Wow, this is easily identifiable if you know me...

29

Location:
Illinois, USA

Hobbies and Interests:
Birds, history, stereography.

Why are you here?
Primarily to talk with other parents, but also to socialize.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder):
I am not medically diagnosed as on the spectrum but have a laundry list of other diagnoses, many of which have changed or were subject to disagreement from professional to professional. Let's just say I've been considered nutty as as squirrel since the mid 1980's.

Favorite music:
It depends on my mood.

TV shows/Movies:
I used to be a hard core X-Phile but only watch reruns casually now. I like AMC's Sunday night shows (Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Walking Dead).
I love movies and am into cinema theory.

Instrument:
I used to play guitar.

Do you like sports?
I do not like to play sports, but I enjoy going to the occasional game. I like going to the batting cages.

Family:
I am married and have a daughter, plus three parrots.
My relationship with the rest of my family ranges from friendly but distant to barely on speaking terms.

Clothing:
I am a stay at home mother, so I wear primarily casual attire.

How did you find this website?
There was a link at the end of a test I took.

Job:
I do not work outside the home right now. I have done many types of job in the past. My favorite involved working with dogs.

Plans for the future?
I would like to work in an archive or museum setting eventually. My degree is in art history, but I may pursue another degree in public history or museology to further this goal.

Any comments?
No.

How many pickled peppers did Peter Piper pick? Do we have any data on the mass and density of the pickled peppers or the rate of Peter Pipers pickled pepper picking? Is a peck a volume, time, noun? Were the peppers pickled Pre or Post picking? Is Peter Piper's estimate of pickled pepper picking within 4.5 sigma?

Found WP while researching Asperger's, seemed to 'fit.'

Epilepsy, 1974
Generalized Anxiety, 1998
Social Anxiety, 2010

Favorite subjects:
Family history
Pre- revolutionary Russia

Too many.

Old movies - I love Turner Classic
Law & Order
Frasier
Downton Abbey

Do you like sports?
No. Could never see the point. Might in part be because I was so physically awkward growing up.

Family:
One brother, one sister. My brother seems to be the only 'normal' one in the family. I suspect my sister is aspie, father almost definitely, mother overcompensates for her husband's and children's quirks.

Clothing:
Jeans
Henley T shirts
Long sleeve button-down shirts
Khakis

How did you find this website?
WP came up repeatedly in searches on Asperger's symptoms. The posters seemed to be describing me!

Job:
Barely. Had been doing I/T consulting for small companies but burned out because of the fast pace, ever-changing schedule, ineptitude at sales, difficulty dealing with dissatisfied customers, beating myself up over mistakes, not asking for help when I needed it, couldn't 'network' with other people in my field or potential customers...

Plans for the future?
I need to work again, but at something that builds on my strengths and not dependent on my weaknesses.

Any comments?
Nope.

What is your first name? L.

Age: 23

Location: Michigan

Hobbies and Interests: Gemstone lore, Tarot, Walking (helps calm my mind), being a parent.

Why are you here? To feel less alone. To learn more about Aspergers, and the rest of the spectrum.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): I've suspected for a while, and am just beginning the process of a formal diagnosis.

Favorite subjects: In school? I did very well with English. Did TERRIBLY with things like History, that required me to memorize things about long-dead people who I didn't really care about.

Year/Grade: N/A. Graduated high school just fine. Couldn't keep up in college, though I tried twice. It was just too overwhelming.

Favorite music: Iron & Wine, Bob Dylan, Maria Taylor, Bright Eyes (but really only I'm Wide Awake, it's Morning, the rest is kind of annoying), some Sufjan Stevens (like the Michigan album). Iron & Wine is my favorite. The songs are just so soothing.

Books: Love the old Sherlock Holmes. Fiction with engaging logic--could it be better? I also love just about anything by Isaac Asimov, although the Foundation series is my favorite.

TV shows/Movies: X-Files, a couple of old black and white ghost movies (especially The Haunting), the old Sherlock Holmes movies with Basil Rathbone. I used to be very into anime and manga (Serial Experiments: Lain was my favorite, and .hack//SIGN.) but as I settled into motherhood, I kind of fell out of it.

Instrument: N/A--no where near coordinated enough for that.

Do you like sports? Nope. Can't do it.

Family: The family I was born with was cut off long ago for either being abusive, or siding with abuser. But, I've built myself a family that I love. I'm married, and have two little daughters.

Clothing: I like using clothing as a way to convey my personality to the world. It's hard to communicate verbally, I feel, in a way that will actually let people know who I am. So, I try to do this with clothes, although I know I'm still somewhat awkward with it. The last year or so, I've been really trying to dress more femininely. I used to dress crazy, blue hair, piercings, eclectic clothes (well, I still dress pretty eclecticly, but am trying to get more classy about it.). But, I realized that a lot of how I was dressing was just me mimicking the one close friend I had in high school who forcibly took me under her wing, because that was the kind of thing she was in to. When I realized that, I stopped dressing that way, for the most part, although I do miss my blue hair sometimes.

How did you find this website? It was listed in a series of links that I found on a blog about Asperger's.

Job: I was a stay at home mom for a long time. Recently, finances have been scary enough that I have had to take a job. I'm working at a little coffee/chocolates/ice cream specialty store. I like it so far, because it isn't so crazy busy that it is overwhelming, and I can keep myself happy doing little busy work, sorting and organizing chocolates, facing items on shelves, etc. Still, it is taking a lot out of me. I'm not used to being out in public this much anymore.

Plans for the future? I am not sure. Just keep trying to be the best mom and wife that I can be. I love, love working with semi-precious stones (amazonite, moonstone, etc). I know that it's my "special interest". But, I try not to think about it, because the way finances are, I can't really do anything with it. It makes me sad. So, I hope to get back in a place where I can finally be back in my hobby again. I like making jewelry--but, really, making jewelry is just an excuse to play with the pretty stones I'm obsessed with, ha.

Well there's a nice karma to that in that the new family gets you & the old one is stuck with the abuser.

Don't give up. The opportunity will probably occur one day. I started doing little bits of a special interest on the side for a hobby business, and eventually did it near full time. To succeed the best course is to be very good at it and knowledgeable of all aspects.

P.S. Welcome to WP.

Thanks for that. I'd never thought of it that way before, but it's comforting in a way!

I did actually make jewelry and sell it for a little while, and did okay. But, because of finances, I wound up having to spend what little money I made on, you know, diapers and bills and unexciting things in emergency situations, so wasn't able to reinvest it and keep it going. I do hope to do it again some day!

Thank you for the welcome. :)

Same thing happened to me this past year and once the restock funds are gone, its difficult to get it back unless you get a small windfall (like tax return, etc.). A slow 'bit here, bit there' restock is possible but takes time. Also, and this is a bit more extreme, I buy stuff that might be sold eventually with my B-day/Xmas money etc. With collectibles it doesn't really matter. It comes in, it goes out, the fun is in messing around with it, though I do have some things I would maybe cry about if I had to part with them.

Normally I try to time the restock between Apr - Aug and not do much selling then. And prices tend to be lower then. There are more buyers (online) in fall and winter and so that is time to sell and get better price for your item. Also do some serious research to find sources, leave no stone unturned (pun intended). I always try new search/hunts and always stumble on new supplies. Not tons, but something.

Thank you! That is good advice!

What I used to do was scour thrift stores and garage sales for GOOD (materials-wise) but usually ugly, vintage jewelry for cheap, dismantle it, remake it into new jewelry (upcycling) and then sell that. Then, I used the proceeds from upcycling to buy new materials. Unfortunately, I just don't have the time for that right now, so I'm focusing on just squirreling away enough money to buy new materials. Hopefully over the summer! Your advice makes sense, about doing what I can to stock over the summer, and selling more over late fall/winter.

Ha, the picture in my avatar is me wearing something that I made, actually--with faceted glass scavenged from a TERRIBLE old chandelier.
