OK, here are my answers to the standard intro questions.

Quote:
What is your first name?
Matt

Age:
48

Location:
Currently? Bass Coast, Victoria but shortly relocating to Cassowary Coast, Queensland.

Hobbies and Interests:
These tend to change from time to time, but currently Unix/Linux Scripting & Systems Administration, learning to play Ukulele, boatbuilding (including models).

Why are you here?
I have begun a little "intellectual journey" through Asperger's Syndrome and how it affects me and those around me. Some years back I learned through recovery from alcoholism in a 12 step program, that I can change deep seated beliefs and ingrained behaviours - that although I am alcoholic, I do not have to behave accordingly. I intend to apply similar lessons to my AS - to discover (whether it be an aspie trait or not) what about me I can and cannot change, what I should and should not change.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder):
Short answer: 48 y.o.
Longer answer
I've always been a little bit quiet, somewhat shy, and not interested in the same things as the "masses". A nephew, at the tender age of about 4 years, declared -"I've got half a robot brain, like Uncle Matt". He had recently been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. Since that time, I have learned a bit about AS, and with a bit of self-knowledge, have had an increasing suspicion that I too am an Aspie. I was formally diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome late last year and began this journey of self-discovery.

Favorite subjects:
In secondary school, sciences & languages - hardly relevant now, though.

Year/Grade:
Year 12

Favorite music:
Pretty eclectic tastes really, but 70's prog rock seems to feature prominently (Mike Oldfield, early Queen, Pink FLoyd, Jethro Tull)

Books:
Not much of a reader, but I did enjoy Eric Flint's "1632" series and Jean Auel's "Earth's Children" series.

TV shows/Movies:
Mostly escapist speculative fiction (yes, including Star Trek and friends)

Instrument:
Ukulele

Do you like sports?
Not particularly, but I do like watching and used to play Rugby Union

Family:
Married (she's NT) - we have no kids.
Other aspies in family: 1 nephew diagnosed (but I do think my Dad and probably his brother share some aspie traits)

Clothing:
Really? That's relevant? Jeans/shorts & t-shirts (dark or subdued colours)

How did you find this website?
Google

Job:
None at the moment

Plans for the future?
Had enough big changes occur in the past few years. Not signing up for any more just yet.

Any comments?

What is your first name? Edward

Age: 33

Location: Iowa, USA

Hobbies and Interests: Hobbies Drawing, Painting, Graphic Design, Computer Hardware and Repair. Interested in all things mechanical, efficiency of processes, Green Design, Civil Engineering

Why are you here? Looking for a place where I can learn more about myself through learning about similar experiences of others

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): Last six months

Favorite subjects: (see hobbies and interests listed above)

Year/Grade: Graduated HS

Favorite music: Current Alternative, 1st Wave, Synth, Classical

Books: I dont read much, and when I do its technical reference manuals. Anything else I read I cant seem to remember much.

TV shows: ST NG, DS9, Voyager, SG1, Atlantis, Storage Wars, Futurama, Mythbusters. Movies: Star Trek IV, Star Trek VI, Worlds Fastest Indian, Stranger than Fiction, Jane Eyre

Instrument: I prefer to play around with software music composers rather than play an instrument.

Do you like sports? Not really. I was raised to be a NASCAR fan, grew up liking it, but there seems to be far too many inconsistencies in the implementation of the rules and how they are applied differently to different teams. Too many coincidental patterns for the sport to be random. Once I was convinced the sport was "fixed", I lost interest.

Family: Just me and my dog

Clothing: Polo and a relaxed fit pair of jeans

How did you find this website? Found out I was an aspie, so I went online and began looking around for articles pertaining to subjects and thoughts I was interested in or things I think about and was curious how they related to other aspies... and I found this site.

Job: A really boring one, but it allows me to day dream all day and get paid for it... so I guess I shouldn't complain.

Plans for the future? Just to continue gathering knowledge on subjects I care about, whatever they may be. I would be happy If I could implement my ideas on the next iteration of human mass transit.

Any comments? Ill leave that to the posts I comment on.

I just joined, so I thought I would fill this out! :)

First name: Emma

Age: 12 (13 in July)

Location: Somerset/Bristol border, England.

Hobbies and Interests: I sing, play guitar, play piano. I also write, I roleplay, cosplay and I game - a lot.

Why are you here? - I'm here because I was looking for somewhere for people like me, as I don't feel very comfortable around people my age or a lot of people in my area. Neurotypical people my age I don't exactly get along with either.

When were you diagnosed? - I was diagnosed at birth. I have basically a bit of everything, but learning-wise I seem to be fine. Aspergers and mixed autism.

Favorite subjects: Music, English, Learning For Life, Social Skills and PE (when it's Dodgeball, running - even though I can't run properly - or netball).

Year/Grade: 8

Favorite music: I am in love with rock, metal, and also emo and some things that you can't exactly put a name to. My favorite band is Breaking Benjamin, though my taste in music is still very varied, as I like a bit of everything, so it's hard to decide.

Books: The Harry Potter series, and the Sherlock Holmes books.

TV shows/Movies: I like horror films, as well as love films and comedy, so it's hard to choose. I remember that one of the first movies I watched and loved was 'Look Who's Talking'.

Instrument: I sing, play the guitar and play the piano.

Do you like sports? Hell to the yes! Depending on what it is.

Family: Parents, two sisters and a brother, my dog, two rabbits, a rat. Two nieces and a nephew and a niece and a nephew on the way. Also, I have a close cousin and a close Aunt and Uncle.

Clothing: I'm really into checkered shirts, for some reason. I used to wear all black but realized that it hardly suited me and started wearing bright colours, and people started to compliment me more. I can't wear that much jewelry as it catches on me and the metal hurts me.

How did you find this website? - I just searched 'Autistic forums' and I found this.

Job: Student.

Plans for the future? - I plan to get into the music industry, or perhaps write books, or become a medic. I still have a long way ahead of me, though, and I'll be glad just to get good grades at this point.

Any comments? - Thank you for making this forum - I can tell I'm going to like it here!

Bluebrick: I believe that you have as, I've been diagnosed with as. I say this due to your "robot brain", and the fact that you have many in your family that have as, and as is in fact genetically linked. Unlike alcoholism, you cannot change as, because this is how your brain was developed, you cannot change the biology of your brain. You can learn social skills or more social skills to better adapt to the NT world you live in.
