I have a passion for Japan and have spent 2 vacations in Japan. I feel much more at ease there, even in crowded places like Tokyo. Very friendly and helpful people but never invasive into your "personal space". I really like the Japanese etiquettes: they are strict and numerous but easy and intuitive (to me at least). You always know how to behave and if you make a mistake you know that as a foreigner you are allowed (expected!) to make mistakes.
