They make colored duct tape now, too! If supermodels can use it to make insta-cleavage, I'm sure it would work for keeping a butt in place.

I am printing and keeping what you wrote about the psychologist. That is my whole point of reason for wanting to get my BASc. I've met psychologists who listen with a half an ear while they ask you a multitude of questions that seem pointless. I want to be the one that you were talking about. :) I want to go to bed at night knowing that I am helping make a positive difference in someone's life, the money really doesn't play into it.

My cousin is a shrink in Lexington KY and she told me once that all shrinks get into the field cause they're f%^@#& up themselves and are trying to "self-diagnose" so noone else finds out how F@#$^* up they are.
She says that if you go in knowing that it'll put you on a more equal footing. :D
Just one shrinks opinion mind you, I'm sure lots of them would't agree to having their own issues.

8O How did she know??! ! I'll have to hang a warning sign on the door to my office!

I have only seen one psychiatrist. I had a minor nervous breakdown and put myself in the hospital before I lost it completely. The shrink I saw was a very cold man with no sense of humor. He came in one day when I was sitting in the smoking lounge and coloring (yes, I like coloring with crayons). When I had to go talk to him, the first thing he asked me wasn't how was I feeling or what am I doing smoking, it was "why were you coloring and do you realize that is a past-time for children." I informed him I find it stress relieving, it was boring as all hell in that ward when there were no people running around having conversations with imaginary people, and recommended he try it. He was not amused and began one of his lectures that ALWAYS began with " All things being equal....".
He had his own nervous breakdown 3 years later. Maybe he should have colored more and said,"All things being equal" less.

my friend, the one i spoke of? two degrees in, plus clinical training in, psychology. seriously screwed up woman, sad to say. nice person, but issues on top of issues on top of issues that she is afraid to look at (i'm guessing). brilliant, intellectually. but some strange head games going on.

lauri - what can you do with a BS in psych in canada? (unless you've got a very specialized program you're going into, you're only going to end up with a half-dozen courses in the psych area with a bachelors - intro to this and intro to that, etc.) i assume you will be moving on into a masters' level training program of some sort? have you got an area of specialization you're thinking of? or is the system of education different up there at the university level?

here you could work in the public school system with the school kids as a counselor or something, but to do therapy of any sort you'd have to go on for a minimum of a masters' degree. have you looked that far down the road?

met a "gold" psychiatrist, once. only saw him about a half-dozen times before i had to move to another town. he took me outside to jump up and down in puddles of rainwater on my first visit.

we got along pretty well, all in all, after that.

Yep! I sure have! I would like to go as far as getting my masters and I would most likely specialize in Child Psychology or as a Behaviour Management therapist. I already have my Early Childhood Education diploma. I am very good with young children and I like them better than any other age group. When I first started working in daycares when I was 19, I cared for children that had emotional and behavioural issues due to being abused. I seem to be very good at getting through to them. I no longer want to care for them in a hands on way but I do still love children. I can't imagine not dealing with them on some level.
I don't mind adults, but I think I would end up becoming enmeshed in their problems. It would be hard for me to keep myself detached, I think.

I have 5 years to worry about it, a year before I can start and then 4 to 6 years to complete the Bachelor's degree. If I start thinking too far ahead, I may just scare myself out of it!!

I could also major in Neuroscience and get my masters here so it is an option I'm going to explore. Like I said, I have a few years to think about it!

naw, don't be scared of it, lauri. :D you'll love it once you get to grad school. it's so much better/more fun/more intellectually stimulating than the undergrad years. it's really worth trying - like switching from a lower gear to a higher one, you can really stretch out. good luck!

Hartz, It's great to have someone to go through the transition with!! :) My friend that lent me the laptop is also undergoing a major mid-life transformation involving a divorce but her answer has been to go "hunting" at the bar every weekend. I personally can't see wanting to deal with anymore men at the moment. I'd much rather do what we're doing! Way to go, my friend!!

Richie, this touched me as few things do. we are so fortunate to be not there, even if we were there at one time. I sincerely hope you weren't. Oh, I hope, I hope, I hope you weren't there. . .

I have been looking around for this video ever since the topics of shrinks and institutions came up: "Bedlams & Willowbrooks"

As for Bessedmom's remark that her psychiatrist should take up coloring, nothing wrong with feeding your inner child:
"Heres to the Crazy Ones" who did feed their inner children. :P

 I saved both of those videos! Richie, I am very glad that you didn't have to go to a place like that.

I had a great-uncle who I now know was an Aspie. He was institutionalized and the family rumor was that he had been given rat poison by his wife to make him the way he was. I was recently told it wasn't true. I rode with him on a trip , and he didn't look me in the eye once. He stimmed the entire time. I just kept talking to him because I could tell by his face that he was listening and was enjoying himself. I also knew that no one else ever talked to him about anything. They assumed he was stupid. All of the traits that my sons have, he had. He was one of the most gentle people that I've ever met.

I don't know how anyone, a parent, spouse, sibling or friend could institutionalize someone who really could have been so much more.

Richie, thanks for the links. "Here's to the Crazy Ones" is going into my favorites. It's beautiful. I don't know if I can bare to view the one about Willow Brook. I'm afraid it will disturb me. Have to wait for a time when I feel more up to it.

I have Sophist to thank for those two videos, I found them on the "Gestalt" forum that I sometimes visit.

think superglue would work?

During Bill the Cat's trial for treason (he dated Jeane Kilpatrick, then the US ambassador to the UN, in order to get state secrets to sell to "the Rooskies"), Steve Dallas was representing Bill, with Opus as his chief law clerk. The first morning of the trial, Steve showed up at Opus' apartment, shouting that they needed to get moving. Opus replied, "Just let me get my face on."

Next panel: Opus, with a flat front to his head where a face should go, walks across the panel.

Next panel: a loud "SWACK!" comes from the bathroom.

Last panel: Opus, face attached, pops in on the side, saying, "The magic of Velcro!" (Steve drops his face into his hand and replies, "Don't mess with my head.")

Oh, BTW, welcome to rathermousie and Swampblossom ! Sorry I haven't been in, but I still haven't managed to replace SAL 9000, so I've been sharing ArmyWife with H until I can arrange a new system. (Also going to have to buy a new system for J - looks like he wants something sturdier to see him through the year he'll still have remaining in Iraq after his R&R in Jan, and H wants to give DarkAngel to her friend who needs a computer worse than I do.) Since she and J chat on Yahoo! every morning (as he gets ready for bed) and evening (right after he gets up), I have to grab time on here when I can... :)
