A viola looks more like that and is often played like a cello, between the legs.
A viola is not a viola de gamba, sylbao. They are different instruments. A viola is a big violin, played under the chin, like the violin. A viola de gamba is as you describe. I agree that jmnixon95 is seeing a violin in the photo -- it's too small to be a viola.

I'm no where near as serious as this picture would suggest, but no matter how much I try, I can't seem to smile. I shot this of myself a few minutes ago on 12/31/10 at about 8:47 am (L.A. time)
It's a cool picture. It reminds me of a photo you'd see of an author on a book jacket. If you've just written a murder-mystery you're all set.
