I was sure I got it from the Pratchett quote file, but I can't find it there anymore. Either my memory is wrong, or this quote got lost in one of the revisions. It's been a few years since I saw it. My standard sig is from somewhere in the quote files.
It was from the part of the quote files which lists some of his contributions to internet groups.
I don't think the part about making trains run on time was intended as historical truth, but the whole thing was intended to point out that even if you accepted the urban myth about the alleged advantages of fascism, the drawbacks are more severe.
For the sake of teaching the controversy, I feel I must link to Ms Hilton's public defender, Scott Adams. See last paragraph.
Speaking of teaching the controversy, why doesn't Fox News give air time to the Flat Earth society whenever they have news about NASA? That would be only fair and balanced, by their definition.

An OutKast song for outcasts! Nice happy little tune with a beat, and you can dance to it. Good to see the Peanuts gang Angus Younging it. (This is obviously a group of Aspies. They mostly dance separately Schroeder and Marcie definitely were Aspie.)

I am pretty technically challenged, but even I know you don't shake Polaroid pictures any more! What's up with that?

Thanks for the link. I'm still stuck on Three Days Grace and then only one of their songs. I think I'm going into my third day with it.
Okay, then ........... first album.....Canadian..........very young........ I almost feel the urge to apologize to you for that one, but I like it anyway. You're almost as bad as me, Sir Music Critic!

I did find the quote but worded slightly differently.

I hate to say it but that is a good point.

What scintillating topics! I am completely exhausted today. But its good to be exhausted because I had fun, rather than my run-of-the-mill everyday exhaustion. I'm probably going to have to sleep all day. Fighting it because I wanted to check in. But it was so weird but cool to be sitting with all these other people in a nice restaurant; Seafood Bar and Grille. I had the Shrimp with key lime and sun dried tomato sauce with Kalamata olives and feta cheese. Delicious!

It was one of the things I enjoyed so much about Canada, back in my dark ages. Back then Canadian Radio was censoring what you heard. I know Canadians didn't see it that way. A certain percentage of music played had to be by Canadian bands, I think the percentage was rather high. I under stand why it was in place, keep the Canadian sense of culture intact. What it did was allow every town with a bar and I didn't find any without, another endearing Canadian trait, to have a local band or 6. So no need to ever apologize about any music video to me. Hell the only thing I play well is the bass boost on my head phones. I keep meaning to hook the keyboard up to the computer, but I think that would mean changing the sound card to this one and I don't wanna right now. But I do enjoy looking at music with a critics eye, rightly or wrongly, I do like it. They did have the basics going for them, lots of bass, the chords were few and pleasant, repetitious, that's the basics for stimming music to me. The dude still needed more youthful angst in his voice. Some have it and some don't, you have to reach deep for that real feeling, Joplin sure had it. Just watch her face, that wasn't theatrics. I just tried to change my stimming music over to Metallica and Apocalyptica, both doing the same songs, not together. I don't think it's going to work, but I do so much like the cello.

But you have to give your whole life to a cello. When I realized that, I went back to the guitar and just turned the volume up a bit louder.

Just venturing forth becuse I wanted to say that I'm really happy that you had such a great time Hartzofspace, I had to go to a wedding awhile back and it was HORRIABLE for me, I got out of their ASAP. I hadn't heard of "Aspegers" at the time and it was made excruciatingly clear to me that I still did NOT "fit in" (I was so "alone" that the groom had me come sit w/ the wedding party, it was VERY embarassing to be honest )
It's nice and gives me hope to hear of someone having a positive group experience. Do you plan on getting together again? Sounds like the food was good also.
Oh yeah, I'm blond-haired and blue-eyed and I don't consider my self TOO "evil" Granted I dye my hair now (When my oldest daughter was murdered, ALOT of it went gray all at once.)But you know "Sometimes, ya gotta be a Bitc-" If I had Paris Hiltons money I'd like to think I'd do more w/ it than live an endless party.
"Cool Bikes and Autism Service Dogs for everyone!"
Would like to think I'd do something less friviolus, but theres no guarantees. It's a very COOL Bike.

I'm very happy for you as well, Hartz. A change of environment is really good for your nervous system and your perspective. I'm glad you had such an enjoyable time and I hope you will have many, many more of the same.

I almost backed out at the last minute, because I hadn't met any of them before. But since this was a Meet-Up for the Socially Anxious and Shy, we had that in common before we even met. And one of the guys was an Aspie. I wouldn't have had the guts to just meet with "Normal" people.

"Fascism may make the trains run on time, but you wouldn't like some of the destinations.
Terry Pratchett" Couldn't find that one in WikiQuote but it does sound like something he would say.
Interesting, indeed. I found a close match at http://cloudnet.com/~jldomini/othfun.html#terryp, but that still doesn't say where it's from. I can't say I recognise it, and I think I've read most his writings, except for the latest one (Wintersmith?).
Also, it doesn't really sound like TP, because it's an urban myth? The trains were running on time in Italy before Mussolini invented the fascists.
Actually the Fascists created the illusion of getting the trains to run on time as there was a great deal of social unrest and
civil disorder in Italy and much of Europe during the 1930s. And no, Mussolini did not invent fascism, he was merely trying
to imitate what the Romans perfected.... Fascism is simply "My club is bigger than your club". It's as old as mankind.
See Fasces.

I had a similar experience in that I almost backed out of a "social" outing that turned out to be a really nice time. A friend that I only see 3 or 4 times a year invited me to join her in a trip to one of the casinos in Atlantic City. She's an experienced gambler and makes frequent trips to the casinos and gets free rooms and meals. We had a great time, we shared a room, read, chatted, gambled (she gave me money to gamble with) ordered room service, watched TV, and both of us slept like logs and I only had one minor anxiety attack the whole time. Now I want to do it tall over again, wh'ich, she says, we will. And to think I wasn't going to go because she might murder me in my sleep or something. Why? So she could have my man or my fortune?
