Autism and me:

I neglect to mention many things (for obvious reasons); lack of inflection in my voice, more of my verbal difficulties (echolalia--I even exhibit this in the movie at the end; I don't even know I do these things), my hypersensitivity to the environment, to the people who inhabit it. My high pain threshold for external sensations, my problems with exerting pressure on objects and how much I actually am applying. My motor mannerisms ("stims"); you can see me sway in the video, I sway to some extent when standing all of the time.

I think that's pretty much all of it in relation to me, O, and social isolation, but that's by choice rather than what autism imposes on me; I don't like interacting with people (it's beside the point that I cannot do such).

i really like to watch all the videos! here is one of me from a couple months ago. i always take things down because i hate how i look so much, so we'll see if this one lasts. i have rationalized to myself that i don't actually look this way, since i now am slightly skinnier and i have a mohawk... but i'm sure i still do weird things with my face... i had no idea how many weird faces i make until i watched this.

Kitsy, if you wander back to WP, you need to put your guitar video back up. It was really good, and your face wasn't even in it, so we couldn't recognize you anyway... so... put it back.

i like your current avatar. the monsters in your head are going to make you dead... the cross splitting through the word "head" to make the word "deaTh" is interesting.

Danielsmyname, I'm kindof new to this site and I haven't met many people with autism or asperger's or NLD, but I just wanted to say that your video seemed fine to me. It made me realize that the word "autism" is almost like a term invented by the normal people to make sense of people who are different.. they need a label... there's nothing wrong with being autistic -- that is just how certain "normals" view it.. I guess I'm slowly figuring that out.. I didn't really notice any differences in you maybe because I'm different, I'm not one to notice the differences so much? I have the same issues with body language, gestures, etc.. Your voice didn't sound all that monotone. The only thing that I noticed was that you didn't look into the camera that much, but then alot of people might not.. ("normal" or otherwise) I liked how you repeated that bit about the special interests, it didn't seem out of place or like "echolalia sp?" to me.. you smiled the second time adding more feeling to it, which didn't seem at all odd to me..

If I didn't know this was an autism, asperger's (autistic spectrum) forum, and saw your video, I wouldn't know it.. I guess I could say the same thing for a number of the videos I've seen here so far.. Maybe I'm not able to notice anything out of the ordinary because of my NLD (mild asperger's?) Thanks for your video : )

fresco, thanks for the nice comment; I have trouble seeing my soul.

MusicMaker1, thanks for your reply; I showed the video to my mother, and she said I interact with her totally different compared to how I appear in the video (she told me she wanted to hug me when she saw me for I appeared sad to her). Perhaps you're seeing the difference for you recognize it within yourself (as you said), perhaps I'm really high-functioning and it's not as evident, or perhaps it could be a bit of both.

I smiled at the end as I repeated myself for I saw all of my obsessions throughout the years in my head, how I devoted all of my waking thought to them, and how my head is full of facts due to the multitudes of obsessions I've had over the years.

Apart from the eye contact, I cannot really pin it either; I look "normal" to me. But then, looking away as I speak is "normal" to me too (I did go out of my way to look at the camera; it makes me uncomfortable looking at it, but I don't see why a lack of eye contact would bother anyone).

Danielismyname,

I agree with MusicMaker1 in that your voice doesn't sound too monotone, and, in general, you don't seem "strange" at all to me. If I saw you in real time, I would probably never suspect you were autistic; I would think you are just very introverted and shy, and that's it.

I have never made any videos of myself on purpose (not that I remember), but I have some which have my voice in them. I made this little one spontaneously when I came to visit a friend, and it turned out that she had a new cat.

Image

The slower, more level voice in the foreground is mine.

Me: "Kitty....kitty..."
Friend: "She's rolling around like -"
Me: "The better the motivation for moving out sooner, then."
Friend: *odd little laugh*
Me: "If not for the sake of myself, then at least for the sake of the cat."

(we were talking about how I might adopt her cat when I start renting a room or apartment of my own)

Apart from the "symptoms" I pointed out, I doubt there's anything else someone with autism will show to the camera; I showed pretty much all of the symptoms to some extent, barring a lack of speech, but I have an adequate voice.

The only difference I'd display out there to a professional would be a total lack of eye contact till I've seen the person for awhile, and then I'd make sporadic contact between sentences/replies when there's a lull. And it'd take me longer to formulate my words (I kinda had an idea of what to say beforehand for this video).

I cannot interact at all in an unplanned setting with someone I don't know ("socializing").

The lack of inflection (which equates to monotone) will transpose over all emotional situations; when talking to people other than my mother, my voice will stay "even" throughout the whole conversation no matter the emotional reciprocity required.

I'll take another video; I'll talk of autism some more.
