BBRRRRR! My furnace decided to quit working last night. It got down to 0 Celsius with a wind chill of -4. I haven't heard from the landlord yet and I talked to him last night. It's bloody cold in here!!

Good thing for cashmere, yak, llama, alpaca, silk, angora(rabbit), mohair (which comes from the Angora goat), merino(sheep), corriedale (sheep) or we'd be even colder. And I'd have to find a different perseveration! I met a lady a month or so ago who spins merino wool and can add hair from certain breeds of dog into it. Collies and shelties work the best and I think I'm going to send her some of Pongo's hair and see how it spins. Lord know he sheds enough.

We still have 80+ degree days here in the Susquehanna Valley PA. But that won't last much longer.....
In two more weeks I'll be breaking out the fleece and the Cashmere.

We're usually still warm here, too. The temperature dips down past zero by Halloween but this year the cold has come early. It's going to be a long winter.

Lauri, if this is an offer it is one I can't refuse. I would be thrilled to wear a sweater made by you. Tell me how to go about getting the yarn to you or the money to buy the yarn.

I would love to make you one. I should tell you, though, that 100% cashmere runs at around $50 per ball and it takes approx. 10 balls for an average ladies sweater. It would probably be less expensive to buy one in a store. (That's what I would do)

If you want a cashmere, wool blend, it is 11.00 a ball. It is very, very soft, with the same feel of cashmere, but is sturdier and easier wearing. It would be easiest for me to get the yarn so I can send you the link to the store I work in and you can see the shade card. If you want pure cashmere, I would suggest you check out the yarn stores in your area and then you can send me the yarn. I'm not sure how the payment would go. If you want me to get it from my store, they can charge it to your credit card. We do it that way for people in Montana and Idaho.
(I could order the expensive cashmere in, as well. I just have to find out if we have a supplier.)

There is no way I would pay 500 dollars for a sweater. That would be obscene. Let me think on this. Wool is too itchy for me. But thanks for the reality check. 8O

I have never paid more that $100.00 for a sweater and that is the one I wear all the time (I'm wearing it now). It's a long, mid-calf sweater coat. I've been tempted to buy the fancy yarn, but I just can't bring myself to waste that kind of money.

(The yarn I was talking about it is really very soft and not itchy at all. I know because I can't wear most wool, either.)

I"ve never paid more than 50.00 for a sweater, and even that I thought was a bit extravagant. Now don't get me wrong. We all have our priorities. I tend to buy a lot of inexpensive things instead of one or two good things. But I'm trying to cut back and buy less and really get to know my clothes the way I used to when I didn't have 2 pennies to rub together. I'm a "dyed-in-the-wool" thrift store girl. Last year I got my winter coat for 10.00. It was a Perry Ellis, black, full length cashmire blend.

I think I just got an insight as to why the librarians rolled their eyes. I forgot about my eyebrow ring and I wasn't wearing jeans, I was wearing my camo army pants.

I bought the jeans and short-sleeved sweater I'm wearing right now at the thrift store on the weekend. The sweater was 3.00 and and jeans were 5.99. I don't spend alot on clothes, either. Heck, I have too many kids, even if I did want to be extravagant!

I got the yarn for the long sweater with a gift card from my mother 4 years ago, so technically I guess she paid for it.

The most I ever spent on clothes in the past five years was thirty dollars for a pair of Canondale cycling shorts (They're worth it)
and $12.00 on four pairs of jeans at a thrift store.

And you have an Iphone and other gadgets to show for it!

How do you like the Iphone now that you've had it for a few days? I've heard good things and bad things.

So far it is working out pretty good for me, when you buy an iPhone you have to activate at home via iTunes.
I had iTunes on my PC but never used it.....
When I tried to activate my account I had to get the newest version of iTunes and then open an account with Apple,
then I was able to activate, The iPhone replaces one of my old cell phones as I already have an account with at&t,
if I need a more advanced phone I'll get either an Open Moko or an HP iPaq
and simply take the SIM out of my Samsung phone and use it one of those. The Open Moko and the iPaq are "unlocked" phones
so if I"m traveling abroad I can buy a SIM card locally that is tied to a pre-paid cellular service. Having two cell phones tied to
one account is cheaper than maintaining both a cell account and a land line. And I'm not bothered by tele-marketers.

And the jeans are already broken in, that's the best part of thrift store jeans.

And trash picking is even better. It's free. Down the shore last week everyone was cleaning up there rental units and summer homes and throwing really decent stuff away. We brought home a bike and a small trampoline for the grand kids. And we would have brought home a lot more but we couldn't fit it in the back of the pick up. If I ever learned to drive, I would definitely want a pick up of my own. And not a nice, new pretty one. What is it with people who have to turn their vehicle in every 5 years for a new one. I do understand that cars, trucks and motorcycles have gone so electronic that self repair and maintenance are almost impossible these days. That's the industry's game. My husband always used to work on his cars and bikes. Now he has to take them to the shop. Plus there is that inspection BS. And insurance!! ! Stop the world, I want to get off. I wish I could go live in the sticks somewhere.

Inventor is working on creating the "sticks for us".I havent given up hope yet.I did just mention in my last email to hi that I hope the location is close to a city....I live off the refuge of others, like all good crows.I heard necesity wa the mother of invention...very ture,I would through "poverty" in there as well. Now I cant buy "new" clothes, even when I have the money,,,thriftstores have spoiled me,and we have a great one here.

Another thiing I love about thriftstores is that I havent been "spoiled" by rading fashion magazines....I bought my first pair of cotton "parachute pants" a few years ago and thought they were very "fresh and cool",didnt realize until I was watching a movie from the 80-s that they had been around for awhile and not recently invented.....(the'll come back,so comfy and lots of shiney zippers).

I could not imagaine living without thriftstores(screw walmart,to pricey for me,to much lead). You could also build a house picking up the stuff people put on their curbs twice a year(spring, fall pick-ups from the city).I always wanted a pick-up too.
Garage sales on the other hand have gone down hill around here.I think it's the first sign of a recession.
