

Victor Hugo
Thanks Postie! I did not know this about Victor Hugo. I am always trying to achieve unique colors that have never been seen. Effects not yet experienced by the viewer. Isn't that strange? Trying to create a color that does not yet exist? I'm trying to replicate the colors I see in my dreams, and it's frustrating because I just can't get "there". I know that my quest is an impossibility. Yet I never stop. I know this is insanity.
Still, it has lead to some interesting discoveries. I have also been making my own "paper" out of crushed marble and bone glued to wood so that I can draw on it with different metals - some of it has the effect of mirrors, so the picture changes color depending on what is around it or who is standing in front of it. I'm trying to achieve the effect of a totally different picture depending on who is looking at it, and the colors the person looking at the picture exudes.
But you showed me earlier (when we discussed Monet's painting) that each person sees each picture in their own way anyway, and that is already the case with every picture.
I appreciate your sharing that with me. Good to know that I am not the only one who does the strange things I do. I wonder if he also saw pictures on the blank paper the way I do? If I look long enough, there is already a picture there - more often than not a much better picture than the one I had in mind to draw or paint. Whenever I sit to draw, I invite the ideas of the universe in, and any past artist who would like to join me. If I start seeing images I just go with them and let the "visiting artists" play. "My" best stuff is always a result of those experiences. I know this sounds weird, but that's how I experience art. It really isn't me. Just something else guiding me. I am only a conduit. I am only tracing what is already there.

Sounds fascinating. Where do you get bone? Animal bone like pork chops and chicken and ribs?
I had a friend who asked me to keep my eye out for any bird or animal carcass that I might stumble upon during my travels as she liked to use them in her art work. What about bone meal?
I'm no stranger to strangeness myself. I close my eyes and see pictures, beautiful colors used in unusual ways. I then attempt to recreate what I see. So yes, it's all there somewhere floating around in the cosmos waiting to be grabbed and relocated.
Hi Laurie. It sure is a beautiful day here in PA. All of you women are reminding me that my house needs a good cleaning. According to your posts yesterday, you all had some kind of a cleaning fever. I hope I catch it.
Hi, Carol! It is lovely here today, too. I took my dog for a 2 mile walk this morning after we walked lil' girl to school. It froze last night!! There was ice on the vehicles and the air was so crisp it almost hurt to inhale at first. I love the smell of the fall air! And the leaves are falling and the Canada geese are flying to their winter habitats. (((sigh))))
I caught my cleaning bug from Merle! It was her fault! And it was raining here so it seemed like a good day to clean. Don't know if I will catch the bug today. I am very angry at my husband so I may go clean out the basement. I clean when I am mad. And I do a great job!
Chuck's art ideas sound interesting. Now that you are retired just think of all the time you could spend doing things like that. Create, relax, enjoy!!
I love the fall too. The fall always seems to have a stillness and peace about it.
My bedroom is so cluttered right now that it's beginning to make me claustrophobic. Wheee. I spelled that right. so today, I think I will attempt to bring about some order to it. Last night I was awakened by a crash in my bedroom coming from the direction of a metal file cabinet which holds our TV. It wasn't the sound of one thing crashing, but many things falling and crashing together. I got out of bed and checked that area in the dimness of a night light and couldn't find any evidence of where the crashing sound came from. This morning, in full daylight, I checked again and still can not figure out what objects fell and crashed. I know I wasn't dreaming.
I had a friend who asked me to keep my eye out for any bird or animal carcass that I might stumble upon during my travels as she liked to use them in her art work. What about bone meal?
I used the dried bones of a cow carcass I found. I crushed them into a powder with a mortar and pestle, mixed it with crushed marble dust, and stirred the powder into a pot of low heat rabbit skin glue using a formula from a 15th century art materials book. I painted thin layers of this onto a prepared piece of wood, sanding the brush strokes away after each layer dried. I put down 8 to 12 layers as an experiment to see how it would effect durability and hold up to the metal. 8 does just as good a job as 12 layers, and requires less time and sanding.
Making the "paper" is an art unto itself!
I find that I can draw on this "paper" with silver, gold and platinum. You cannot erase anything, so each stroke must be exact the first time. I love how unforgiving it is. I rarely use an eraser anyway. The silver tarnishes over time and develops the most interesting patina! Like an old photograph. I like its effects better than that of the gold and platinum.
I don't think the bone is actually necessary at all. The next batch I make I am just going to use zinc oxide and see what happens. I love to experiment! If you try it, let me know how you like it!
