Is this not the normal reaction?

I'm bemused. Last night, on the newsgroup alt.support.autism, someone was asking about Vyvanse, and seemed not to have found anything on it, except the manufacturer's website. Was that you?

Although I have little idea of these things, I answered the post, thinking "If Chuck were here, he'd know all about this.".

Anyway, the upshot was that at least the Wikipedia article didn't seem particularly biased, although it is tiny.

The thing that got me was that the poster was talking about it being used to "treat Autism", which is strange, because a) that doesn't make sense, and b) even the manufacturer's website makes no such claim, at all.

In fact, the drug is not approved for anything but the treatment of ADHD for children 6-12.

So, your doctor is just using you as a guinea pig? How much are Shire Pharmaceuticals paying him? You could ask for a cut.

Also, as I gather Vyvanse is essential a slow release amphetamine, how on earth does that stimulant help with the H in ADHD?

Basically, your symptoms seem to match exactly what you'd expect, no?

I suppose, if you're into uppers, it's cheaper than buying it on the street? Or maybe not.

Huh. I just got my annual (which hasn't happened in several years) personnel eval at work. Prepare the way, I now officially walk on water. [With a raise, even. Gonna sock that straight into the 401K, I think. Ok, maybe one initial frivol. My turntable died and the speakers literally disintegrated last year. I've never seen a speaker crumble like that - it hit some base notes and flaked apart! All my LPs have been in storage (I've got like 400-500 of them). I miss the music. I wonder if they still make turntables? I know that the speakers that used to be like three ft high are now tiny table-top things with the same sound quality (or better). Maybe I'll get some of them, too.]

They'll even pay to send me to classes I want to take. 8O I just am supposed to be "more forceful" in my interactions with persons outside my immediate organization when trying to get things done. I've been too reticent, too tactful. Muahahaha, they've done turned me loose on an unsuspecting world. And are paying me to do it! Ok, they asked. Remind me to remind them of that later.

I guess this means I don't need to tell them I'm Aspie and ask for the work accommodations I was considering asking them for. Amazing the difference in this place since we got a new boss.

Ooooooooooo! 8O 8O 8O :D

Congratulations Nan :D a raise is always nice, but the turntable will be even better!
Oh Chuck, I only WISH I had some of what you've got, then I might actually pick up all these stuffed animals that now inhabit my living room instead of my current "Kick a path through them" If I MOVE them into the bedroom my daughter has a HUGE meltdown and I just don't see the point in that. Good Luck on the sleep.
I'm glad your feeling better Blessedmom and don't tell anyone but I'm wearing the same clothes I had on yesterday, and I'm still o.k. (they did't smell too bad when I pulled them out of "the in-between" pile)
Haven't been riding, winter is here. Gonna go get a "remote start" put on the car as soon as our PFD's get here. "9 more days, 9 more days," (dancing thru the stuffed animals) :D It's time to put on my "Winter coat of flab" which is a joke because trust me, I'v allready got a good 2-3 layers of fat on the way it is. :D
But I don't care about it,except for the health issues and the last time I was at the ER, (no insurance so thats my only medical access....Oh to live in Canada, heavy sigh)
anyway, they told me I was healthier than a skinny person who did't exercise, so I'm cool. I don't like being skinny cause then men come out of the woodwork to hit on you (so superficial) cause I'm the same person inside no matter what I weigh. This way, w/ my "winter coat" they actually listen to me, or leave me alone.
I'm glad you like my new sig Nannorob...it would't have been near as good w/out Lau and PP's input through. I still like your "NT" one but what do I know. Just call me "The Big Spoon" (stirring up the sh$%%^^$! :D

Ok, I guess a washing machine is really more practical.

Sigh.

Really, Reika - you'd think someone who had something that would cause electrical energy to come out of their heads; and make it so their butts to not be dragging would share with their friends, woudn'tja?

Meltdown v stuffed animals. My vote is to leave the stuffed animals where they are, unless you can totally ingnore a meltdown. In 20 years, nobody's going to remember anyway. Good luck.

I come on here, read all the interesting posts, formulate responses, and then forget them! :) Anyway, hi to everyone. Sometimes I wish we could add memory and mental acuity to little slots inside our heads, the way we can upgrade computers. Wouldn't that be great?

Oh, yes please. I'm still on my old 8088 cpu. Would really like a pentium now, please.

I just called home to remind my kid to do something before she goes to class and forgot her name again when she answered the phone. :?

Sometimes stimulants such as ritalin have a paradoxical effect of sedating
an already hyped-up person, this Vyvanse seems to be a more powerful stimulant hence a more powerful paradoxical effect.
If life was only that simple. :?

Yeah, I thought that was the gold standard in proving ADD - if the stimulant calms you, you have ADD. Is that not true?

Yep, that is very true, but just like any other meds, they aren't all right for each person. I can take Ritalin, it calms me down, causes me to focus and stop yapping constantly so I can actually get things done, but when I take Dexedrine, which is a different class of stimulant, I have a Chuckie episode!! It didn't work at all.

Another interesting thing about stimulants that my pharmacist told me is that children often need more than adults. Adults tend to react to smaller amounts. I was prescribed a dose twice as strong as what I actually need. It was the children's dose so I had to fiddle with it until I figured it out.

Lau, I thought the same thing before I was diagnosed. I also couldn't figure out how someone who falls asleep in her chair when she is knitting in the afternoon could possibly have ADHD. Well, it turns out that Inattentive ADHD is caused by an underactive frontal lobe in the brain. To compensate the body causes movement to keep the frontal lobe awake. And of course there are the same sensory issues faced by people with AS.

The stimulants work by boosting the dopamine? and other necessary neurotransmitters that keep the brain awake and focused. For the full explanation, you'll have to wait and see if Chuck wakes up any time soon after coming down from his high last night!

I have had times when I've jotted little responses on paper while reading the posts and then I can go and respond to them with the computer. I always wish I had said this or that when I go back and read them again.

You might consider this...

I often read through, and when I see a message I mean to respond to. I just "middle click" on the "Quote" or "Reply". That puts it into a new tab. I'll then sketch what I want to say, and leave it until later.

When I've finished catching up on the thread, and no one has said what I was going to say already, for instance, I'll finish it off and post it.

Let's see if I remember when the time comes. :)

... mind you, sometimes it gets a bit lost, in amongst the other 30-odd tabs I have showing.

  Need to tabulate your tabs, Lau?

Okay, that didn't sound quite right! :? I'll have to work on it.
