It's The Mars Volta's symbol, called Los Tres Ojos (The Three Eyes). There's a line that I really like about it in the De-Loused in the Comatorium story book... "To obtain enlightenment. Ignoring temptations from the left and the right... The middle eye focused illuminously." I got that when I was 17, and I'm still happy with it.

I look pretty much the same now, still riding the same bicycle (past 30 years) and playing the same guitar (past 20 years) as shown in this photograph from 2002. This was taken on the campus of Sonoma State University in northern California where I was attending classes at the time, hence the backpack full of schoolbooks on the rear rack. When not being used for cargo, the rear rack usually has a battery-powered Pignose amplifier attached with bungee cords so other people can hear what I am playing.

Thanks. Since the early 1980s I've gone about twenty-five thousand miles doing this. I do it mainly to ease my own pain, but I am glad other people enjoy what I do.

No, I'm not even sure I could do it on any other bicycle. I've only ever done this on the same 1977 Schwinn Sportabout all these years. I don't understand why more people don't do this. It's so much more comfortable to be sitting straight up instead of hunched over the handlebars like Quasimodo, and I can more easily turn my head to look around to watch traffic or enjoy the scenery.

I have learned to not try riding my bicycle unless I am playing guitar at the same time. The last time I tried riding without a guitar I got badly hurt. By the way, if you or anyone else has any contacts in the music business, news media, or any companies that might want to sponsor me or use me for promotions, please hook me up.

the reason people like me cannot duplicate your amazing action, is that we lack the high-level physical coordination required for this high level of physical functioning. you are an exceptional specimen in this regard. very interesting that you cannot ride sans guitar. it makes my brain go TILT :!: :?: just thinking about it.
as for having to ride upright, my low back won't let me lean forward in typical speed-racer bikepilot style, so i also have to use an upright crank-forward bike to ride.

I am clumsy off the bicycle. I walk funny and have poor eye-hand coordination. There's something magical that happens when I get on the bicycle with a guitar though. I don't think it requires high coordination. I think faith does it. I don't think about what I'm doing; I just do it. If I tried to consciously keep track of everything going on I'd fall for sure. One of the newspaper articles about me said leprechauns run alongside me holding me up. It must be true because I read it in the newspaper!

@ TheBicyclingGuitarist

DUDE! 8O That really is an amazing talent. It completely baffles me that you are able to do that. I am also of the physically uncoordinated persuasion and have never pulled off any such epic maneuvers, so I am naturally quite envious. What kind of music do you play? I hope it's death metal  .

Seriously, though. I would really like to hear your music. Can you post a link please?

Sorry not death metal; it IS Rock and Roll though! You might like Spank the Naughty Blonde (link) . The lyrics page has an optional free mp3 download of R Band playing that song at "the Pit" (the Airmen's club) of Travis Air Force Base, California in December 1995. Since the mid-1990s R Band is now defunct (play that defuncty music), but it may reform someday with new members (I created the name and logo of R Band).

I've had a web site since 1997. In 2000 or so it moved to my own domain at The Bicycling Guitarist (link).
My YouTube channel is BicyclingGuitarist (link).

I actually play guitar better now, and sing MUCH better, than anything yet recorded or posted. I need to be recorded by someone who knows what they're doing. I have hundreds of original songs most of which have never been recorded at all. A few dozen of the older ones were recorded poorly and are on my web site as optional free mp3 downloads. I tried recording myself in 2004 and again in 2008. A couple of the better attempts are on the YouTube channel.
