Has anyone here read," The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Night-time"? They had it in Canadian TIre of all places so I bought it.

Thanks guys. Actually, I don't know how an astrolabe works. I love astronomy, but live in the heart of a huge city, so only the brightest stars get through.

One sec...(Duncan lands on back of truck to use martial arts skill against creepy pale dude with dreadlocks.) I don't...know...very much...about...astronomy...Chuck (Duncan ducks kick)...but it has always fascinated me...hold up...(blocks punch, sends creepy white guy flying)...Didn't anyone ever tell you dreads look ret*d on white boys?...(creepy white boy gives finger and flies back into action)...so, Sleepy...(blocks kick, misses punch, flies backward, rolls forward, kicks legs out from under the creepy dude, lands on him, hammers head)...don't (wham) interrupt (wham) when I'm (wham) talking (wham) to Sleepy!(WHAM)...there! He's gone! So true, Sleepy, about the freeway scene! It's...uh-oh...got to go...next overpass is mine...meet you guys at the pinball parlor when I'm done! Wait, do they still have those?

(Duncan jumps from truck just in time, flips onto overpass, and runs away, singing softly...

...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...time is an asterisk...

For no other reason than no reason, I thought I'd make my 3456th post in here.

(Richie would know that it's 2^7*3^3)

It's a novel by Mark Haddon. I've heard it mentioned before but didn't pay much attention. It's about told from the viewpoint of a guy with autism, but I think it's fictional.

It is fictional. It does have some interesting sides to it.

Mark Haddon, I believe, did some work with autistics, for a while. At least, I think that's how the story goes.

The book is about a young boy with an ASD. There were (simultaneously) two jackets to the book - one for it published as a "serious" novel, and one as a children's book. I'm not sure which one, but one of the covers says that the boy has Asperger's Syndrome. The other cover doesn't. The text never says it. This sparks off huge rows, where one person insists the boy portrayed is an aspie, 'cos the book said so, and their opponent insist that he's not, and the book never said it.

Anyway, I found the book very soon after I first found out about AS. I thought it brilliant. I thought the only aspect that was unrealistic was that Christopher (the boy) had every part of the syndrome, in spades. (I guess my cover said AS.)

The people who object to the book always seem to say things like "Christopher does <such-and-such>, but I don't". I always wonder if they have not fully grasped the concept of a "syndrome".

Thanks, Lau.

The copy I bought today doesn't state anywhere that he has AS but from the description of the character that written on the jacket, it would seem he does. As of this printing it is a #1 International Bestseller and has been awarded a "Whitbread Award". Both of those tell me it is a solid piece of writing if nothing else. And just from the reviews printed inside it seems to be worth reading.

Terry Pratchett will have to be on hold.

Interesting Sleepy. That video was a pure example of things I cannot hear.

By that, I mean that I was unable to understand a single word, when also watching the video, possibly because it was lip-synced? Anyway, I then listened with my eyes closed, and still couldn't figure out more than the odd word here and there.

If someone is speaking normally, I can usually understand every word.

If someone is singing (whether there are other instruments or not), I listen only to the music (voice) and do not understand the words (content) at all.

When I was singing in choirs, I ran up against the same problem, in reverse. I could read the words on the sheet music and understand the "story". When singing, though, I had no concept of the narrative thread of the noises (words) I was making. This made it somewhat hard when the piece was organised as verses, because I would not really have much idea which verse came next.

To add to that, I don't know if I have "perfect pitch", but it's close. One note a tiny bit out, and I hear it.

Another example of single-mindedness?

Now that you mention it, Lau, I probably didn't catch more than 50% of the lyrics myself. I was always more interested in the samples, noises, and other bits o' business in the song, some of which are "quotes" from previously-released Yello singles. "I Love You" was a huge danceclub hit back in the day, and who could forget "Oh Yeah" on the Ferris Bueller's Day Off soundtrack. *chicka-chickaaaahhh....*

These are the actual lyrics to "Pinball Cha Cha":

Yello wrote:
Welcome in Lucy's Bar. Hey you gentlemen over there, come on closer, see me play the sensational game. It's the only thing I've got in my life and I play it every day, and, well, believe it or not, it's just... pinball. And for me it's... claro... que sí.

Come, come close to me, I tell you, man, you will see I'm like happy tree. Come close and then you will see. Every ball for me's another game. For you this always, always looks the same.

Hey you, man, you watch me! Might be right I am a fool, but man, why don't you tell me if you know a better tool?

All the gates are lit, this is very good for me. It's like a kiss, watch out, man, and you will see.
Now all lights are on. Believe me, man, that I have won. I know for you this doesn't look a lot, for me this is the only thing I got.

I really couldn't care less if you take me for a fool. I know you couldn't show me any better tool.

Oy oy oy, I like my toy. "Claro que sí" is "yes, for sure." Oy oy oy, I like my toy, a knack inside. I win another game, I press the button and it's not the same.

At a guess, Dieter Meier's and Boris Blank's first language is German. And you're right, the vision and sound aren't synchronised in the video, which doesn't help matters!

For me, it also doesn't help that there are at least three voices singing together, which always causes me problems, and the two deep voices aren't in sync with the higher-pitched one - quite. It's close enough, I think, that the mythical average person would be able to hear the song as such, but it's just enough off that I can't make it out.

And yes, I have that problem with choral singing, too...

...or spectrum. Happy belated 3465 post, Lau! Do we get cake and ice cream? (mind you, any reason will suffice for cake and ice cream!  ). Just wasn't sure if this was a "tacos and tap-dance shoes" occasion instead? (I'm never certain of these things).
